2. Mounting

2.1 Mounting the IPC FEC-Standard

The IPC FEC-Standard can be mounted on the top-hat rail as

well as directly to the wall by means of two fixing screws.

Combined mounting using both mounting types is also poss-

ible.

Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh 2-3

2. Mounting

2.2 Top-hat rail mounting

The IPC FEC-Standard is suitable for mounting on a top-hat

rail (support rail conforming to EN 50022). To this purpose
the rear of the IPC FEC-Standard has two fixed anchored
top-hat rail clamps with which the IPC FEC-Standard can be
snapped in onto the top-hat rail.

2.2.1 Procedure for top-hat rail mounting

Caution
Do not use additional aids to fasten the IPC FEC-Standard
on the top-hat rail.

1. Incline the IPC FEC-Standard by approx. 85 (see Fig. 2/1)

and lean the IPC FEC-Standard against the rear wall
above the top-hat rail.

2. Now slide the IPC FEC-Standard downwards until the

top-hat rail clamps of the IPC FEC-Standard contacts the
top-hat rail.

3. Then press the lower half of the IPC FEC-Standard

against the top-hat rail. The ball of the thumb is suitable
for latching the IPC FEC-Standard on to the top-hat rail
gently. (see Fig. 2/2).

2.2.2 Procedure for top-hat rail dismantling

Caution
Never remove an IPC FEC-Standard from the top-hat rail
while it is wired. All cable connections must have been
removed before the IPC FEC-Standard is removed.

Caution
Avoid using screwdrivers or other levering tools to
separate the IPC FEC-Standard from the top-hat rail. If you
avoid using auxiliary tools, unwanted vibrations or even
damage to the wall and the IPC FEC-Standard is avoided.

1. Clasp around the enclosure of the IPC FEC-Standard by

placing the thumbs of your hand on the lower end and
the other fingers of the same hand on the upper end of
the IPC FEC-Standard.

2. Lever the IPC FEC-Standard from the top-hat rail by

pulling the lower end of the IPC FEC-Standard towards
yourself while exercising moderate pressure with your
thumbs. A clear latching sound then indicates that the
device has been unlatched and can thus be removed
from the top-hat rail.

2-6 Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh

2. Mounting

2.3 Wall mounting

The IPC FEC-Standard is suitable for mounting to a wall. To

this purpose there are fixed integrated fixing brackets on
both ends of the IPC FEC-Standard.

Observe the distances of the holes which have to be set at the

respective IPC FEC types. The required screw diameter
amounts to 4.0 mm. The screw head diameter should not
amount to more than 8.5 mm.

IPC FEC-type hole distance

IPC FEC FC400 114,2 mm

IPC FEC FC440 114,2 mm

IPC FEC FC520 135,7 mm

with one hand in order to prevent it from falling .

2-8 Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh

2. Mounting

2.4 Combined mounting

The IPC FEC-Standard is suitable for combined mounting

(wall/top-hat rail).

2.4.1 Procedure for combined mounting

1. Observe the points described under Section 2.3 with

regard to the hole distance and the screw type.
Ensure additionally that the two holes are set so that
they can be accessed for mounting through the
oblong holes positioned in the top-hat rail.

2. When you have prepared fixing by wall mounting, the

module can be set on the top-hat rail as described
under Section 2.2.

3. Align the IPC FEC-Standard on the top-hat rail so that

the wall holes correspond with the side fixing brackets
of the IPC FEC-Standard.

4. Fix the IPC FEC-Standard by means of the two screws

of the screw type described under Section 2.3 through
the top-hat rail oblong holes and through the side
fixing brackets of the IPC FEC-Standard to the wall.

Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh 2-9

2. Mounting

2.4.2 Procedure for combined dismantling

Warning
Never dismantle an IPC FEC-Standard from the wall or from
the top-hat rail while it is wired. All cable connections must
have been removed before the IPC FEC-Standard is
dismantled.

Caution
Never try to remove the IPC FEC-Standard from the top-hat
rail before the wall mounting screws have been removed .

1. Use a suitable screwdriver to remove the two fixing

screws which hold the IPC FEC-Standard through the
top-hat rail to the wall by means of the fixing brackets.

2. Clasp around the enclosure of the IPC FEC-Standard by

placing the thumbs of your hand on the lower end and the
other fingers of the same hand on the upper end of the
IPC FEC-Standard.

3. Lever the IPC FEC-Standard from the top-hat rail by

pulling the lower end of the IPC FEC-Standard towards
yourself while exercising moderate pressure with your
thumbs. A clear latching sound then indicates that the
device has been unlatched and can thus be removed from
the top-hat rail.

2-10 Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh

2. Mounting

2.5 Further information on top-hat rail mounting

The IPC FEC-Standard should not be slid on the top-hat rail.

The top-hat rail clamp presses the IPC FEC-Standard so firmly
against the top-hat rail that unintentional moving of the IPC
FEC-Standard is not possible.

If the IPC FEC-Standard has to be placed at a different posi-

tion on the top-hat rail, remove the device from the top-hat
rail and place it back onto the rail at the desired position.

Moving the IPC FEC-Standard on the top-hat rail causes high

mechanical wear at the top-hat rail itself.

The correct latching-in method (as described in Section 2.2) is

only subject to a very low degree of wear and can thus be
repeated as often as required.

Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh 2-11

2. Mounting

2.6 Earthing the IPC FEC-Standard

Before the IPC FEC-Standard is commissioned it has to be

earthed. The stranded cable required to this purpose has to
have a cross-section of at least 2.5 mm2.

2.6.1 Earthing without a top-hat rail

Slide the clamp-type cable lug of the earthing cable onto one
of the two lug holders positioned on the two sides of the IPC
FEC-Standard. The other end of the earthing cable is
connected to the central star-head earthing point. This
earthing applies for an example without top-hat rail (see Fig.
2/3).

2. Mounting

Caution
It is prohibited to connect several devices via the same
earthing cable (see Fig. 2/4).

2.6.2 Prohibited earthing

The earthing shown in Fig. 2/4 is prohibited. When installing

the IPC FEC-Standard always ensure that earthing is
implemented as shown in Fig. 2/3, if the IPC FEC-Standard is
not mounted on the top-hat rail.

2. Mounting

2.6.3 Top-hat rail earthing

A further earthing alternative is to earth the top-hat rail itself.

In this case no additional connection is required between the
top-hat rail and the IPC FEC-Standard since the top-hat rail
clamp of the IPC FEC-Standard establishes a conductive
connection.

2 IPC FEC-Standard 4 Functional earthing cable
Fig. 2/5: Top-hat rail earthing

If a top-hat rail/suppor t rail is selected as the fixing alterna-

tive, it has to have an equipotential bonding to the star-head
earthing point of the control cabinet or of the feeder conduc-
tor. If the top-hat rail then becomes an equipotential bonding
strip, several IPC FEC-Standard devices may be fastened to it.
The earthing terminals in the form of lug holders (6.3 mm) are
then defined as a functional earthing and can be used to con-
tact shieldings.

2. Mounting

2.7 Important installation regulations

Only use power supply units which ensure safe separation of

the operating voltage conforming to IEC 742 / EN60742 / VDE
0551, PELV with at least 4 kV insulation resistance for the 24
V DC power supply (power connections) and for the power
supply of the digital inputs (nominal 24 V DC).

Switched-mode power supply units with safe separation con-

forming to EN 60950 / VDE 0805 are also permitted.

The power supply unit PS1 PSE3 fulfills the specified require-
ments.

The maximum length of the power supply cable amounts to

10 m.

Use exclusively shielded cables for TP and cross-over cables.

TP cables of the type S/STP (min. CAT5) are to be used. The
shieldings are to be applied to an interference-free earth at
both ends, as a large area and as low-resistance. This can be
implemented with the top-hat rail clamp which is part of the
earthing set (Part No.: 526683). The enclosure of the hubs
used also have to be earthed as low-resistance.

The maximum length of the connected cable for signal con-

nections of the digital and analog I/Os amounts to 30 m

3.4 The communication interface

COM and EXT are universal TTL connections. A level controller (e.g. SM14 or
SM15) is required for implementation.

Applications

COM Use as a programming interface or MMI

EXT Use with MMI or other RS232 devices

Please note that the SM14/15 supplies the Transmit, Receive and RTS/CTS sig-
nals.

The cable length (SM14/SM15 interface controller plus zero modem cable) may
not exceed 3 m.

3. Installation

3.4.1 Proper use of the SM14/SM15

The interface converter TTL-RS232 PS1 SM15 was conceived

for the industrial installation of serial communication. The
scope of delivery of the PS1 SM15 does not include a zero
modem cable. A corresponding cable is to be created as
shown in the figure below. The connector pin assignment of
the SM15 corresponds to that of the SM14. The specifications
of the EIA (Electronic Industrial Association) RS232-C are to
be observed when implementing a serial communication con-
nection.

A shielded cable (braided shield, 80% coverage) is required

in order to achieve a sufficient level of immunity to interfer-
ence. The shielding is to be created as a large area and as
low-resistance.

The SM14 programming cable is not to be used in the sense

of an industrial installation. The scope of delivery of the SM14
includes a zero modem cable.

3.5.3 Connection assignment of the analog inputs

The analog inputs of the IPC FEC-Standard are used to detect

analog states for example of temperature, rotational speed,
speed, pressure or other sensors.

The IPC FEC-Standard types 520, 560, 620 and 660 have 3
analog inputs available. The resolution of the inputs amount
to 12 bits. The input signal can be defined as a current (0-20
mA) or voltage (0-10 V) signal path by means of the software
operating system. Connection to a connector PS1 SAC30 is
implemented as shown below.

The two connectors PS1 SAC11 and PS1 SAC31 are not suit-
able for use in this case since the integrated LEDs can cause a
measuring error in the analog value.

Note
The analog input signal lines are to be implemented with
shielded cables. Cables with braided shielding (80% cover-
age) are suitable. The shielding is to be connected at the
module end, as a large area and as low-resistance.

3.5.4 Connection assignment of the analog outputs

The analog output of an IPC FEC-Standard is used to control

analog actuators, for example, pressure regulator, tempera-
ture controller, level controller, etc.

The FEC Standard types 520, 560, 620 and 660 have 1 analog
output. The internal resolution of the output amounts to 12
bits. The signal is a current signal (0-20 mA). The connection
to a connector PS1 SAC10 is shown below using a propor-
tional valve as an example.

Caution
Reversing of the polarity at the supply of the analog output
module has to be avoided under all circumstances. The
use of an external protection (125 mAF) of the output
module is recommended.

Note
The analog output signal lines are to be implemented with
shielded cables. Cables with braided shielding (80%

IPC FEC-Standard units which can be connected to each other
depends on the type and number of the hubs used (star
distribution). The cable length of each individual IPC FEC-
Standard which is connected to a hub may not exceed 100
meters. TP cables of the type S/STP (min. CAT 5) are to be
used. A minimum distance between each other does not have
to be observed.

Caution
Do not switch on the power supply after you have com-
pleted the wiring of the ”Power 24V DC”, but wait until the
whole installation has been completed.
Depending on the design of the power supply and the con-
nector used a contact overload may occur.
A protection of the feeder cable is to be implemented.

Note
The connections between the Connectors 1 to 5 and 6 to
10 are suitable for the power supply of the outputs or in-
puts. The maximum single contact rating amounts to 8 A at
SAC X 4 A at ZC13 8 A.

3.5.9 Options of the function selector switch

The function selector switch of the IPC FEC-Standard has 2

different functionalities.

– It can be sampled as a Run/Stop switch per software,

whereby the position 0 corresponds to the function
Stop and every other position to the function Run.

– It can be used as a trimmer. Positions 0-15 can be

sampled by an application program. Position 0 of the
function selector switch always means: The program
has been stopped. Before commissioning the switch is
to be set to Position 0 (state of delivery).

3-24 Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh

3. Installation

Fig. 3/16: Function selector switch in the initial position

Note
In order not to evaluate every intermediate position when
switching from one position to another one across several
intermediate positions, reading out of the switch is
delayed.
The value is not read out until the switch rests for approx.
2 seconds in the same position

The function selector switch as a Run/Stop switch:

In this mode a program can be assigned to each of the switch

positions 1 to 15 of the function selector switch. By default
the switch positions 1 - 15 has the meaning that the FEC or
the program of the FEC is in the state RUN (loaded program).

The switch positions can be read out by the program.

The function selector switch as a trimmer:

The function selector switch of the IPC FEC-Standard can be

used as a trimmer. In this mode a step-by-step control can be
implemented (for example in order to control the speed of a
motor).

The type of use of the function selector switch is determined

by the software. Both functionalities of the function selector
switch cannot be used simultaneously.

Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh 3-25

3. Installation

In the state of delivery the switch positions 1 to 15 of the

function selector switch are without action.

Warning
A change in the switch position of the function selector
switch during running operation can have serious conse-
quences depending on the programs which are assigned
to the switch positions.

Corresponding precautionary measures therefore already

have to be taken when programming the switches in order to
prevent accidents.

For further information on the function selector switch please

refer to the respective description on the FST or Multiprog
CD.

Before commissioning the switch is to be set to Position 0

(state of delivery).

As a Run/STOP switch the function selector switch is used to

set the plant to STOP.

By default the position 0 = STOP, the position 1 to F = RUN.

For your information:

A change in the function selector switch while a digital output

is overloaded leads to delayed recognition of the changed
position

3.6 Information on wiring the IPC FEC-Standard

Note
Separate the signal input and signal output wires in
separate cable ducts and avoid bundling the signals. Do
not use the same multiple-conductor cable to wire the
signal inputs and outputs.

Caution
Check the supply voltage and earthing connections as well
as the input/output connections before switching on the
current.

Ensure that the mounting screws or screw terminals for the

external connection are fixed. External connections may not
have any visible signs of damage.

Warning
Ensure that the supply voltage is separated from the IPC
FEC-Standard before replacing the cable or taking similar
steps.

In case of loads, such as forwards/backwards motor contac-

tors, which can be dangerous when activated simultaneously,
both interlocks outside the IPC FEC-Standard as well as pro-
grammed interlocks should exist. This prevents such loads
from being activated simultaneously.

– Do no connect any of the unused terminals.

Festo P.BE-FEC-S-SYS en 0105nh 3-27

3. Installation

Note
For EMERGENCY-OFF functions the output loads should be
switched off by a switch outside the IPC FEC-Standard
which separates the load voltage from the output ter-
minals.
If you connect an EMERGENCY OFF circuit, please ensure
that national wiring or safety regulations are observed.

The connection of a surge voltage suppresser parallel to an

inductive load reduces the generation of electrical emitted
interference.

Caution
The operating voltage of the IPC FEC-Standard is protected
against reversing of the polarity. Nevertheless, check the
polarity before commissioning.
The output power supply (supply of the outputs) may not
have the polarity reversed. External protection is recom-
mended.

4.1.8 The first project with the IPC FEC-Standard in MULTIPROG

Please proceed as follows:

1. Connect your IPC FEC-Standard to the power supply as

described above. Connect at least one sensor to Input 0 of
Group E0. Connect the power supply to the output
connector (so that you can check by means of the LEDs
whether an output switches).

2. Install MULTIPROG 2.01 Release 2001/04 (or higher) on

your programming PC if it has not been installed yet

3. Connect the control system and the PC with the

programming cable PS1 SM14. Use the connection COM
at the IPC FEC-Standard and COM1 or COM2, etc. at the
programming PC.

4. Start MULTIPROG

4.2 Display elements

The FEC has a Run LED which can light in the colors green, red
and orange. Each color indicates an operating state of the
FEC.

During starting (Power ON) the LED switches to orange.

In the following sections the states depend on the setting of

the Run/Stop switch.

If the Run/Stop switch is set to Stop (0), the LED light orange.
If the Run/Stop switch is switched to RUN (1-15) and there is
a project on the system, the project is started and the LED
lights up green. If the Run/Stop switch is set to RUN (1-15)
and there is no project on the system, there is a fault and the
LED lights up red. In the Run state the LED indicates an error
with red.

A detailed fault description is contained on the respective

programming system (FST or Multiprog) or in the documenta-
tion on the corresponding product CD.

4.3 Rapid counters

The two inputs (see table below) can be configured indepen-

dently of each other as rapid counter inputs with which the
counting pulses can be used to count up to a frequency of 2
kHz. The counters have a depth of 16 bits (0 to 65535). Inputs
which are configured as counters can still be read simulta-
neously as normal digital inputs.

encoder (also called AB direction recognition) which can pro-
cess counting pulses up to 200 Hz. The connection is implem-
ented via the two inputs provided as listed in the table below.
An optional reference switch can also be connected via the
input listed in the table.

A.2 Output behavior at overload/shor t-circuit

The output ports (A0, A1, etc.) are short-circuit- and overload-
proof independently of each other.

If a short-circuit or overload current is applied, a temperature

rise occurs at the switching transistor. The overtemperature
fuse switches the respective output off so that the switching
transistor can cool down again. The respective output is acti-
vated afterwards again. If an overload current continuous to
exist after the activation, the process begins again.

The cycle length of the process depends on the extent of the

overload. In case of a low overload the cycle length can last
up to several minutes - at a high overload less than 1 second.

This behavior can be influenced, if necessary, by the operat-

ing system (FST, Multiprog).
