Development of design methodologies for the improvement of wind and thermal comfort in the
urban environment

Jianlei Niu · Cheuk Ming Mak · K.T. Tse · Show all 13 collaborators

Goal: The widespread use of air-conditioning in indoor built environment is the major culprit of
many environmental problems in today’s world. Therefore a city that encourages outdoor
activities has to accommodate both sustainability and livability.

Furthermore, it is believed that the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon will persist and “out-last”
urban air pollution, which will be mitigated in the foreseeable future via source control such as
the employment of electric vehicles and development of public transportation already deployed
in many European cities. While UHI phenomenon is not new, its adverse impacts and scale are
becoming unprecedented due to rapid urbanization,
particularly in Asia. This forces people to stay longer indoors, encourages urban planners and
property developers to provide more air-conditioned indoor facilities, further aggravating the
problems in a vicious cycle.

The contributions to science and engineering knowledge are :

1. systematic understanding of the local wind and thermal comfort conditions in real life and
their in uential factors via onsite measurements of environmental parameters and questionnaire
surveys of city residents;
2. insight into the generic air ow and turbulence structures of several typical building forms, the
lift-up design in particular, using wind tunnel modeling techniques;
3. an evaluation of the detached eddy simulation (DES) turbulence model, which is a hybrid of
the Reynolds-average based Navier-Stokes (RANS) and large eddy-simulation (LES) models;
4. a practical numerical scheme to include solar radiation and long wave surface thermal
radiation in computational uid dynamics (CFD) air ow modelling;
5. a human-body thermo-physiology based thermal comfort model integrated with CFD and
thermal analysis which is capable of simulating the transient, asymmetric effects on a human
body and the resident activity and clothing levels

Assessment of in uence from surrounding buildings by adopting LES
Article
May 2019
Jianlin Liu · Xuelin Zhang · Jianlei Niu · K.T. Tse
An architectural feature, ‘lift-up’ (or elevated) design, has been reported as an
effective design to improve weak pedestrian-level wind (PLW) conditions in a
subtropical high-density city. This design provides a semi-outdoor space…
