CONVENTION BRIEF XX Annual NOSPlan Convention

REFLECTION OF THE CITY

It’s a pleasure of Institute of Architecture and Planning, Nirma University to present the
Theme of Twentieth Annual NOSPlan Convention- XXNOSPlan 2018 as Reflection of the
City and the name of the convention as “Pratibimb” which signifies Reflection.

Newton in the year 1687 stated in his third law, every action has an equal and opposite reaction,
and it’s also true for our cities. Cities that we live in are an impervious reflection of how we have
nurtured it and how we have helped the city grow. A city clearly reflects to the image people
want to create. A city gives it’s individual an identity and identities in turn reflect the city’s
nature. The name of the event transparently casts the ideology of the projection created by
the city through spaces it utilizes, the heritage, traditions and socio-cultural norms it upholds,
archaeological and religious values it carries and the direction in which the people are taking it
towards. Inclusive Planning for better cities of tomorrow can only come after a thorough and
unbiased examination of the reflection of the city of today.

In modern day Planning practices we often come across a selection process wherein planners
often impart an image to a city, it also plays a very important role in the entire plan making pro-
cess both in terms of physical planning and social planning. Our motive of selecting this theme
was to inculcate a regime within fellow planner to understand every fabric of the city before
initiating the entire plan making process that would include all aspects spaces, socio-cultural
norms, study existing and past situation thoroughly and a very participatory planning process.

CONCEPT OF LOGO
The vertical built fabric represent the various densities that are spread throughout the city
over a period of time and reflects the growth of the city. The building footprint represents the
horizontal development.

The green space enclosed represents the openness within the city and its amalgamation with the
urban fabric. The green represents the sensitivity towards the urban open spaces with an idea
to conserve and preserve the ecology and environment.

URBAN JOURNALISM
“Sometimes reality is too complex, stories give it a form.”
Cities are the main drivers of economy and at the same time, sources of creativity. By 2050,
almost 70% of the world population will live in urban areas. These transformations give way to
all kinds of problems, such as the rise of urban slums, environmental and climate issues, or new
threats on human rights and democracy. In a time when urban transformations are occurring
at a rapid scale, sharing the stories of our cities become powerful tools to address urban issues.

CURRENT PRACTICES
“A best practice is a method or technique that has been generally accepted as superior to any alternatives
because it produces results that are superior to those achieved by other means or because it has become a
standard way of doing things, e.g., a standard way of complying with legal or ethical requirements”.

THEME: Innovative governance practices- Glocalization

As we are pulled into the future more and more rapidly, our world is shrinking with each pass-
ing day. Just as one example of the many different problems associated with this, technology is
being developed faster than societies are able to keep up with. Nevertheless, our lives just keep
going on wherever we may be. This means that every responsible person on the planet must
now not only become a global citizen but a glocal one, if we are to stand any chance of making
it collectively as a species.”

“Glocal” simply means having considerations both at local and global levels. So, glocal gover-
nance is the idea that we need to have government officials in every Panchayat at the bottom
all the way up to the United Nations. Glocalization includes three Public participation, Actual
Glocalization, Governance.

Glocalization is absolutely essential to the future of governance. After all, societies have both
particularizing and universalizing tendencies, so there needs to be both local and global consti-
tutions that can suit the needs of people specifically as well as in general.
From an economic point of view, glocalization is about integrating local markets with global
ones. This requires the adaptation of local culture and products within international market.
