Joy Kogawa returns to the Langham
We are thrilled for the return of Joy Kogawa to the Lang-
ham theatre to speak on the theme of Writing Towards
Forgiveness as part of the 2019 Writers’ Convergence.
Author of the 1981 Canadian classic novel Obasan,
based on her World War II internment experience in the
Slocan, Kogawa will focus on her 2016 memoir Gently
to Nagasaki which touchingly and bravely explores the
complexities of forgiveness.
Kogawa is a member of the Order of Canada and
Order of British Columbia as well as Japan’s Order of the
Rising Sun for her contribution to preserving Japanese-
Canadian history.
Joy worked closely with the Langham in the 1980s
and 1990s helping to develop the Japanese Canadian
Museum. Kaslo was the first municipality in Can-
ada to formally apologize for the Japanese Canadian
Internment.

 Why words matter when we talk
about addiction
Words and language matter – especially for people who
use substances. The terms we use to describe people who
use drugs and the conditions associated with drug use can
play either a supportive role in overdose prevention, or
lead to guilt and isolation among people who use drugs.
Studies show that negative language discredits and dis-
criminates, making people feel isolated and more likely to
use drugs alone. When a person uses alone they are less
likely to access lifesaving programs and services.
Using non-stigmatizing language can make a posi-
tive difference in difficult conversations. Let’s change the
conversation about addiction. Point focus on the medical
aspects of the disease. Encourage people who use drugs to
seek the help and support they need and deserve. Treating
people who use substances with respect improves health
outcomes and helps save lives.
In a report available on www.TowardTheHeart.com,
researchers outline the stigmatizing language often used
to describe substance use, dependence and/or addiction.
It highlights the impact this language can have on people
who use drugs. The report also offers tips and best prac-
tices for changing the overdose conversation:
Focus On People-First Language. This means referring
to a person before describing their behaviour or condi-
tion. This is important because it acknowledges that a
person’s condition, illness or behaviour is not that person’s
defining characteristic. “Person with a cocaine-use disor-
der” instead of “cocaine user” or “addict.”
Use Language That Reflects The Medical Nature Of Sub-
stance Use Disorders. There are many factors contribut-
ing to drug addiction, ranging from personal to social,
environmental and political. Avoid terms that reinforce a
belief that addiction is a failure of morals or personality,
rather than a medical issue. “Addictive disease” and “sub-
stance use disorder” instead of “abuser” or “junkie.”
Use Language That Promotes Recovery. Healthcare pro-
fessionals should use language that conveys optimism,
supports recovery and respects the person’s right to make
their own decisions. “Opted not to” and “not in agree-
ment with the treatment plan” instead of “unmotivated”
or “non-compliant.”
Avoid Slang And Idioms. Slang terms and idioms have
negative connotations and a significant level of stigma
attached to them. “Positive” or “negative” when referring
to drug tests, instead of “dirty” or “clean.”
What Is Stigma? Stigma is defined as “an attribute or
quality which ‘significantly discredits’ an individual in the
eyes of others”. Substance use disorders are more highly
stigmatized than other health conditions. Reframing the
language around drug use shifts the focus of drug addic-
tion from being a moral, social or criminal issue to a med-
ical issue, which deserves treatment.
Stigma toward people who use drugs can result in dis-
crimination, such as difficulty in obtaining employment,
reduced access to housing, or poor support for treatment.
People with substance use issues may also practice self-
stigma – feelings of shame and guilt that make them less
likely to seek employment and more likely to have diffi-
culties developing intimate relationships, avoid treatment
and use drugs alone. – Interior Health

Living Lakes Canada in Spain
Members of the Living Lakes Canada team just fin-
ished attending a Living Lakes International Conference
in Valencia, Spain. This was a powerful experience that
provided a valuable opportunity to listen, learn and share
experiences around water stewardship, especially around
wetlands and climate change impacts. This conference was
the 20th anniversary celebration of Living Lakes and was
attended by over 200 delegates from 41 countries.
Living Lakes Canada was represented at the confer-
ence by Nelson, BC residents Claire Pollock-Hall, Avery
Deboer-Smith and Jayme Jones and Squamish resident
Raegan Mallinson (formerly of Nelson). “These four young
women represented the Columbia Basin and spoke to an
international delegation about their water stewardship
work, sharing what they’re doing at a grassroots regional
and national level,” said Living Lakes Canada executive
director Kat Hartwig, who also attended the conference.
“Climate change adaptation measures for wetlands and all
the species that depend on them are a global problem and
presented a common bond for all the participants.”
The Living Lakes Canada team learned about climate
change impacts and water systems around the world, from
peat extraction in England releasing carbon emissions to
the mining impacts on lakes and wetlands in Mongolia,
to how climate change and population pressures have
impacted water quality and invasive species resulting
in the population decline of the manatee population in
Malawi, Africa.
There were many positive and innovative solutions
and collaborations presented. One example was how an
organization in India trained citizen scientists to moni-
tor and assist mangrove reforestation, as well as developed
economic incentives to help support the local economies.
An organization from Colombia shared success stories
about cost-effective green filters developed to improve
water quality in locations around the world. The young
delegates left the conference feeling more connected and
empowered due to support from the global Living Lakes
network, which connects concerned and engaged water
stewards from around the world who are addressing water
and climate issues.
“The Living Lakes Canada team will continue to work
with and learn from water champions from other coun-
tries as well as share our citizen science success stories that
have taken place right here in the Columbia Basin,” said

BC Bat Count seeks bat roosts
and volunteers
It can be difficult to know how to help endangered wild-
life such as the little brown bat. One simple way to sup-
port bats is to participate in the BC Annual Bat Count.
The BC Community Bat Program is requesting colony
reports and volunteer assistance for this citizen-science
initiative that encourages residents to count bats at local
roost sites.
In 2018, the Annual Bat Count collected baseline data
on bat populations at 214 sites across the province and
hope to find more sites for 2019. The count data helps bat
biologists understand bat distribution and normal varia-
tion in colony sizes before the devastating white-nose
syndrome affects bats in the province.
White-nose syndrome is an introduced fungal disease,
fatal for bats but not for other animals or humans. Not yet
identified in BC, the disease continues to spread in Wash-
ington State, less than 200 km from our border. Results
from the Bat Count may help prioritize areas in BC for
research into treatment options and recovery actions.
Bat counts are easy and fun. “The counts are a wonderful
way for people to get involved in collecting important sci-
entific information, as well as learn about bat behaviour,”
says biologist Leigh Anne Isaac, coordinator of the Koo-
tenay Community Bat Program. Volunteers wait outside
a known roost site, such as a bat-house, barn, bridge or
attic and count bats as they fly out at twilight. They record
the final number along with basic information on weather
conditions. Ideally, 1 – 2 counts are done between June 1
and 21 before pups are born and 1 – 2 more between July
11 and August 5 when pups are flying.
“We know relatively little about bats in BC, including
basic information on population numbers,” continues
Isaac. “This information is more valuable than ever, par-
ticularly if it is collected annually. If people want to get
involved but don’t have a roost site on their property, we
will try to match them with a roost site nearby.”
Funded by CBT, RDEK, RDCK, Habitat Conservation
Trust Foundation, the Forest Enhancement Society of BC,
the Habitat Stewardship Program and with support of the
BC Conservation Foundation and the Province of BC,
the BC Community Bat Program provides information
for people dealing with bat issues on their property or
who have questions about how to attract bats. To find out
