Mask That Everyone Wears

Fear and personal acceptance influence one to change their behaviour to be more

irrational or to pretend to someone they are not. A common analogy that can be seen through all

sorts of human life. Yet is the most overlooked analogy. People’s behaviour often change to be

more irrational under the influence of fear. An example of this is “Yes the beast is a hunter …

thing is we couldn’t kill it [said, Jack] … then he [Jack] dived into the forest” (Golding 127).

Jack’s behaviour under influence of fear (of the beast) made him form his own group with an

irrational idea that hunting will solve their problems. This idea is not only stupid but it only

benefits the hunters and not the rest of the group. Under fear Jack resorts to hunting as a way of

surviving/getting rescued and not keeping the signal fire going as Ralph stated multiple times.

This shows that under the influence of fear people throw out reason and become more irrational.

He also wants to appear strong to his hunters so they would accept him as a strong, courageous

leader. This situation is all too common in society, that we often overlook. A common real-life

situation could be found in the New York Times article stated “I made myself into a machine

that gave others what they wanted form me never knowing or valuing my true self” (qtd. In

Safronova). This is an all too common situation in social media. Where people often post fake

content about themselves or say irrational things under the fears that their followers would leave

them and or will not accept their true self (fear of personal acceptance). All this culminated into a
situation where this person lived double lives (one life in the virtual world and the other in the

real world). Yet people will continue to do this even with the fact the reason and logic disputing

this type of behaviour. The reason is it has been programmed into the minds of many forms at

such a young age that it has become muscle memory. Only by valuing our true self and being

calm no matter the situation can we fight this. Until then mistakes will be made with grave

consequences.
