Hook
What are the challenges and difficulties Lycean interns are facing right now? What are the barriers they are
experiencing which pulls them back to perform better? We, the researchers are determined to identify these
barriers such as; language barrier, cultural barrier, nonverbal communication barrier and personal barrier.
This will not only to understand how they affect the intern’s interpersonal communication skills but also to
open data for future researches on how to deal with these barriers.
Gap
According to Eugene Fibuch and Jennifer J. Robertson (2019) The essential elements of having an
adequate message is to determine that a message is 7% of the time by actual words used, tone of
voice determine the meaning 38% and the most important part, a nonverbal communication can influence
the message by 55% which is more than half is the eye contact. It is important that Interns are capable
of understanding verbal communication but also nonverbal communication. Currently, most of newly hired
employees’ communication skills are often lacking when it comes to the standard of employers. More than
60% of employers are reporting that applicants are lacking in “communication and interpersonal
communication skills” (Leggette et al., 2011 and Yale, 2014). According to Robles (2012) Before integrity,
communication skills is the second most important skill employers desire in job applicants. 75% of
employers also wants colleges to have more emphasis on developing the student’s written and verbal
This research will identify which barriers affect the capabilities of Lycean interns to communicate
adequately not only to guests, but also to co-employees and the management. We want to investigate
these factors so that we can understand where our current curriculum in school are lacking, what
improvements should be in placed and what skills interns should hone as the future employees in the
hospitality industry.

Significance of Study
The findings of this study will not only greatly benefit the competency and capabilities of LPU students, but
also will serve as a benchmark for the university to improve the current curriculum. This study will provide
information if the students in LPU are well equipped with necessary interpersonal skills to communicate
clearly and effectively. Thus, the study will uncover certain aspects in our current curriculum that may need
improvements or addition of new subjects/training that will fix the problems which Lyceum interns currently
faces such as shyness, inability to expressively communicate and impulsive behaviors. This research will
also open data for future researches on how to deal with the barriers the students are currently facing.
