Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The PowerPoint presentation incorporates the principles of UDL in various ways. For instance, there
are:
 Audio and Visual components to the PowerPoint, since it is recorded using an audio clip with
each slide and has visual images/ text on each slide, which supports auditory and visual
learners.

 ELL students can access replay the recording if they need the audio to repeat a phrase back to
them in English.

 Students with an auditory disability can read the text on each slide.

 Students with a visual disability can have the audio recording repeated multiple times.

 Representation: Students can access the PowerPoint software on a phone, tablet, or

computer

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will start by segmenting each of the historical figures (people) over the course of a few days,
where students are learning about a new time period/person each day. I will ask students if they have any
ideas of who these people are or their impact on history (as a way to assess their prior knowledge). The
teacher will the present the PowerPoint to engage the students with the technology tool. The PowerPoint
presentation can be projected a projector or a Smartboard, depending on the classroom resources. My

students will be given time in the media center or in the classroom with Chromebooks to conduct research on
the historical time period each person lived in and how that influenced their historical impact. For example,
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1741) impact: electricity, invented the lightning rod and record their findings in a
notebook. The students will share their discoveries with their table group and report their information in a
whole-class discussion with the teacher. The students will be assessed on the quality of their responses and
their ability to create a historical timeline.

The final timeline they create will be created either on paper, or on a computer app. This shows differentiation
through the various means of platforms students can choose to create their timeline on. Ideally, the students
will be given 1-2 days to research their historical person and a separate day to create their timeline. To
summarize the lesson, I will have my students address 3 key points or facts they learned about each person
and 1 sentence to summarize each person impact during that historical time period.

Reflective Practice:

This lesson impacts students learning by promoting creativity, since they can choose the platform to use to
create the historical timeline. It also allows students to understand sequencing and chronological order
through the range of dates each person lived. Sequencing places a role with the timeline as students organize
the dates. To further extend this lesson, I would have the students use the timeline as a part of a “final”
project for the end of the unit where each student would be assigned to one historical figure and they would
present their research to the class on a poster board, PowerPoint, word document, etc. Other possible
technology tool that could support this lesson is the website bubbl.us for students to brainstorm and organize
their ideas.
