Minimum spacing of main bars?

The distance between reinforcement bars must be such to allow the largest expected concrete size gravel to pass
between them. In order to have properly anchored reinforcement, it is mandatory for rebars to be surrounded by
concrete.
The minimum spacing between two reinforcement bars should be at least equal to the maximum coarse aggregate
dimension plus a margin of 5 mm. For Greece, the maximum aggregate grains dimension for usual concrete, is 32
mm and for self-compacting concrete is 16 mm.

These spacing requirements are easily met in slabs and columns. However in beams extra care must be paid mainly
at the support and at the joint areas.
Minimum size of vertical stirrups?

 Type 1: Stirrup ends are bent inwards at a 45° angle (often also called 135° angle). The minimum length of the hooks is 6
cm (i.e. 10 x diameter).
 Type 2: Stirrups are bent 1¾ times. Such stirrups are particularly useful in very narrow tie columns

Minimum spacing of vertical stirrups?

The armature of the vertical ties starts at the very bottom of the foundation. The minimum number of lengthwise
rebars is four (vertical ties with only 3 rebars are not permissable).Spacing of the stirrups:Stirrups are spaced every
20 cm except for the first and last sixth of the height (H/6) where they are doubled, resulting in a spacing of 10 cm.
The first stirrups above the plinth and the last stirrups below the bond beam should be spaced by 5 cm

Minimum development length/embedment length splicing?

By reference to the 2002 edition of Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (MSJC) (ref. 5), the 2003 IBC
requires the minimum development length for reinforcing bars and wires designed by the allowable stress method
to be calculated using Equation 1 (see Tables 1 and 2). ld = 0.0015db Fs , (Eqn. 1) but not less than 12 in. (305 mm)
for bars or 6 in. (152 mm) for wires. When epoxy coated bars or wires are used, the development length determined
by Equation 1 is required to be increased by 50 percent

Minimum thickness of slab?

In residential buildings , the slab thickness is kept as 115mm. However, there could be locations where this is
150mm( for example in the sunk slabs.)

In case of any industrial buildings, the slab thickness could go up-to 200mm specially if there are some machine
foundations or pedestals located on the roof slab.

Minimum size of reinforcement of slab?

Thickness of the slab is decided based on span to depth ratio specified in IS456-2000. Minimum reinforcement is
0.12% for HYSD bars and 0.15% for mild steel bars. The diameter of bar generally used in slabs are: 6 mm, 8 mm, 10
mm, 12mm and 16mm.
Minimum spacing of reinforcement of slab?

Minimum concrete cover reinforcement of slab?

The minimum required cover thickness for slab reinforcement usually ranges between 20 and 30 mm depending on
the environmental conditions present throughout the building’s service life. The 20 mm would apply to a dry climate
and the 30 mm to a seaside location.
The required cover is maintained only with the use of special stands called spacers. These must not be affected by
corrosion and should be placed approximately every 1.00 m.
The simplest solution for providing the necessary cover thickness of the reinforcement is special plastic underlayers
like the ones shown in the above figure. Usage of steel rebar spacers is forbidden as they are highly susceptible to
corrosion.

Minimum size of reinforcement of column?

9″x 12″ (225 MM x 300 MM) which is the minimum recommended size. I have designed hundreds of buildings, and
never had the misfortune of any structural component ever failing due to loads. I always use M20 grade concrete for
construction, as it is the minimum recommended grade of concrete is IS 456:2000. Please don’t skimp on the quality
of concrete. The minimum steel in a 9″ x 9″ column is 4 bars of 12 MM with stirrups of 8 MM steel rings at a
distance of 150 MM centre to centre. In a 9″ x 12″ column, I add two more bars, to take the total to 6 bars of 12 MM
diameter. This design can be safe for up to G+1 floors. But there are a lot of other factors involved.

Minimum number of reinforcement of column?

size of the reinforcement shall be 12mm . for square columns minimum 4 numbers bars needed. for circular
columns 6 numbers minimum needed.

Minimum dimension of concrete column?

A square column of 225mm x 225mm or a rectangular column of 250mm x 300mm. Rectangular column is preferred
over square column to avoid slenderness problem.
