students. They spend their time using social media. Using

this social media became their habit as well. Social

media has made a huge impact on the lifestyle of every

individual around the world. High and average class of

society, teenagers or adolescent is now onto social

media. The primary users of social media are students.

They check their accounts time to time leaving only few

hours for study, doing household chores and socializing.

Most of their time was being consumed by social media.

Students preferred to use facebook, twitter, instagram

and youtube and other type of social media instead of

helping their parents and studying their lessons, unlike

then, when there is no social media. Teenagers back then

prioritize their study. They even read books just to do

their homework and projects. After school, they will help

their parents. They are responsible and hard working.

With this at hand, the Researchers want to know the

effects of social media to students. The purpose of this

study is to survey how social media affects the lifestyle

of Senior High School students and briefly discuss

This section discusses the literature, articles related

to the study.

Review of Related Literature

11

Since the popularization of the internet in the 1990s

and the emergence of social networking sites in 1994 and

beyond, there is abundant evidence that millions of

people across the world use social media on a regular

basis for various reasons (Daluba & Maxwell, 2013).

Though social media use cuts across all age groups,

studies have however shown that it is predominant among

young persons (Onuoha & Saheed, 2011). This is because

studies have shown that social media has both positive

and negative effects on students (Yahya, Olalekan,

Afolabi, & Ayelaagbe 2013). however, anxiety, poor eating

habits, short attention spans, subverted higher-order

reasoning skills among frequent users of social media, a

tendency to overestimate one’s ability to multi-task ,

and technology being seen as a substitute for the

analytical reasoning process, have been noted as its

potential risks (Rosen, 2011; Anderson & Rainie, 2012).

Shah et al. (2001) proposed that student users are

affected by the internet and this impact is determined by

the type of internet usage. They are positively affected

by the informative use of internet while having drastic

12

impact of recreational use of internet on them. Also,

Oskouei (2010) proposed that internet is advantageous to

both students and teachers if used as a tool of knowledge

creation and dissemination because many other communities

inside social networking websites motivate user for this

kind of inappropriate actions.

Students are already expose to different social media

(according to American Academy of Pediatrics (2011).

Using of social media networking sites is among the most

common activities of today’s children and adolescents.

Digital technologies or new media are often regarded as

comprising internet, mobile phones, social and

interactive media. They have been characterize as a

highly interactive, dense, compressible, networking and

manipulative (wikepedia). The internet provides useful

ways of connecting ideas and people and accessing a vast

array of information across the world.

Negative discourse, gossips and comments shared online

are believed to have more defamatory effects compared to

those heard and shared face to face (Hinaya and Palchin,

2010).

In spite of the benefits we can get from using the

13

internet. The new media possess huge psychosocial use

including inappropriate context privacy issues, 3rd party

and peer-to-peer influence (Boyd, 2007 O’ Keeffe and

Clarke-Plarson, 2011)

A review of the impacts of social media on children

and adolescents highlighted that young people are prone

to learning distraction, anxiety, depression and other

psychological disorders making them even more to future

health problems (O’ Keeffe and Clarke-Larson, 2011;

Seefhout, it al.,2009) A phenomenon known as “facebook

depression” explains the correlation between social media

exposure and depressive states (Johnson, 2011; Darila,

Stroad and Stan, 2009; Strum, 2011)

Chapter IV

Interpretation of Data
18

1. What are the benefits that you can get through

social media? In what way are you using it? How

about the negative effects?

In this study, the Researchers gathered data regarding

the negative effects and the benefits of social media.

Out of ten (10) respondents, nine (9) respondents

experienced the benefits of social media. Respondents one

(1), three (3) and five (5) highlighted the benefits of

social media.

“Siguro I get to socialize more tapos mas nakakakilala

ako ng ibang tao, then nare-reach ko yung mga family

members ko na wala dyan sa lugar namin o nasa malayo.

Nagiging introvert na akong tao na mas gusto ko’y mag-isa

na lang ako or tahimik.”

(Maybe, I get to socialize more, I get to know more

people, and I could connect with my relatives who stay or

live abroad. I am being an introvert that I just want to

19

be alone and quiet.

“Mas madali akong nakikipag-communicate sa iba tapos

nagkakaroon ako ng madaming kaibigan samantalang yung

negative naman eh yun nga masyado kong ginugugol yung

oras ko dun, mas napapahaba yung oras ko sa paggamit ng

social media.”

(It’s easier for me to communicate with other people and

I gain a lot of friends. However, the negative effect for

me is that I spend most of my time using social media.)

“So yun nga katulad ng sinabi nila through social media

(Just like what other people say, through social media, I

gain more friends, I can communicate even with those who

are in a far place, and I can express my emotions through

it. I forget to do my assignment. )

20

According to them social media has a biggest part plays

an important role to them because through social media

they get to socialize with other people and gain friend.

While four (4) out of ten (10) respondents experienced

negative effects of using social media. The respondents

stated the following:

“Updated ako sa news, sa mga trends. Negative effects,

nagiging mas lamang ang spend ko ng time sa social media

kaysa sa pag-aaral.”

(It keeps me updated about the news and trends. The

negative effect of social media is that I spend more time

on it rather than on studying. )

“I can get information, updates of what happening around

the world. Time is wasted, mind corruption, head ache”

(I can get information updates of what happening around

the world. Time is wasted, mind corruption, headache.)

“first of all, easier communication, easier information

gathering, job inquiry and other leisure things. Too much

21

love will kill you, meaning too much time in social media

might affect your health, body clock and sleeping

habits.”

(First of all, easier communication, easier information

gathering, job inquiry and other leisure things. Too much

love will kill you, meaning too much time in social media

might affect your health, body clock and sleeping

habits.)

As stated social media also plays negative impact on the

students- respondents on doing bad things, they may adapt

it in their daily living.

2. Do you think that you are able to do your

responsibilities even though you are using social

media most of the time? Why?

In this study, researchers want to know if social media

hinder students particularly in Accountancy, Business and

Management from doing their responsibilities.

Researchers, therefore, collected data regarding this.

22

Base on the data researchers gathered, 2 out of 10

respondents said that they were not able to perform their

responsibilities. One stated that he/she gets distracted

while the other respondents lose discipline and sense of

time management.

“Sa akin of course nagiging responsible naman ako just a

matter of time management.”

(For me, yes, of course, I’m being responsible and it’s

just a matter of time management.)

“Most of the time, no, because most of social media

sites is a big part of people entertainment. When you

start engaging yourself into that activity you lose

discipline and sense of time management.”

Out of 10 respondents, 8 of them were still able to

perform their responsibilities regardless of using social

media due to time management and limitations.

“Yes because mina-manage ko ang oras ko nang maayos.”

(Yes, because I manage my time wisely.)

23

“Sa akin, alam ko naman yung limitations ko basta

nakatingin yung mga magulang ko, nagagawa ko yung

responsibilities kahit gumagamit ako ng social media.”

(For me, I am aware of my limitations. Whenever my

parents are watching me, rest assured that I do my

responsibilities even while I’m using social media.)

3. How does social media affect the way you think and

act? In what particular way?

In this study, researchers gathered the collected data

regarding the effect of social media in thinking and

acting behaviour concerning the u8se of social media. It

may affect how students think and act positively and

negatively.

Out of ten(10) respondents. Four(4) respondents

experienced positive effect in the way they think and

act. The respondents said that through social media,

he/she gained knowledge about the current issue around

the globe which is a good thing because as a student, we

24

need to be aware. They also said that they are motivated

and inspired because of inspirational stories/quotes they

saw on social media.

“I think lalong lumalawak yung nalalaman ko especially sa

mga issues around the globe.

(I think, I gained knowledge especially in the issues

around the globe.)”

“Depending on the social media that I’ve visit, for

example Facebook, twitter, some of the posts or the

tweets are inspirational, in that way I can be inspired

or motivated and there are some posts from unknown or

random people especially teenagers that are

inappropriate, rude, nonsense that affects the way I

think towards them. I am sometimes being judgmental

regarding their post and my thought affect my emotions

and that is being mad.”

(Depending on the social media sites that I visit, for

example, Facebook, and twitter, some of the posts or the

tweets are Inspirational. In that way, I can be inspired

or motivated. There are some posts from unknown or random

25

people, especially teenagers that are inappropriate,

rude, nonsense that affect the way I think towards them.

I am sometimes being judgmental regarding their post and

my thought affects my emotions and that is being mad.)

“Sa Facebook puro inspiration ang nakikita kong posts

then namo-motivate naman ako.”

(What I see the most on Facebook is inspirational. In

that way, I get motivated. )

“For example memes, sometimes unconsciously we use all

source of punch lines like “weh di nga” or “edi wow”

(For example, memes, sometimes unconsciously we use all

source of punch lines like “weh di nga” or “edi wow”.

In the data we gathered from the respondents, six(6) out

of ten(10) respondents experienced negative effects in

the way they think and act. They said that they want to

be alone and use social media instead of socializing with

other. Respondents also said that they can adapt what

they saw on social media and easily believe on the

information that other people posted in social media

26

without thinking if it is true or not. They can also be

distracted and forget their responsibilities.

“Siguro dahil social media yun, nagiging introvert na

akong tao, na mas gusto ko ay sarili ko yung gagawa,

naaapektuhan na ang socialization ko.”

(Because it’s social media, I am becoming an introvert

and it really affects my socialization.)

“Siguro dahil sa social media nagkakaroon tayo ng ano,

parang napapasunod tayo sa uso na naa-adapt na natin yung

ginagawa nila.”

(Because of social media, we adapt what is trending, what

most of people do.)

“Naapektuhan sa pag gamit ng social media isolated kana

minsan na hindi muna gu-gustuhing makipag socialize sa

ibang tao then gusto mo nalang phone ang hawak.”

(Because of social media, I feel like I am isolated that

I don’t want to socialize with other people and I always

want to carry and use my phone.)

27

“Ang epekto sa akin ng social media ay kung ano yung

nababasa na tama sa paniniwala ko parang

yun na yung kalimitang ginagaya

ko.”

(The effect of social media to me is I do and believe

what I see which I know is right.)

“Minsan, may point na nadi-distract ka na. At minsan may

mga issue na kumakalat sa social media then naaapektuhan

ka.”

(There comes a time when you get too distracted. Also,

whenever there are certain issues that are talked about

around the world, it really affects you.)

“Minsan nagagaya ko yung mga nakikita ko sa social media”

(Sometimes, I copy and do what I see on social media.)

Based on the collected data that the researchers

gathered, in ten(10) respondents, there are four(4)

respondents experienced the positive effect in thinking

and acting behavior while six(6) of them experienced

28

negative effect of thinking and acting behavior.

4. As a student, do you think it is appropriate to use

social media during class hour? Why or why not?

In this study, researchers intended to know if it is

appropriate to use social media during class hour in

students particularly in ABM students. Researchers,

therefore, collected data regarding this.

Based on the data gathered of the researchers, 6 out of

10 respondents disagreed in using social media during

class hour, on the other hand, other respondents says

that it is appropriate to use social media during class

hour only if it is necessary and it depends on the

situation.

These are some responds of the 6 respondents who

disagreed in using social media during class hour:

“So as a student I disagree using social media during

class kasi as a student mas focus ka dapat sa pag-aaral

29

and dapat you know your priorities.

(As a student, I disagree on using social media during

class hours because I have to focus on my studies and I

should know my priorities.)

“No, kasi disrespect yun, walang atensyong makinig sa

klase. Mapapasama ang level ng performance sa klase.”

(No, because it is a sign of disrespect. You lose

attention during discussion and may affect the level of

your class performance.)

“No, kasi kapag class hour’s nag-aaral ka so kapag

gumagamit ka ng social media distracted ka.”

(No, because during class hours, you should be studying.

And, when you use social media, you’ll be distracted.)

Based on the findings, it is not appropriate to use

social media during class hours because, somehow it shows

disrespect and students get distracted. Furthermore,

during class hour students should have been studying. But

on the other hand, the remaining respondent says that it

is appropriate to use social media only if it is

30

necessary.

“It depends on the situation, halimbawa pag kailangan ng

internet sa isang particular subject siguro pwede naman.”

(It depends on the situation. For example, when it is

needed for a particular subject.)

“There are times na necessary to use social media

especially when you need to research something pero most

of the time, inappropriate because nadi-distract ka.”

(There are times that it’s necessary to use to social

media especially when you need to research something but

most of the time, it’s inappropriate because it’s a

distraction.)

“If necessary katulad nga sa research pag kailangan and

if allowed then it’s fine.”

(If necessary, yes. When you have to research something

or when you are allowed to do so.)

So with this, some respondents disagreed while other are

not in using social media during class hour. Students

31

have their own reason why they social media.

5. Do you think social media affects the way you

socialize with your family, friends and other

people? Explain your reason.

Social media is believed to have a great effect on how

people socialize with their families,, friends and other

people. Since the subject of this study is students who

have the greatest number of users of social media,

researchers collected data regarding this.

7 out of 10 respondents agreed that social media affect

the way they socialize with their families, friends and

other people. Social media affect them in both positive

and negative way regarding on how they socialize.

“Yes, sa part ng family ko other than nare reach out ko

sila kahit malayo sila, syempre we connect more through

social media. Sa friends ko medyo napapalayo na ang loob

ko sa kanila kasi nga mas nakukuha ang atensyon ko ng

social media.”

(Yes. When it comes to my family, I can reach out to them

32

even if we are miles away from each other through social

media. When it comes to my friends, we lose connection

because social media has my attention most of the time.)

On the other hand, 1 out of 10 respondents answered that

social media has no effects on how he/she socialize.

“Siguro hindi, kasi magaling din naman akong makisama”

(No, because I am good at socializing with other people.)

Chapter V
Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

A. Summary

This study was conducted because the researchers

want to know the effects of social media in the

lifestyle of students particularly in Accountancy,

Business and Management. This study is an example of

Basic research. Researchers conducted an interview to

33

gather an information and data needed. This study was

conducted inside of Oriental Mindoro National High

School.

B. Conclusion

Over all, based on the study, Researchers found out

that social media affects the lifestyle of the

students particularly Accountancy, Business and

Management in both positive and negative way.

Regardless of this negative effect, it will not hinder

an individual because it varies on how students will

use social media.

C. Recommendation

Based on the data that the Researchers gathered,

the effect of social media depends on how users will use

social media. Researchers wholeheartedly recommended the

following:

To the Students

1. Do not use social media most of your time.

34

2. It will be better if social media will be used only

in great need and if it is really necessary.

3. Balance your time properly. Take only a small amount

of your time for social media to properly do your

tasks and make the responsibilities.

To the other Researchers

It will be better if this study would be studied

further with bigger scope to have students be much more

educated in the usage of social media.

lose discipline and sense

of time management.)

R9: “Oo, kasi may control

ako sa aking sarili”

(Yes, because I am in

control of myself.)

R10: “Of course, it’s all

about priorities, time

management and hindi

ginagamit everytime.”

about priorities, time

management.)

people do.)

R4: “Naapektuhan sa pag

gamit ng social media

isolated kana minsan na

hindi muna gu-gustuhing

makipag socialize sa

ibang tao then gusto mo

nalang phone ang hawak.”

(Because of social media,

I feel like I am isolated

that I don’t want to

50

socialize with other

people and I always want

to carry and use my

phone.)

R5: “Ang epekto sa akin

ng social media ay kung

ano yung nababasa na

tama sa paniniwala ko

parang

yun na yung kalimitang

ginagaya

ko.”

(The effect of social

media to me is I do and

nadi-distract ka na. At

minsan may mga issue na

kumakalat sa social media

then naaapektuhan ka.”

(There comes a time when

you get too distracted.

Also, whenever there are

certain issues that are

talked about around the

world, it really affects

you.)

R7: “Minsan nagagaya ko

yung mga nakikita ko sa

social media”

(Sometimes, I copy and do

what I see on social

media.)

R8: “Depending on the

social media that I’ve

visit, for example

Facebook, twitter, some

of the posts or the

52

tweets are inspirational,

in that way I can be

inspired or motivated and

there are some posts from

unknown or random people

especially teenagers that

are inappropriate, rude,

nonsense that affects the

way I think towards them.

I am sometimes being

judgmental regarding

their post and my thought

affect my emotions and

that is being mad.”

inspiration ang nakikita

kong posts then namo-

Using social R1: “It depends on the

media in class situation, halimbawa pag

hour kailangan ng internet sa

isang particular subject

siguro pwede naman.”

(It depends on the

situation. For example,

when it is needed for a

particular subject.)
55

R2: “There are times na

necessary to use social

media especially when you

need to research

something pero most of

the time, inappropriate

because nadi-distract

ka.”

(There are times that

it’s necessary to use to

social media especially

when you need to research

something but most of the

time, it’s inappropriate

because it’s a

distraction.)

R3: “So as a student I

disagree using social

media during class kasi

as a student mas focus ka

dapat sa pag-aaral and

56

dapat you know your

priorities.

(As a student, I disagree

on using social media

during class hours

because I have to focus

on my studies and I

should know my

priorities.)

R5: “If necessary katulad

nga sa research pag

kailangan and if allowed

then it’s fine.”

(If necessary, yes. When

you have to research

something or when you are

allowed to do so.)

R6: “No, kasi disrespect

yun, walang atensyong

makinig sa
57

klase. Mapapasama ang

level ng performance sa

klase.”

(No, because it’s a sign

of disrespect. You lose

attention during

discussion and may affect

the level of your class

performance.)

R7: “No, kasi kapag class

hour’s nag-aaral ka so

kapag gumagamit ka ng

social media distracted

ka.”

(No, because during class

hours, you should be

studying. And, when you

use social media, you’ll

5. Do you think social media affects the way you
socialize with your family, friends and other
people? Explain your reason.

Socializing R1: “Yes, sa part ng

with others family ko other than nare

reach out ko sila kahit

malayo sila, syempre we

connect more through

social media. Sa friends

ko medyo napapalayo na

ang loob ko sa kanila

kasi nga mas nakukuha ang

atensyon ko ng social

media.”

(Yes. When it comes to my

family, I can reach out

to them even if we are

miles away from each

60

other through social

media. When it comes to

my friends, we lose

connection because social

media has my attention

most of the time.)

R2: “Yes, as I have

mention before nabu-built

up lalo yung confidence

ko na makipag-communicate

and makipag socialize.”

(Yes. As I have mentioned

before, the level of my

confidence in

communicating and

socializing is boosted.)

R3: “Sa akin naman sa

tingin ko nakaka-affect

siya sa akin in terms sa

friendship dumadami yung

61

friends ko, samantalang

sa family ko naman parang

nawawalan masyado ng oras

kasi mas ginugugol ko

yung oras ko sa pag gamit

ng social media”

(For me, it affects me in

terms of friendship. My

group of friends get

bigger while as for my

family, my time for them

is lessened since I focus

my time on social media.

R5: “Pag sa friends nga

kahit malayo sila

nagkakaroon ako ng chance

namareach sila through

the help of social media

sa family naman mas lalo

kong nakikilala ang

family ko dahil sa mga

62

pinopost nila”

(I can reach out to my

friends, even to those

who are far from me,

through social media.

Also, I get to know more

about my family because

of what they post on

social media. )

R6: “Sa tingin ko, oo at

hindi, depende sa

gumagamit sa social media

halimbawa kagaya ko,

although gumagamit ako ng

social media pero hindi

naman yun nakakaapekto sa

pakikipag socialize ko sa

aking parents at

kaibigan. Both positive

and negative effects ay

mayroon.”
63

(In my point of view, it

can be yes or no. It

depends on the person who

use social media. For me,

even though I use it, it

doesn’t affect the way I

socialize with my family

and friends. There is

negative as well as

positive effect. )

R7: “Depende sa sitwasyon

dahil kontrol ko naman.”

(It depends on the

situation. Because for

me, I am in control of

myself.)

R8: “Yes, there are two

ways on how social media

affects people, one is,

it strengthen the

communication among the

64

family

far from your love ones,

second is, it weakens the

relationship among the

family because the time

for my family are being

taken away by the

engagement with the

addiction to social

media.”

65

magaling din naman akong

makisama”

socializing with other

people.)
