This paper consists of 5 questions. Answer ALL questions.
1. A student investigates the relationship between the volume and temperature of a fixed mass
of gas at constant pressure of 1 atmosphere. The results she obtained are shown in the table
below.
Temperature / 0C 20 50 100 150 200 250
Volume / cm3 49.1 54.0 61.3 70.5 78.9 87.0

(a) With the aid of a diagram, describe a method that the student could have used to obtain
her results. (6 marks)

(b) Plot a graph of volume, V, against temperature, T. The scale for the x-axis should
include the range -300 0C to + 300 0C, with 50 0C per division. Label the graph line of
V against T “Line 1”. (9 marks)
(c) From the graph, determine V1, the volume of the gas at -120 0C. (2 marks)

(d) At what temperature is the volume 2V1? (2 marks)

(e) Determine the slope, S, of the graph. Include its units. (4 marks)

(f) From your graph, read off the temperature, T0, at which the volume would be zero.
Explain the significance of T0. (3 marks)

(g) The equation of the graph line is V = mT + C. Write down the values of m and C.
(2 marks)

(h) The pressure on the gas is doubled and the experiment is repeated. Draw, on the same
set of axes, the line that would be obtained if the experiment is repeated at this higher
pressure. Label this line “Line 2”. (2 marks)
Total 30 marks
2. (a) Explain what are meant by the terms “velocity” and “acceleration”. (3 marks)

(b)

Figure 1 above shows a car at A moving towards C, with a constant velocity of 30 ms-1. As
the car passes A, the driver sees an obstruction in the road at C. Due to the reaction time of
the driver, the car travels a distance of 27m, at the same velocity, before the brakes are
applied at B. The car now decelerates uniformly and comes to a halt at C, which is 54m
from B.
(i) Calculate the reaction time of the driver. (2 marks)
(ii) The car takes 3.6 s to travel from B to C. In the space below, draw a velocity-time graph
to represent the motion of the car between A and C. (3 marks)

(iii) What is the average speed of the car between B and C? (3 marks)

(iv) If the mass of the car is 750 kg, find the braking force that slows the car between B
and C. (5 marks)

3. (a) The figure below represents a transverse wave on a string vibrating with a frequency of
100 Hz.

(i) State the amplitude and wavelength of the wave. (2 marks)

(ii) Calculate the period and velocity of the wave. (3 marks)

(b) The diagrams below show a series of plane wavefronts approaching (i) a narrow gap and (ii) a
wide gap. Complete the diagrams to show the wavefronts after they have passed through EACH
gap. (4 marks)
(c) The figure below shows plane electromagnetic wavefronts travelling in air with a velocity of
3.0 x 108 ms-1, and meeting a plane refracting surface at an angle of incidence of 300. The
wavelength of the waves in air is 4.0 x 10-7 m and the velocity of the waves in the second medium
is 2.2 x 108 m.

Calculate:
(i) The frequency of the waves in air (2 marks)

(ii) The wavelength of the waves in the second medium and the angle of refraction. (5 marks)

4. In the Kaieteur Falls in Guyana, which are 230 m high, the temperature of the water at the
bottom of the falls is consistently slightly higher than the temperature at the top.

(i) What kind of mechanical energy does the water possess (2 marks)
- At the top of the falls?

- Just before it hits the bottom of the falls?

(ii) Use the principle of conservation of energy to find the speed of the water as it it’s the
bottom of the falls. (3 marks)

(iii) Assuming all the energy of the water goes to raise its temperature, calculate the
temperature rise. (3 marks)
(iv) Suggest why the actual temperature rise is found to be lower than that calculated in
part (iii) above. (1 mark)

(v) The mass of the water that moves over the falls peer second is 200kg. What is the rate
of conversion of potential energy? (2 marks)

(vi) State TWO possible advantages of using the energy of the falls to drive a power station
rather than using an oil-fired power station. (2 marks)

[Acceleration due to gravity = 10 ms-2; Specific Heat Capacity of water = 4200 Jkg-1K-1]
Total 13 marks
5. The yacht shown in the figure below has a mass of 8300 kg.

(a) Determine its weight in air. (2 marks)

(b) For land transport, the yacht is secured on a trailer. Each tyre on the trailer can support
up to a maximum of 7000 N. What is the LEAST number of tyres the trailer should
have to support the yacht adequately? (2 marks)

(c) (i) Many forces act on the yacht yet it is in equilibrium. State TWO conditions that
MUST be satisfied for an object to be in equilibrium. (2 marks)

1.

2.
(d) (i) State Archimedes’ Principle. (2 marks)

(ii) The yacht’s hull is made of steel with density equal 7850 kgm-3. Explain how the
yacht is able to float in sea water of density 1025 kgm-3. (2 marks)

(iii) Calculate the volume of sea water displaced by the yacht as it floats. (4 marks)
