AIR :-

The company is deeply passionate about maintaining a clean and

green environment in and around its plants. It follows a procedure of
total productive maintenance (TPM) for the prevention of air pollution.
Every aspect of pollution generated due to plant activities is monitored in detail and adequate
steps are taken to minimise it. The company has installed state-of-the-art pollution control
devices suitable for the purpose of reducing atmospheric pollution. Real time check on
performance of these devices is done through automated online analysers such as opacity
meters and ambient air quality monitoring stations (AAQMS).

Some of the air pollution measures (unit wise) adopted are:

 Direct reduced iron (DRI) kilns- The dust settling chambers and electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) have been
installed to control process emissions. Fugitive dust is controlled through multiple point suction hoods attached to
bag filters. Dry fog dust suppression system is provided at required places.

 Power plant- The flue gas from boilers is passed through ESP's where particulates are separated.

 Coke oven plant- Waste gases are burnt completely and the heat generated is used in waste heat recovery
boilers (WHRB) for power generation.

 Sinter plant- A centralised de-dusting system with an electrostatic precipitator is installed for dust control in the
raw material handling area. Additionally high capacity ESP also exists to control process emissions.

 Blast furnaces- The gases are cleaned through cyclone and two-stage venturi scrubber (Gas Cleaning Plant).
Pulse jet and invertible bag filters have been installed to control emission from the stock house and cast house
.
 Submerged arc furnace (SAF)- The emission from the furnace is drawn in to high capacity dust extraction
system, where particulates are trapped and treated gas is passed through chimney.

 Steel melting shop (electric arc furnace and ladle furnace)- The gases are sucked through the fume extraction
system and taken to after combustion chamber for converting CO to CO2. Thereafter, the gases are passed
through a cooling system, forced draft cooler, spark arrester to control coarse dust and subsequently through
high efficiency bag filters to separate particulates.

 Other fugitive emissions- The fugitive emissions caused through non-process activities such as haul roads and
stock yards are managed through good housekeeping practices and regular dust suppression through fixed and
mobile sprinklers.

Ambient Air Quality :-

Online continuous ambient air quality stations (CAAQS) have been installed across all the units of to monitor the
ambient air quality. The real time data collected is linked to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and
respective state pollution control boards.
WATER MANAGEMENT :-

Water pollution is controlled by adopting a range of stringent

regulatory measures and monitoring processes. Rainwater
harvesting structures have been constructed for ground water
recharge in consultation with the water resource department across
all units of the company.

Some of the measures, which have been implemented for effective control of water
pollution are:-

 Coke oven quenching- The waste water generated during quenching is taken to settling tanks. After settling, the
water is reused for quenching the hot coke.

 Sinter plant- Use of blow-down water is used in sinter nodulising.

 Blast furnace- Dust laden waste water is treated in effluent treatment plants and the treated water is recycled
back to the process to scrub blast furnace gas.

 Steel melting shop (SMS)- The waste water is taken to a settling tank and the outlet water of the tank is reused.
The blow-down water is used in slag granulation.

 Rolling mill- Process waste water is skimmed for oil and scale and then recycled back to the plant. No
wastewater is discharged.

 Direct reduced iron (DRI)- Cooling close-circuit effluent-recycling system has been installed. Waste water from
the cooling section is taken to a hot water well and then to the cooling tower and the cold water well, from where
it is recycled back into the process.

 Power plant- DM plant wastewater is treated in the neutralization pit. After treatment, the water is reused for wet
ash handling system.

 Submerged arc furnace (SAF)- Waste water is reused for slag cooling and dust suppression.

 Sewage treatment plants (STP)- Sewage treatment plants have been installed across all the units. The treated
water is 100% reused for horticulture and green cover.

 Garage, DG set and compressor houses- Oil separators have been provided. Clean water is further treated in the
STP.
Rainwater harvesting
Rainwater harvesting structures have been constructed for ground water recharge in consultation with the water
resource department across all units. Also, the surplus rainwater collected in the open pits is used as make up
water during operations of the plant.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT :-

The company pursues the policy of three R’s- Recycle, Reduce and
Reuse- for managing its waste.

I. Industrial Solid Waste:-

The company pursues the policy of three R’s -- Recycle, Reduce and Reuse – for managing its waste. Many
projects have been implemented for solid waste utilisation.

Some of the plans undertaken for effective solid waste management are:

 Power generation from coal rejects fines and middling in AFBC boilers.

 Slag generated from blast furnace is 100% reused in cement manufacturing and brick making.

 Tailor made sinter plant to utilise 100% mill scale and flue dust generated in mills and blast furnace.

 SMS slag after granulation is used for road making.

 Fly ash generated is used for brick manufacturing and cement manufacturing.

II. Ash utilisation:-

A captive brick plant has been established to produce around 4.0 lakh brick products/day for manufacturing of fly
ash bricks. All construction activities of the company are done through these fly ash bricks. Measures have already
been taken to achieve a level of 100% utilisation of fly ash. The ash is partly used for brick making, ash dyke rising,
road and embankment construction, cement manufacturing.

its-kind plant in the entire Chhattisgarh.

 The vermi-compost plant allows conversion of organic waste to manure by using earthworms. The resultant
manure is used for the purpose of gardening.

 Paper recycling unit has also been installed by at Angul plant.

BIODIVERSITY AND AFFORESTATION :-

Tree plantation is integral to the environment management plan of

the company
Maintenance of ecological balance and a perfect environment has been of utmost importance
The company undertakes afforestation programmes covering vast tracts of land in and around
its projects. Afforestation programme for project, township, green-belt and other sites are
designed according to the geographical features. Species are selected on the basis of their
adaptability and local species. Afforestation not only contributes to the aesthetics but also go
a long way in serving as ‘sinks’ for the pollutant emission of the power plant. At times, they
even combat pollution from other industries in the surrounding area.

 Large-scale bio-diversified afforestation and horticulture activities have been implemented. Massive tree
plantation drives have been undertaken.

 A botanical garden named Sanjeeveni botanical park has been established where rare plants, foliage, cactus and
herbal plants are collected.

GREEN STEEL

Environment management has been a priority area for JSPL. We have been treading the difficult path of maintain
our profitability without compromising on our efforts to reduce environmental impact. Through our innovations we
have proved that environmental conservation and profitability is not an oxymoron if we apply innovation. The case
study presented below proves the same.

Background

Direct-reduced iron (DRI), more commonly known as sponge iron, is produced from direct reduction of iron (in the
form of lump, pellets or fines) by reducing gases produced from natural gas or coal. This reduction takes place at
the temperature range 800- 1050C when reducing gases (primarily Hydrogen and Carbon-monoxide) react with
the iron oxides to produce iron. The degree of metallization, defined as the extent of conversion of iron oxide into
metallic iron, is 92-96% in a typical DRI process. This high percentage of metallization makes DRI a highly suitable
input for steel making. The specific investment and operating costs of DRI plants are low compared to integrated
steel plants and are more suitable for many developing countries where supplies of coking coal are limited. This
holds true for India where most of the coking coal has to be imported.

Challenge
Natural Gas based DRI is highly efficient techniques of manufacturing sponge iron that has lower environmental
impact. However, the challenge in this manufacturing technique is the availability of natural gas. At JSPL’s Angul
site, the DRI-BF- Electric Arc Furnace route has been adopted for manufacturing steel. To overcome the challenge
of non-availability of natural gas Coal to gas plant was set up. It uses high ash coal, available in the vicinity of the
site, and converts it into Synthetic Gas or SynGas. It is the first plant of its kind in India and only the 2nd in the
world.

Our Solution

At Angul, the Syngas, produced through the gasification process, contains methane, carbon monoxide, carbon
dioxide, hydrogen and water vapour from coal, water and air. This process has lower impact on environment as
compared to coal combustion process. During the gasification process, the carbon-dioxide emitted in the process
is entirely absorbed back into the process and the hydrogen sulphide produced is entirely used for sulphur
production.
Capital expenditure of setting up of the Syngas plant was high and had a gestation period of three years. However,
this high investment is offset by the improved energy efficiency of the system, as compared to the conventional
model of producing steel, and reduced environment impact in the long run. Another added advantage which we
able to explore was the utilization of waste. All seven by-products of the Syngas plant are recycled through internal
use or sold to external parties. This ensures health and safety of employees as well as local communities and
environmental protection.
