Advertised Prices for Specialty Crops at Major Retail Supermarket Outlets ending during the
period of 05/25 to 06/061,2
Dads and Grads
Fathers Day and Graduations took center stage in this weeks retail advertisements, with specials available to celebrate both in the coming weeks.
Onions and potatoes were promoted with potato salads in mind, just as an abundance of fruit options was showcased for refreshing fruit salads and
trays. Cherries, cantaloupes, peaches, nectarines, raspberries, strawberries, grapes, and of course watermelons were very well promoted. An array of
vegetable specials was featured, with asparagus, corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, baby spinach, zucchini, and yellow squash on hand for light and healthy
meals. Grocers touted locally grown produce, such as South Carolina peaches and Ohio grown lettuce.
Total ad numbers this week were 366,848, a 4% increase from last weeks 351,632. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit
202,847 (55% of all ads), onions and potatoes 38,517 (10%), vegetables 122,305 (33%), herbs 990, and ornamentals 2,189. The number of ads for
organic produce was 58,184, 16% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in
price for fruit items this week included Gala apples at 25%, red seedless grapes at 23%, yellow nectarines at 13%, and avocados at 12%. Significant
decreases included cherries at 25% and pineapple at 11%. Significant increases in price for potatoes and onions this week included Russet potatoes
at 50% and sweet yellow onions at 26%. There were no significant decreases. Significant increase in price for vegetables this week included
packaged salad at 19%, tomatoes at 14%, and Iceberg lettuce at 14%. Significant decreases included zucchini at 10% and yellow squash at 14%.
