Development of design methodologies for the improvement of wind and thermal comfort in the
urban environment

Goal: The widespread use of air-conditioning in indoor built environment is the major culprit of
many environmental problems in today’s world. Therefore a city that encourages outdoor
activities has to accommodate both sustainability and livability.
Furthermore, it is believed that the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon will persist and “out-last”
urban air pollution, which will be mitigated in the foreseeable future via source control such as
the employment of electric vehicles and development of public transportation already deployed
in many European cities. While UHI phenomenon is not new, its adverse impacts and scale are
becoming unprecedented due to rapid urbanization,
particularly in Asia. This forces people to stay longer indoors, encourages urban planners and
property developers to provide more air-conditioned indoor facilities, further aggravating the
problems in a vicious cycle.
