CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter contains the background of the study, statement of the problem,

significance of the study, scope and limitation, theoretical framework and

operational definition of terms of the study.

Background of the Study

Teenage pregnancy is the condition where adolescents aged 10 to 17 had

started child bearing. Teenage pregnancy had been a worldwide issue for

decades. It has been a problem of almost all countries around the globe and had

raised numerous number of campaigns for awareness to prevent and eventually

stop its occurrence.

According to Youth Problems in the Philippines, teenage pregnancy is a

communical problem, a family problem and a personal problem rolled into one.

The causes of teenage pregnancy is different in the sense that it is mostly outside

marriage and carries lots of social stigma. Thus, adolescent sexual behavior is one

of the causes of teenage pregnancy. In our world today, having sex before an

individual reaches 20 years is the “in” thing, it is even normal all over the world and

this is brought about high levels of adolescent pregnancy which creates sexual

According to Child Trends Databank (2018), in 2013, the teen pregnancy rate

reached a new low. It declined by 63 percent from 1990 to 2013, from 118 to 43

pregnancies per 1,000 females ages 15 to 19—the lowest rate reported since

estimates began in 1972. Among females younger than 15, there was a 78 percent

decline from 1990 to 2013 (from 3.4 to 0.7 pregnancies per 1,000 females). Over

the same period, rates for teens ages 15 to 17 declined by 72 percent, from 75 to

21 pregnancies per 1,000 females; the rates for teens ages 18 to 19 declined by

56 percent, from 173 to 76.

The pregnancy rate among teens who are sexually experienced (those who

have ever had intercourse) has also decreased similarly. In 1990, there were 225

pregnancies per 1,000 sexually experienced female teens; by 2011, that rate had

fallen 55 percent, to 101 pregnancies.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research methodologies which includes the

research design, research locale, sample and sampling procedure, research

instruments, data gathering procedures and data analysis to be used by the

researchers in the conduct of consideration.

Research Design

This study is a narrative-qualitative research. According to Atlasi.com,

narrative methods can be considered “real world measures” that are appropriate

when “real life problems” are investigated.

Narrative research is set out by the validation of the audience. It is a useful

part of the social science investigation, but may not always stand alone for

evidence and support for the conclusions of a report. Whether or not, it is a part of

a great presentation or whether it is a stand-alone piece of research, it has to be

accepted on its own merits as individual experience and the interpretation of

thereof. The question arises as to the accuracy of the story looked at objectively

even though it must be viewed in its socio-cultural context. The narrative gives

one’s individual view to be accessed on its merits. Such validation is possible by

corroboration from another narrative.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions and

recommendations of the study.

Summary of Findings

The researchers gathered the informations about the reasons why teenagers

engage in pre-marital sex.

Q1. What pushed you to engage in such act

The result of the gathered information shows a complexity of the subjects’

answer from the question. The interview conducted by the researchers to the

teenage mothers of the municipality revealed that there were a lot of different

factors that affected them resulting to their early pregnancy. The main reasons that

pushed and influenced them to do such act were both internal and external factors

such as family’s situation and curiosity.

Q2. How did it specifically affect you

Teenage pregnancy resulted to a lot of things that affected their lives. Their

studies was clearly affected and it made them shy and conscious about what

others may say about them. They even made sacrifices for them and for the baby

and had suffered its consequences not to mention the hard ones.
