Structural Adjustment Programs, also known as SAPs, are a curse for poor people in 3rd world
countries that take out loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. In the
1970s, oil prices rose -generating a lot of surplus money in oil producing countries, much of which they
deposited in Western banks. These western banks lent money to 3rd world countries to make interest
without thinking of the consequences. As a result, Many poor 3rd world countries could not pay back
their debts. The international Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank created a group of programs to
help the poor countries pay off their debts. These programs were called SAPs.
Due to a shifting economy and rising cost of living, many people living in Central American
countries change to a new country because the cost of living is more convenient for them here and will
still have money to send back to the rest of their families According to the article published by New
American Economy titled Undocumented Immigrants it says “Undocumented workers frequently create
American jobs. Their companies also generated $17.2 billion in business income in 2014.” This is
beneficial not only to the immigrant families and kids who have come to America and strive for a better
future because the immigrants who migrate to the United States do not only help themselves, but the
family members who stayed in their home countries. The American government gains more money off of
the immigrants working and paying taxes, which means it is beneficial for Central Americans to come to
this country and contribute to the agriculture industry and other needed sectors of our economy.. Families
benefit from thande greater pay and there is free education is provided to all kids in the U.S
Friday November 30th, 2018 - I’m in Ms. O'Brien's class, it is 3:30pm and there is a big empty
class with tons of chairs and desk all around the center of the room with her desk staring right at the
students. Ms. O'Brien says the most beneficial part of teaching the students would have to be ¨knowing
that I am making a difference in their lives by teaching them a language and subjects most don't know.
What is the hardest part about teaching kids who aren’t born in this country? “The hardest thing about
being a teacher to the non English speaking students is the language part. I am not bilingual and only
speak English. This makes it difficult for me to communicate with my students, but through hand gestures
we all understand each-other slightly. Those who are learning English take pride in what they do. A lot of
the kids that come here have suffered with their journeys some have been in detention centers and others,
their parents are in detention centers. Some students will tend to do better in school than their
classmates.” I don't know exactly why, but those who are motivated will do better than their classmates.”
Ms. O’Brien says and she continues to say “Immigrants tend to work harder and take advantage of
everything because they did not have the advantage in their country.” Immigrant students get their wishes
granted by going to school for free and do not have to pay for food during lunch time after the 4th grade,
so most of the english learning students do take advantage of the support they have here in the U.S .
The Structural Adjustment Program which is a structural program that makes people
leave their country because they do not give people social services or human rights to maintain a long
lifespan or healthy food choices and medications is not provided and if it is, the medicine is overpriced
which people can afford or the ill would have to travel to far places to get the medications and not have a
vehicle to transport them from one location to another. Not having social services, jobs, or higher
education is the perfect motivation to change countries and start a new life elsewhere.
