American Literature

The comparison in readings

The first Author I would like to discuss would be Hemingway. His writing was mostly known is short

writing but usually have to do with economic and social standards. His writing has to do with what people faced

in the everyday lives. From the short story of “Hills like white elephants” This story was talking about a man

had to chose for this woman. This related t the social standard because woman were supposed to listen the men

since they are the superior. In all of Hemingway's stories it shows how women were shown is inferior. Woman

were not seen is equal in life because men were supposed to be more in control, in relationships this was also

shown because Men were the ones who has the saying while the woman were just to follow. This then related to

the american dream because it is shown that everyone is supposed to be equal while in fact the female sand the

males were never to be seen is equal. Hemingway is proving that the american dream is not attainable of all

since women were not equals to men. The American dream is suppose to show equality for all and hence

Hemingway showed that no matter what happens in the country , the AMerican dream will always be excluding

someone.

Next, The next author I will be talking about is adams. Adam was different his writing was out during

the 30s. His writing was to keep people updated about the history of their country. He was a writer and a

historian if you will. He saw that the American dream would be different because he thought people thought of

the American dream to be having motor cars and high wages but if fact the American dream is social, people

should be based off of how much the can produce back to the country. People should never be able to be help

back just because of their gender or race. They should be recognized by others for what they are, regardless if

the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.Just because someone was born into poverty does not mean

they should stay in poverty, people have the right to get away from that if they work for it. The idea that people

must stay at the social class they are in is ridiculous, everyone has a chance to show their intelligence and

capability, no matter where one comes from. It would not be fair otherwise. In his first sentence he states that”
life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according ability or

achievements.” Proving he believes people should be looked at for what they done in life not from where they

started.

Finally, the last author I will be talking about is Robert J. Shiller, his point of view on the American dream

was that it had changed over time, at first during the 1930s when it came out people were about “ it meant

freedom, mutual respect , and equality of opportunity. It has more to do with morality than material success.”

This was the ideal American dream right? It was in fact but is time went of by , around the 1970s and 80s it

changed. People began to have the most expensive things. People cared more about self image than they did

about have a stable life. Owning a home was no longer part of the dream. Trump tried to say that the American

dream is back when in fact it was not. The original version which I stated was the American Dream but people

then began to ignore those values. In 2003, bush passed the American dream downpayment act, which helped

bring a different American dream to the table. People realized that having a home would be the best thing

which it was but completely forgot about the other one. Even in today’s life it can be seen that people try to get

the newest thing and always try to have the best self image they can, but they all forget what is really important

in society. To view all is equal, no matter what circumstances, everyone's the same. However American is not

like that today in the equality of opportunity project it shows how males make way more money than the

African Americans. How can people prosper to their fullest potential when they are always being put down
