TRANSPORTATION OF WASTE:
The transportation vehicles collect the waste from the storage points and
ultimately dispose off to the final disposal site.
PROCESSING AND DISPOSAL:
The garbage from Bengali Market area is taken to a compost plant in Okhla which is temporarily closed. It
is being taken to Ghazipur landfill site in East Delhi. I
ISSUES:
•Garbage collection trolleys are not regular. There is no fixed time for collection of waste
•Segregation not done by residents. Not enough designated staff either

NEW DELHI
RAINWATER HARVESTING RAINWATER HARVESTING AND WATER TABLE: The precinct boasts of a fair share of
open areas and greens but these have not been exploited for rain water
harvesting sufficiently.
Rainwater harvesting pits are proposed at Lady Irwin college, FICCI, Nepal
embassy, Tilak Marg, Jantar mantar etc by NDMC.
The pre monsoon water level in the NDMC area is of the range 20 – 30 m below
ground level (bgl). However in the central part of NDMC area the water level is
in the range of 10-20 m bgl. While the post monsoon water level is less than 2m at
Panchkuiya road, but at Talkatora, Rail Bhawan, Connaught Place and Kidwai
Nagar area the water level is in the range of 10 to 20 m bgl.

NOISE LEVELS: Though noise levels are a problem in most parts of the city
specially the NDMC areas, noise levels in the immediate neighborhood of
Bengali market are relatively low. Faulty and leaking silencers, over-use of horns
and vehicles plying on roads accentuate noise level, besides the noise from
commercial activities; generator sets, passing trains etc. are major sources of
noise pollution.
The foliage in the area helps control noise levels. Also traffic within the residential
areas is not much of an issue here.
BIODIVERSITY AND VEGETATION: Our neighborhood is quite green and is home to
many species of trees. There are trees along roadsides, parks within residential
PRECINCT

localities, round-abouts, gardens within the bungalows , Central Park etc

Pigeons, sparrows, crows, swallows etc are birds that are sighted.
Issues:
Many of the avenue trees were planted about 100 years back and due to various
reasons they need to be replanted. Such trees amount approximately to about
200 trees per year. In addition, the metro construction caused felling of about 300
trees which also needs re- plantation. Plantation of new trees and to nurturing the
same is a challenging task. The survival rate of the trees that are planted along
the road is extremely poor.0

AIR QUALITY: The air quality in Bengali market precinct faces high stress due to
growing vehicular population on the roads and two power plants located on
the periphery of NDMC area2..
