5Bass Guitar
Bass guitar is probably the most underrated and underrespected
instruments out there. And it's also one of the best sounding!
Electric guitarists get all the fame because they make it look
easy but the fact is it IS easy (compared to bass or acoustic).
Bass players on the other hand, deserve far more respect than
they get. If you disagree that bassists get disrespected just go to

Poor John Deacon is so underrated and really, all of them are,

but he is my favorite. If I had to play an instrument, this would be

11Flute The flute is a family of

musical instruments in the woodwind group. Unlike woodwind
instruments with reeds, a flute is an aerophone or reedless wind
instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an
opening.

Flute definitely deserves to be on this list because it is the

hardest of the woodwind instruments to master. 60% of a flute
players air doesn't even make it into the instrument. If you have
ever made a noise by blowing across a beer bottle... It is way
harder. I play this instrument in a symphony setting and get paid
more than most of the other instrumentalists.

I play the flute in my sixth grade band its not even hard to play
you just have to memorize the fingerings and you need to have
good fast air in order to play like a professional flutist.

When played properly it is able to convey so much. Low notes are

full and beautiful, like a river. High notes are clear and
crystalline. It's able to be pretty, jazzy, slow and soulful, quick
and impressive. It moulds so well with andcan be very
complimentary towards other instruments (and with vocals), but
also due to its impressive higher register it can stand out from
other instruments :) (maybe I'm biased because I play the flute
lol)

I would put the flute over any woodwind instruments. It is

definitely the hardest woodwind instrument to play. It doesn't
have a reed which makes it harder to play because it requires
more air, not to mention the fingerings. But once you've
mastered the flute, it is an amazing instrument to play.

are fun to play and are used is so many genres. I love the guitar

I respect all instruments and musicians because it takes skill to

(Yes I know ELP is my favorite band, and they didn't have guitar. )

The synth is the future of music. It represents the untapped
potential of the imagination. A good analogue synth is not used
as an emulation of other instruments, but rather as a means to
creat never before heard sounds. It can be used as the lead,
backup, and vocals of a song. At the same time. A true symbol of
human ingenuity.

Not a big fan of synthesizers, especially when they're used as the

lead instrument. They were originally used to harmonize with the
lead instruments to produce nice harmonies and add something
extra to make the music sound more complete. Then around the
80s, bands decided "Hey, let's take this background instrument
and make it a lead instrument while taking the old lead
instruments and either pushing them to the back or getting rid of
them altogether." Synthesizers killed music by replacing musical

You actually have to 'Create Your Own Sounds' to make the most
outta a Synth.

The synthesizer is the ONLY instrument where YOU get to create

the sound it produces. Guitars, Drums, Pianos, and every other
single instrument all sound relatively similar in some regards. For

years because, evokes more emotion from its listeners, takes
such a dedication to practice and tuning to play well with its

environmental factors, has such a unique, intense and beautiful
sound, is mentioned several times in the Bible, was played solo
on the front lines at war time and the Spartans used several in
band form in battle, still widely played today with competitions
throughout the world for both young and old and players are
increasing, etc.. I played jazz trumpet through college, greatly
admire the influence and diversity of guitar and piano, and highly
respect all instruments. However, no other has these many
unique qualities, history and overall impact on society while still
being played by young and old. Bagpipes #1.

I quit playing guitar because it's boring and every pimple faced
high school freshman plays "in a band" I took on bagpipe and it is
the most wonderful instrument ever! It takes heart, dedication,
practice, patience, persistence, maturity, and more. To the fellow
who commented "who really plays bagpipes? " Thousands of
talented people play world wide, there is even competitions and
different grades of players. Bagpipes are an ancient instrument
that have seen its share of war and peace time, competition and
just playing for self fulfillment and enjoyment. I find it a bit
disheartening to see the celestial bagpipe ranked below the
cereal box instrument know as the ukulele.

I was at a wedding once and at the reception an attractive

thirtysomething woman was playing the harp. I was very drunk
and stood about five yards away from her, mesmerized, The next

woman harp player got up and broke up the fight. I love the harp.

Nobody ever gives the trombone any credit but it is without a
doubt the best instrument. It has a sound like no other as it is
the closest sound to the human voice except at least I think
better than any vocalist out there. The trombone is just as
versatile as any instrument on this list and also makes sound no
other brass instrument can recreate because of the slide. I can
make my trombone sound like a trumpet, I can make it sound like
a tuba, I can make it sound like a French horn, but god damn
nothing can sound like a trombone.

AMAZING!

BEST INSTRUMENT EVER! It has mellow tones, not squeaky like

violins, and not too low like a cello or bass. It's perfect because
it's right in the middle. Plus, violas have the prettiest harmonies
EVER! This instrument really does NOT get enough credit at all.

Very nice deep sound and the instrument does not get enough
credit for being in music. The viola is used in almost every pop
song that features any stringed orchestral instruments.

Most of the people would say the best 3 musical instruments is
the Piano, Violin & Guitar. But for me I disagree for this. Because
I feel this is unfairly. Due to our world had many types genre of
music such as classical, jazz, rock & pop. In here I would using
Classical & Jazz(include popular music) to describe which is the
best 3 musical instruments in classical & jazz. Due to some of
musical instruments are good in Jazz some are good in classical
way. In classical music the top 3 musical instruments is the pipe
organ, violin & classical guitar. And the Jazz music would be the
Piano, Soprano Saxophone & Archtop Guitar(Jazz Guitar).

By far the Pipe Organ is really the best musical instrument in the
classical music. I have listen both musical instruments(Organ &
Piano) performs in classical music I found out the Organ richer &
glorify sound that the Piano is can't be conquer. So I think the
Piano is more suitable for modern music not for classical.

It's the COOLEST

By far the organ. You can get every sound you can think of out of
a pipe organ, and it has the power to make you laugh, jump for
joy, cry, warm your heart, and make you want to dance. In a band
you need multiple instruments, same with an orchestra, but an
organ can be alone to play the most majestic music a person can
hear. The pipe organ by far.

Lets be fair, the organ is the Morgan Freeman of instruments. It is

overwhelmingly powerful when played right, and makes you
know it as well. What any instrument can play, the pipe organ
can do it better, and can even give the silliest songs an epic
sense.

doesn't take the accordion seriously. That is changing but, in the

Serbian folk music. So please people, understand that the
accordion is just like any other instrument and stop hating it.

The French horn is the best because of many reasons... It is the
connector between woodwind and brass, it looks cool, it's the
longest, it has the best tone, etc. Also, for all you woodwind
players that think that nobody uses the horn, look up John

This is the best intrument in a band. No doubt.

The French horn is THE BEST instrument ever! It has a rich,

mellow sound, and a golden tone that brightens the sound of the
band. It is not rich and dark like other bass instruments; rather, it
has a rich, bright sound that blends with bands and, if played
well, does nice solos. Sure, other instruments can switch notes
quicker, and the woodwinds sound really exotic, but the Horn has
an unreal, inverted tone that sounds magical. No wonder it plays
the theme of Harry Potter! Its tone is rich, yet very clear,
especially in the higher register. It has a unique, rich sound, with
a delicate feel, making it good for harmonies. It blends well with
woodwinds and brass alike, making it quite compatible. Baritone
and Sax can mimic its sound a bit, but will never match the
Horn's pure, friendly tone. The French Horn is by far the best
instrument.

The tuba affords the big fat male nerd an opportunity to be part
of something special in high school. Without the tuba, many big

The Tuba is just as capable as any other brass instrument, even

if it is large, heavy, or cumbersome. This being said, I believe it
has a beautiful unique sound that resonates with everyone's
hearts; literally, as it can mean the world's difference in a
concert hall, as to whether or not the bass line is ever heard
above much louder instruments. Tubas are not easy to play, for it
takes skill, as all instruments do, to be able to produce several
octaves' worth of notes with three or more buttons and the
human soul.

A beautiful instrument that is popular enough that everyone
knows what it is (Because of Legend of Zelda) but rare enough
that barely anyone can play it well, increasing the joy in playing
this instrument. In addition, because of its unique shape, it is the
only instrument (other than the glass harp) that produces a pure
tone. This means that the sound of this instrument is free of
overtones, and even if overtones are present, they are far higher
and quieter than the fundamental, giving it a unique, and by

In my opinion, the upright bass is the most fun, most classy,
most challenging, and best sounding instrument of all time. The
lack of frets creates a a rich, deep sound that cannot be
matched by any other instrument, and it can be used in any
genre of music. One can replace a bass guitar for an upright bass
with a pickup in a rock or heavy setting, but it is much harder for
an electric bass to fit in to a classical or jazz setting.

A very awesome sounding instrument! Not to mention it has

definitely one of the most underrated but amazing instruments
ever made!

The Stand up bass can be and where from dark and powerful to
soft and beautiful. When you play you can't help to be content.
People always forget about it because tradition places it in a
beat keeper role.

Sounds deep and rich, gives you satisfaction when you play. I like
cavantina on double bass.

divine and holy and surely everybody will agree with me once
they have listened to sitar being played

35Double Bass
There are so many things to like about double bass, and it is
without question my favorite instrument to study and play. It's so
different from violin, viola and cello despite looking similar; it
requires much more shifting due to its size, it is tuned in fourths
rather than fifths (probably for easier shifting), and gets
exclusive access to a special overhand "German" style bow. The
double bass is so unique in fact that it is actually related less to
the violin family and more to the viola the gamba family which
died off in the baroque era. For those concerned that bass may
be "too simple" for them, I would encourage them to study bass
thumb position (the register above the shoulders to the bridge
uses the thumb) and listen to some of the master solo works
from the likes of Giovanni Botessini and Sergei Koussevitzky,
works that take advantage of the instrument's entire register.I

the rest of my life, and I wouldn't want ...more

There is something wrong with the fact that my favorite

instrument of all time is number 33. I've played every other string
instrument plus guitar and ukulele and none other has taken me
like this bass has. Of course, I owe a special thanks to amazing
Hunter Allen. He made my bass career full out.
I have played the double bass for six years in a Orchestra and it
is beautiful. Most of the time it under appreciated since we
almost never get solos, but nothing beets the unique deep sound
(or the arm work out).

The bass is my life, period. I would not be the person I am

without. So, vote for what you want but, keep this in mind. The
bass has changed a life.

36Balalaika
The Balalaika is the best instrument ever in my opinion! So many
emotions can be expressed through just three strings. It seems
to have been given a bad name because it is a Russian
instrument. It is not seen enough in music other than Russian
folk and classical. Unfortunately, it is an unappreciated
instrument.

37Bass Clarinet
Having tried the clarinet and bass clarinet, I can say that the
bass clarinet is harder to get familiar with, especially the high
notes. However, once mastered, it allows the player to fulfill
almost any role in an ensemble, and keep a melodious tone the
whole time. The lower notes are sonorous and riveting, and the
higher notes can have the voice-like tone of a clarinet or the flair
of a clarinet used in klesmer. Also, I think the piano and cello
should be even higher on this list.

The Bass Clarinet is physically a beautiful instrument. But

nothing is as good as playing a rich mellow low note the shakes
your mouth in a very funny way. The Bass Clarinet can also play
high notes beautifully. Once mastered the bass clarjnet can play
good repertoires, orchestral excerpts, Etudes, and any other
types lf songs. Once you master it it becomes aa awesome
instrument

I think it should be in the top five along with the bass clarinet

For travel, A Plastic Soprano Recorder Is at Least As Good A
Choice As A Harmonica. Better Dynamic Flexibility And Cheaper
To Replace.

Awesome its like a flute but lighter and cheaper

It can do more than people expect

39Baritone Horn
Best instrument in band easily
The Baritone Horn is really underrated. Always overshadowed by
the trumpet and clarinet players, still has a smooth and low
sound. The only reason I think it's all the way up here is how
unknown it is.

Example:
Person A: I play the Baritone in my band, mom.
Mom: Huh? What's that?

The baritone is the most under rated instrument and know barely
know even though it is a beautiful instrument and makes almost
the exact same sound as the trombone and that well known.

Been playing it for 5 years, and is an important instrument in the

band, as well as fantastic for solos

40Triangle
There was a retarded kid in our high school band who was given
a triangle so that he could feel like he was participating in
something special. Every so often the patronizing conductor
would point at him, and that was his cue to strike the thing. He
used to smile every time he struck the thing, The happiness that
goofy little kid experienced was something that truly touched
me.

I love the triangle... One of the few instruments I can play other
than the piano. It's really funny when you hear someone play it
really good even though it's like a really easy instrument.

Damn this is the hardest instrument ever to play. It challenges

your brain and takes a tremendous amount of skillz. I mean these
guys are other than football players and are in better shape then
Weight Lifters! GO TRIANGLES! - God_Potato

One of the divine instrument. critical to play but good at color

variations and useful in the church.

I play it even though I get bullied because I play so much
instruments. But Bluegrass is a true good one! I should say if the
banjo was an orchestra stringed instrument, the banjo would be
the cello.

Banjos have some of the most potential an instrument can

possess only second to guitar. They originated in the appalachian
mountains and are incredible. Sadly, they have gone down in
popularity due to a negative stigma against appalachians.
Nowadays only old folks can play them (well). It is making a
comeback due to Mumford and sons but locals still haven't
embraced it again. Please come back banjo.

43Mandolin
The Mandolin is very cool. If you like the violin, the guitar, the
bass and the lute, then you will 100% like the mandolin. It is
lightweight, fun, and just listening to it will give you goosebumps
of being in the middle ages fighting in a huge war between good
and evil. What more could you ask for, I mean Triangle?
Seriously?

Very fun to play and relatively easy to learn, plus you can get a
sweet beginner's instrument for a song. From old timey tunes to
Bach, this instrument is great for either solo or backup. Plus
there are actually mandolin orchestras out there. Seriously! The
group I played in performs the Christmas portion of Handel's
Messiah every year at Christmastime. And talk about portable! I
used to practice mine every day during the commute to/from
work. On the ferry. One time a guitarist sat across from me and
we jammed the entire way home. Need I say more?

A band without a tambourine is like Christmas without presents.
Women look extremely sexy playing them, and the sound they
make is heavenly. I think that the tambourine is a blessing from
some higher power, placed on Earth so that we mortals can
experience joy, and celebrate life,

I have a best friend who plays a cornet and she loves it. It does
not require much effort but it makes a wonderful loud sound.

Basically a trumpet and ultra hard to learn, sounds like a foghorn

I love the sound they make.

I have only ever met 1 person in my life who plays bongo drums
and is actually good at it. I think this instrument is hard because
I couldn't keep a beat to save me life

Easy to play it is a instrument if you cannot get a hang of the

drums you play the bongo's all you have to to is hit it with your
nuckels and palm and job dune

Easy to leard but sure hard to master.

I play Erhu and violin, why this far down I don't know. Erhu is
hands down the best instrument, however not many people play
it.

Damn this is far down the list. I was beginning to think I was
going to have to add it myself.

Great instrument. Soft and mournful tone, beautiful.

I like all dulcimers they make a beautiful sound and can play old
and new songs. YOU can play them in a band or alone. Their cool
and are tough too so you will get a challenge and its original too
so people will think its cool that you play these things
