III. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminary Activities

B. Motivation
1. Ask the students if they read comic
books.
2. Ask them about their favourite comic
books and characters.
3. Let them tell the class what it is that they
find interesting in comic books
C. Presentation
1. Activity
Show a video of a short story. Let
each group summarize using their
own way of summarizing.
2. Analysis
1. Ask the students what could be
the best way to summarize a text?
2. Find out from the students if they
read local comic books. Do they
know some of the local comic
book characters?
3.
compare with the local comic
books? Which is more appealing to
the students?
3. Abstraction
SUMMARY – a shortened passage,
which retains the essentials information of
the original. It is a fairly brief restatement -
in your own words – of the contents to
passage.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD SUMMARY
 can be understood without
reference to the original

TECHNIQUES IN SUMMARY WRITING
1. Paraphrasing
To paraphrase means to
completely and correctly express other
people’s ideas in one’s own words.
IMPORTANCE OF PARAPHRASING:
 it helps us understand the original
better
 it helps us grasp the central idea
and the main points
 it helps us write summaries that are
brief and to the point, and in our
own words

STEPS IN WRITING A SUMMARY
1. Read the article
2. Re-read the article
3. Write one-sentence summary.
4. Formulate the thesis statement
5. Write the first draft
4. Application
Each group will be given a copy of
a sample essay and will be advised to do
the following:
1. Write the thesis statement for the work.
2. Write down the sentences which shows
paraphrasing.
3. Who is being quoted in the first quoted
page from the story? Write the quote on
your paper.

IV. EVALUATION
On the same sample essay given,
summarize in order, the six points the
author uses to make his case against
compulsory school attendance laws

V. ASSIGNMENT
Ask the students to work in groups
of five to create their own original comic
books.
