My Professional Development Plan 2

Abstract

This paper captures my plan for professional development over the next five years. It is a

reflection of my teaching career and the necessary steps I need to take for professional growth.

Creating this plan covers steps that will increase not only professionalism but experience as well

in the classroom. My PDQP and artifacts are also discussed and reviewed for Domain F of my

eportfolio.

Rational For My 5 Year Professional Plan

As I continue to create my Professional Development Quest Portfolio (PDQP), I realize

the need for reflection as well as personal vision for my career in teaching. The above chart

illustrates my plans in the next five years for my professional teaching career. This year I plan to

pass the RICA exam so that I may apply for my preliminary teaching credential with the CTC. I

will also obtain my Masters Degree upon the completion of this course which is something that

has been a major goal in my life. I honestly think this has been the most mentally and physically

challenging process that I have endured and will soon accomplish. I have been actively applying

for teacher positions this past month as positions are open for potential schools in the San Juan

Unified and Sacramento City Unified School Districts. As long as I am actively looking and

completing required documents and tests, I am confident I will be hired for the fall. Providing

this paper on my PDQP will not only enhance my vision, but it will also highlight key

professional goals where potential employers can see my vision. “It is important to note that as a

teacher candidate, the purpose of your portfolio evolves as you develop as a teacher and as your

audience changes from prospective college, to academic department, to prospective employer.”

(Costantino & De Lorenzo, 2009, p. 43) I am aware that the induction program BTSA is

something that I really want to start this fall for the 2019-2020 school year. This program

prepares me with an onsite-teacher mentor reviewing lesson plans and observations so I may

complete the California credential teaching program.

My Professional Development Plan 5

Having been a substitute teacher in the Sacramento City Unified School District for the

past four years, I am aware of the commitment outside the classroom as a professional teacher.

Having been a long-term substitute, I have participated and attended many seminars and staff

meetings that engage and update teachers in proper training. This is important because schools

can change their learning programs, techniques, resulting in a change of the school culture. I

realize the importance in collaborating with other faculty members, to not only receive positive

feedback but to engage in unit lessons that cater to all grades in lesson development as well. For

the next five years, I plan to not only participate but to also share feedback and direction while

helping assist the schools culture and community thrive in excellence. This will encourage the

student body and foster collaboration for shared responsibility in building healthy school culture.

I am planning to get hired but as a backup plan I do have my substitute permit so I can continue

substituting and searching for potential classrooms to teach in. In three years I plan to obtain

my single subject credential in Spanish. Currently, with my multiple subjects credential and a

BA in Spanish, my credential will let me teach Spanish to students up to the 8th grade. I would

like to potentially teach Spanish in high school and even college. I am fully bilingual and will

need to take the CSET in Spanish and one course in order to attain that credential.

In conclusion, this five year plan is a solid outline for me to finally have my own

classroom. I am working at honing my skills in on a management system that caters to all

individuals in the classroom. I have the readiness and willingness to start making an impact not

only in my life but in the school community. I am committed to being engaged and continuing

my growth as a teacher throughout the next five years. Students are not the only ones who

develop in the classroom; teachers are constantly learning and developing professionally every

single day.

Reflection of Domain F and Artifacts

As a student candidate on the brink of obtaining my credential and masters degree in

education, I realize the need for continued development when it comes to professional growth.

Domain F: Developing as a Professional Educator entails teacher candidates self-reflect on their

own teaching practices and collaborate with their staff members by soliciting feedback through

staff meetings and seminars. Professional growth is constant and means being vulnerable in

sharing ones thoughts, practices, and ideas which can really help an individual grow, especially

within a school community. For the first artifact in domain F, I uploaded a PowerPoint

presentation of a schools culture. I believe in any school climate and culture it is important to

not only be healthy and diverse but also be a good fit. I have worked with under-privileged

students throughout my teaching career both in Central America (Costa Rica) and California. I

want to make an impact not only for my students but also for my professional career. My second

artifact is my vision for the next five years. Lastly, my third artifact is a literature review on an

interesting article titled Supporting Lifetime Professional Growth Through Lifetime Professional

Literacy. This peer review shows and captures school dynamics the past 20 years in how

professional literature is helping create systems in school to enhance not only student

engagement but professional growth in teachers. From staff meetings to seminars, all teachers

should be reading in their free time and in the classroom.

Overall, Domain F envisions steps I will take professionally as I continue learning and

growing with each step I take. I do have a unique opportunity to teach at Shriners Hospital in

Sacramento, CA this summer. I will teach two sessions of patients who are recovering while

they stay and heal at Shiners. My PDQP will consist of a variety of artifacts to showcase my

strengths and experiences. Domain F I believe will constantly be updated to coincide with my

experiences as I embark on my journey as a professional teacher.
