Classification of Matter

Warm Up 8-23
1. A substance has a mass of 43.003g and a volume of 64.0mL. What is
its density? CHECK YOUR SIG FIGS!

2. A sample has a density of 343g/mL. What is its density if you cut

the sample in half?

3. An 1,300g object has a density of 16.45g/mL, what is its volume?

Classification of Matter
Classification of Matter

• Atom: ‘smallest’ basic unit of matter

• Molecule: two or more atoms

held together by chemical bonds

• Compound: A molecule with at least

2 different elements

• Ion: atom, molecule or compound that

has a charge (+ or -)
Examples: Atoms, Molecules, Compounds or Ions

Fe Cl- 2Na

I2 2H2O NO3-

Matter
Matter is anything that has both mass and volume

Substance
2 Types of Matter
1) pure substance, which has only 1 type of particle

2) mixture, which is multiple types of particles

Element Compound
2 Types of Pure Substances

1) Element – only 1 type of atom,

cannot be broken down into simpler
substance

(anything you would find on the

Periodic Table of Elements)

2) Compound – composed of more

than 2 or more types of atoms
Forms of Elements
• Monatomic - element exists as a single atom

• Diatomic - element exists in pairs

• Polyatomic – element exists in multiples more than 2

Forms of Elements
Remember that these are molecules because they have more than 1 atom

…but they are NOT compounds because they do not have 2 or more
different types of atoms

2 Types of Mixtures
1) Homogenous – Evenly
distributed substances,
they look the same all the
way through

2) Heterogeneous –
Unevenly distributed
substance, you can see the
different components
Homogenous vs. Heterogeneous
Homogeneous Heterogeneous
