SUBJECT:CYLINDER HEAD INSTALLATION PROCEDURE STANDARDIZED

INTRODUCTION

To provide improved clamp loading of the cylinder head bolts on Series 92 ™ diesel-fueled engines, the head-
to-block bolt tightening procedure has been revised.

DETAILS AND REASON

Detroit Diesel has found that the cylinder head installation procedure currently used on Series 92 alcohol-fueled
engines provides more consistent clamp loading of cylinder head bolts than the procedure used on Series 92
diesel-fueled engines. Because of the improved cylinder head mounting that results from this procedure, Detroit
Diesel requires that only this procedure be used when installing the cylinder head(s) on any Series 92 engine.
This change is in effect immediately. The torque-turn procedure for diesel-fueled engines currently shown in the
Series 92 Service Manual should no longer be used.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

When installing a cylinder head on any Series 92 engine, refer to section 1.2 of the Detroit Diesel Series 92
Service Manual, 6SE379, and follow all “Pre-Installation Inspection” steps and all steps under “Install Cylinder
Head.” Use the following procedure in place of Step 8:

NOTICE:

When replacing the cylinder head(s) on a Series 92 engine, the required installation
procedure and torque specifications must be used to insure the integrity of the cylinder
head-to-block seal. Failure to follow the required cylinder head installation procedure
and observe required torque values may result in head-to-block seal leakage, causing loss
or contamination of lubricating oil or coolant or both and subsequent severe engine
damage.

1. Using an accurately calibrated torque wrench and working in increments of 50 lb-ft (41 N·m), gradually
tighten the cylinder head mounting bolts to 150 lb-ft (204 N·m) torque in the sequence shown. See Figure
1. Hold the wrench at this torque for 2 - 3 seconds to allow bolts to turn while the compression seals yield
to their crushed thickness.
Figure 1 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence
2. When all bolts have been torqued to 150 lb-ft (204 N·m), perform the following operations one bolt at a
time in the sequence shown in Figure 1. The loosening, retightening, and torque-turn procedures that
follow must be completed on each bolt separately before moving on to the next bolt.

NOTE:
Detroit Diesel recommends using Kent-Moore® torque angle meter tool J 37990 for the following operations.
If not available, use an accurately calibrated torque wrench and pre-mark a socket with four marks 90 degrees
apart. At the start of each turn, mark the cylinder head with a grease pencil at one mark on the socket and turn
to the next mark.
1. Starting with the number 1 bolt in the sequence , back off the bolt until loose (at least one-half turn). Then
tighten the bolt to 100 lb-ft (136 N·m) torque.
2. Rotate the bolt clockwise 90 °. Try to turn the bolt in a single arc with one pull of the wrench.
3. Repeat this procedure for each bolt in the sequence. This will insure an even clamp load on the cylinder
head.
4. Refer to the engine service manual and, beginning with step 9, complete the installation of the cylinder head.

ADDITIONAL SERVICE INFORMATION

Additional service information is available in the Detroit Diesel Series 92 Service Manual, 6SE379. The next
revision to this manual will include the revised information. As a convenience to holders of the Series 92
Service Manual, information in service manual format is attached. The page(s) may be inserted into the
manual.

NOTE:
Manual insert pages are numbered for insertion into the current Series 92 Service Manual dated
October 1988. Service Manuals are available from authorized Detroit Diesel Distributors. If this
bulletin was obtained from the Internet, service manual insert page(s) are available by returning to
the “Getting Started” screen, clicking under “Attachment Pages,” and printing the pages.
