Funny, after reading this post I was diagnosed with anemia and put on an iron
supplement. I amped up my radishes (because I love them) and now I’m doing
well eliminating my need for meds. (Do not discontinue your meds without

I was diagnosed with severe anemia about 2 months ago when the lab
accidentally ran the wrong blood tests (thank goodness for that mistake).
Around the same time frame I started eating radishes morning, noon, and night. I
craved them from the moment I woke up, and went through on average 10
bunches a week. (I have never been a huge fannif them, but didn’t dislike them
either). I seriously thought I must be crazy, when that’s all I would eat for a meal,
crusty French bread, unsalted butter, radishes sliced thin and maldano salt
sprinkled on top. As my iron levels have started to come back up I notice I’m not
insanely craving them anymore. It’s all so strange because while radishes are
very healthy, they don’t contain any iron. Apparently eating ice cubes is a
symptom of anemia, so I wonder if the crunch of radishes replaced ice cubes for
me…

I recently started boiling them till they are slightly tender adding a little salt

I think I’ll try steaming them today to keep the nutrients in but I like to cook the

I knew I loved radishes, but even more now that I know the health benefits of the
spicy little veggie. I just added sliced radishes to my daily protein ritual of eggs,
veggies and turkey. I saute onions, mushrooms, and now radishes, mix in some
nitrate free turkey, and egg beaters. Then I toss in some fresh spinach, and have
a great meal that keeps me going all afternoon.
I stumbled upon mashed radishes over the winter – way better than white
potatoes!

I like making a nice salad with Romaine leaves, Spinach leaves, Kale leaves, and
Arugula leaves, then adding other vegetables including raw cauliflower, pieces
of broccoli from a broccoli crown, tomato, sometimes green pepper, black &
green olives, marinated artichoke, haas avocado–when it’s ripe, and when I can,
some radishes, either sliced, or the slices chopped into matchsticks. Those who
don’t care for an item can have a smaller portion of that item, but still get some
of the health benefits from these items. Taste buds change over time, and my
wife never liked the texture of avocados, but is now fine with them. If you know
of someone who thinks they don’t like radishes, this is a more not-threatening
approach to re-introducing people to radishes. Another way is making a
vegetable soup with some brown rice, barley, and just about every vegetable
imaginable, including radishes cut in matchstick pieces. I make a large pot of
soup, put unused soup in leftover containers and date and store in a chest
freezer. If I need a fast meal to take for lunch, I have something I can grab in a
hurry. I like chicken in mine, heavy on a wide variey of vegetables. That is one
way to “eat the rainbow.”

I add radishes to my nightly salad. This week, the grocery had a bundle of
radishes twice as big as usual. After topping and washing them, I didn’t see how
I could eat that many radishes this week just in salads. I had spaghetti for dinner
one night and as I was sauteeing chopped onions, celery, and green bell pepper
to add to the marinara sauce, I decided to also sautee some chopped radishes.
An excellent decision! Added nutrients and just a subtle spicy taste. Later in the
week, I made stirfry over rice, and I added chopped radishes to other veggies in
the wok. And once again, we were happy with the results. I’m glad warm weather
is finally here because I intend to eat a lot more radishes this year.
