While “private property shall not be taken for public use, without just compensation,” as said according to the Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution, the value of land cannot be based only off of its physical attributes. Often, a family’s land is of great sentimental value to them, and they worked very long and hard to obtain it. (Source B) Losing one’s home will also make the individual have to move, which will most likely entail him/her to find another reasonable place to live, get a new job, and make new friends. It is really easy to be an outsider and say that eminent domain is more “fair” because “why should one person be better off while other’s aren’t as happy?”, but that is a very utilitarianist and communistic way to govern a society. Like with many things in life, people are all for certain punishments until they themselves are affected by them. Nobody wants to have their whole lives thrown into tandem and start all over just so a government can build a new Condo where they used to live.
