Thank you for purchasing the TOPCON Ophthalmometer OM-4. To get the from the best use
from the instrument, please carefully read these instructions and place it in a convenient location
for future reference.

PRECAUTIONS
1. Always use or keep this instrument where it will be unaffected by heat, humid-
ity or dust, and avoid exposing the instrument to direct sunlight.
2. Check that all cables are correctly and firmly connected.
3. Never touch the lens or prism surfaces with your finger or with any hard ob-
ject.
4. Always turn the power source off before disconnecting the cables or when re-
placing the bulb.
5. When disconnecting the cables, do not use excessive force and never attempt
to unplug the connection by directly pulling on the cable.
6. If any trouble occurs with your instrument or its accessories, first refer to the
troubleshooting guide in this manual and carry out the checks listed. If nothing
is found by your check, then ask your dealer or TOPCON to service it.
7. Always turn the power source off and replace the cover on the instrument
when it is not in use.

1) Positioning the patient
Place a suitable quantity of pads on the chin rest
and fix them in place, with the two pad fixing pins,
as in 2-2 4).
Have the patient sit relaxed before the instrument.
Next. adjust the Adjustable Instrument Table (ex:

when corneal astigmatism exists, the mark
of the top mire image and the mark of the

4.1 Exchange of the Lamp
The mire place (23) and lamp will be quite hot,
should the lamp go out while the instrument is in
use. Therefore, let them cool down a little bit and
then replace lamp in the following manner:
(1) After switching off the Power switch (5) of the
Power supply unit (4), disconnect the Power
cord (3).
(2) Take a firm hold of the leveling pin (16) and
revolve it about two or three times in the coun-

the lamp. Revolve it in the counter-clockwise di-
rection, too, and detach. Fuse holder
(4) Insert the replacement bulb and revolve it
clockwise until it stops and is securely attached.
(5) Replace the mire plate carefully. The mire plate
is notched, therefore, line up the notched sec-
tion with an alignment pin inside the instrument.
Push it in fully and then screw in the leveling pin
which will fix the mire plate securely.
(6) Connect the power cord, Switch on the Power
switch, and check whether illumination lamps
are lighted.

4.3 Cleaning the instrument

1) Cleaning the Lenses and Mirrors
As a general rule. the surfaces of the lenses and
mirrors should not be touched, as much as possi-
ble.
When dirty, try to brush away the dust and dirt with.
the accessory cleaning brush, which should, fur-
thermore, be stored in accessory drawer when not
in actual use.
If the lens and/or mirror cannot be cleaned by
brushing, however, wipe the surface with a soft,
well-washed cotton cloth, linen cloth, etc., which
can be lightly dipped into a solution of 4 parts ether

any kind of chemical solution.

shape of mire images.

6. FEATURES
6.1 Internal Reading Scales
The millimetre scales for the radius of curvature
(bottom figures) and the diopter scales for the cor-
neal refractive power (top fi9ures) of both horizon-
tal(H) and vertical(V) axes, are seen in the field of
view, together with the mire images, during the
measurement.

6.2 Wide Range of Measurements

Range of measurements is extremely wide, with
millimetre scale covering 5.5 to 12.0 mm and the
diopter scale covering 60 to 28 diopters.

6.3 Highly Precise Measurements

Mire images are very sharp and easy to coincide,
producing measurement results with the mini-mum
of individual variations.

6.4 Speedy. Accurate Focusing

Adjustments
Focusing adjustments are speedy but very accu-
rate, requiring coincidence of double images only
which is simple and without individual variations.
