Book
re-opens
on history
The importance of Historical
Societies in a community
cannot be over emphasised.
They provide a link with the past by
recording history which in turn
becomes a valuable reference
document for future generations.
- Cr. Robert Molesworth
Shire President (1989)

By Helen Tatchell

The Beatles sang “It was 20-years ago today…”, but for one local
historical group it has been 30-years ago today.
It was on 2 June 1989 the original and inaugural ‘A Pictorial
History of the Shire of Ballan’ was launched, and on this same
day in 2019, the reprinting of said book was also launched.
Members from Ballan Shire Historical Society Inc joined
members from Bacchus Marsh, Ballarat, Mt Egerton, Bungaree
and Daylesford for an official re-launch at the Ballan Courthouse
on Sunday 2 June 2019.
Moorabool Mayor Cr Paul Tatchell and Cr John Keogh also
attended.
President Catherine Green said it was a huge effort in compilation
and a great way to publicise the Society.
“The book began in 1987 as an idea to document the European
settlement in the area and was originally funded by the 1988 Bi-
Centennial Authority and matched dollar-for-dollar by the Ballan
Shire Council,” she said.
“Thanks must go to three ladies, Jessie Dehnert, Doris Hastie and
Janette Williams for their weeks and months of original work.
“The book today complements the original book and the Society
is very appreciative of local monetary grants to reprint from
Ballan & District Community Bank Branch and Moorabool Wind
Farm, as these grants add to the life of local communities.”

Grape vines branch out By Meg Kennedy

A Moorabool winery is set to make its debut in Japan, following a

recent State Government grant to export to East Asia.
St Anne’s Winery was the recipient of a $10,000 grant as part of the
State Government’s Wine Growth Fund initiative.
The grant will allow St Anne’s to export to East Asian markets and
seek a consultant, to aid in analysis and advice for entering the new
market in Japan.
St Anne’s Winery Export Director Angus McLean said the winery’s
export strategy “has been rolling for 20-years”, but the introduction
of the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement in
early-2015 saw Japan become a “market of interest” to St Anne’s.
“In the last 4-years, this market has shown significant growth and
alerted us to the fact that we should be engaging with it,” he said.
Mr McLean said St Anne’s began developing a strategy to market to
the Japan market, with the assistance of the Victorian Government
in 2016.
As for the benefits for St Anne’s, Mr McLean said along with
the growth of the winery’s export strategy and sales to foreign
markets, the new venture “allows investment back into our
product, [creating] vineyard expansion, which translates as jobs
and increased viability.”
“Being able to reach cities in Asian markets with the same
population as Australia, is testament to the importance of this
campaign to grow our business,” he said.
Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle said that “Victorian
winemakers produce some fantastic wines, and we’re proud to
back St Anne’s Winery in growing their business.”
Mr McLean says the wines are estimated to debut in the East Asian
market in “10-15 months” time.

For those who’ve come across the seas

By Kevin Harper

There may be some current controversy over certain lines in

the National Anthem but at Tuesday night’s Moorabool Shire
Citizenship ceremony there was no question of the truth of
‘beauty rich and rare’ as 20-new citizens gathered with 100
guests, including Shire dignitaries, in the Council Chamber’s
at Ballan to have Australian Citizenship conferred on them.
Traditional dress and colours from around the world
sat comfortably and in harmony with each other whilst
Moorabool Mayor Cr Paul Tatchell and the Moorabool Town
Crier looked far from Aussie in their lace, jabot, frock coat
and tricorn hat. Outside it was cold, dark and wet - inside the
festive atmosphere helped by the Aussie music from Megan
and Ginger from local group Claritude.
Whilst some of the new citizens, like Brian Williams from
Gordon, have lived here for decades, others have very
recently arrived and their reasons from leaving their birth
lands are as varied as the colours as the costumes they wore
to the ceremony.
The importance that the new citizens and their supporters
attached to the ceremony was evident in the dignity they
each brought to the occasion.
Moorabool is growing at a rate that could not have been
envisaged 30 years ago – with the increase in population
we are seeing new complementary cultures introduced that
sit well alongside the mainly European culture established
from our time as a place of important service stops en-route
to the Goldfields.
Our towns are well placed to be a harmonious patchwork
of cultures from the Old World and the New. So much we can
share with each other in celebration and support.
When the National Anthem was sung, there was such
confident determination in the singing that it could only
have been followed by the refrain of that other Aussie classic:
“we are one, but we are many … I am, you are, WE are
Australian”. Juulke Castelijn with Mayor Tatchell and Marco Javier Cock Cardona. Photos – Kevin Harper
