Mode of action: Chlorpyrifos affects the nervous system by inhibiting the breakdown of acetylcholine (ACh), a
neurotransmitter. When insects are exposed, chlorpyrifos binds to the active site of the cholinesterase (ChE)
enzyme, which prevents breakdown of ACh in the synaptic cleft. The resulting accumulation of ACh in the synaptic
cleft causes overstimulation of the neuronal cells, which leads to neurotoxicity and eventually death. Chlorpyrifos
shares a common mechanism of toxicity with other organophosphate insecticides such as Malathion, thus,
chlorpyrifos would not be effective against organophosphate-resistant insect populations. Cypermethrin is a
composite non-systemic pyrethroid; a broad spectrum, non-cumulative insecticide; and, a fast-acting neurotoxin
with good contact and stomach action. Cypermethrin acts as a stomach and contact insecticide. Also exhibits anti-
feeding action.

Plant protection equipment: Knapsack, foot, compression knapsack, compression knapsack battery and HTP
sprayers are used.
Preparation of solution: Add slowly the required quantitity to water and stir well with a stick or rod. While
preparing large quantitity of spray solution, add solution to a bucket half-filled with water, stir and empty this
prepared solution into bulk of water.
Phytotoxicity: The product is not toxic when used in field as per recommedation.
Precautions: Follow normal precautions – keep away from food stuff containers and animal food; avoid contact
with mouth, eyes and skin; avoid inhalation of the spray mist; spray in the direction of wind; wash thoroughly the
contaminated cloths and parts of body after spraying; do not smoke, drink, eat or chew while mixing and spraying;
and wear full protective clothing while mixing and spraying.
First aid: Gastric lavage with 5% sodium bicarbonate may be given if swallowed. Wash contaminated skin and
irrigate eyes with normal saline.
Antidote: Atropine sulphate 2-4 mg intravenously at 5-10 mins interval for hours together. 1-2 mg 2PAM
intravenously very slowly for 10-15 mins in 10 ml distilled water.
