"As you can not separate the child from his mother's arms, so you can not untie

the
prayer of the man who understands her own heart." (Saint Paisie Aghioritul)

About prayer

Prayer is for the soul what is breathing for the body. In prayer, the soul
breathes the Holy Spirit, feeds on God, speaks to and listens to it, acquires the
spiritual liberty and the feeling of eternity for which it was created. Prayer means
to stand before the Face of the Living God, thus gaining safety, comfort, untold
love and gentleness. Through prayer, man reaches the fulfillment of his meaning,
which is revealed in the natural relationship between him and God. Without
prayer, life is sad, oppressive, tumultuous, restless, and man lives in darkness
and in soul death, and it will become, after death of the body, death and eternal
torment.
Prayer is the voice of the man who seeks God, finds Him and wants to know and
live in His love. Only when our lives are founded on the Word of God we come to
know the One who gave us our life through prayer.
If today's world faces more and more worries, more stress and agitation,
both inward and outward, it is because it has removed God from his life, both
from society and from the soul. God no longer finds a place in the heart of man,
and he desperately seeks new solutions and alternative therapies for keeping
balance and inner peace. But peace will not be, for true peace is from God. "My
peace I give to you, not as the world gives you I give you" (John 14, 27), says
Christ the Lord. His peace is the living of God's presence, his healing and giving
power in all the afflictions of life, is the rest of the soul in God, his Creator.
Prayer strengthens faith, and also through it we gain peace and inner unity,
finding the equilibrium and harmony so coveted by man of our day, knowing that
everything is ordained by God. Prayer teaches us to think as God thinks and to
enter into His life, to live His life by offering ours through the fulfillment of His
commandments.
How can we have the certainty that God is listening to our prayer? A secular tree,
reaching the highest heights, can not be sustained unless it has deep roots in the
ground. So with us: humble-thinking and repentance trust us before God. The
more we stand in them, the clearer the heart becomes, the more sensible and the
clearest the presence and work of God in the world and in our lives. The deeper
we become in the conscience of our nothingness and in our self-condemning, the
higher our God raises. Prayer is received by God when we forgive those who are
wrong. Moreover, if we pray for those who do not love us, we prove that we are
the sons of God after grace and, as Father Paisie Olaru said, we see the door of
Heaven open to us.
In conclusion, prayer is a living and personal relationship with God, this
also implies prayer in common, in the church, where all believers pray in the
spirit of God. Orthodoxy lives in communion because we are made in the image
of God, the pattern of eternal communion of love between the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit.
