This is a sample list of statements and questions that can have a predictable beneficial
outcome for a client to whom they are directed in a safe environment.
1. What is most difficult for you to talk about? I don’t want you to talk about it. Just think
about it right now.
2. What was it like for you to talk about it just now? Is it OK to talk about it?
3. What emotions are coming up inside as you talk? Fear, anger, guilt, sadness,
emptiness, low self-worth, despair, or some other feeling?
4. What is the story behind the problem you are having right now?
5. What happened?
6. What are you feeling?
7. What are you doing?
8. What are your choices now? What will you do?
9. If you had three wishes, what do you wish had been different about the family you
grew up in?
10. It’s understandable you would not be ready to change yet. Many years have gone
by doing the things and thinking the ways you have.
11. What you have done to survive, may have worked sometimes for you in the past.
12. It makes sense you would do or feel that, considering what you have been through.
Most anyone would feel or do what you have.
13. How does it work for you now, and against you?
14. It takes courage to face the pain. Let yourself feel that right now.
15. Is it OK to feel the anger, etc.?
16. What gets in the way of talking, feeling, or doing?
17. Say a little about it.
18. Congratulations! You have taken a big step.
19. What went well?
20. What is a strength you possess?
21. Suppose you saw someone bring a dead man to life again, then you saw the
healing man alive again after being executed by his enemies, what would you think,
feel, and do? How would your life be influenced?
22. How do you identify yourself? A man or woman? A certain profession? A certain
nationality? Something else?
23. What can you say to yourself that would be helpful to you?
24. If part of you knows all about you, what would the knowing part say to you?
