A DETAILED LESSON PLAN

IN MATHEMATICS 7

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:

A. Identify the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions

B. Apply the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions
C. Show appreciation in working group activity

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Evaluating Expression

Reference: E- Math by Orlando A. Oronce and Marilyn O.Mendoza

Instructional Materials: Visual Aids, Activity envelop, Chalk and board.

III. Instructional Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Daily routine

1. Prayer

Class let’s all stand up.

Before we start, let us pray first. All students are stand up and pray.

Our Father……Amen

2. Greeting

Good Morning Class. Good Morning Ma’am.

3. Checking of Attendance

Is everybody present for today? Yes ma’am, everybody is present today.

B. Priming / Activating Prior Knowledge

1. Drill

Class, find the answer to the following

multi operation mathematical expression by
connecting the expression in column A to the
corresponding answer in column B.
A B A B

(3)(8) –(14 + 10) 5 (3)(8) –(14 + 10) 5

100 100
(2 + 6) ( 2-3) (2 + 6) ( 2-3)
-8 -8
(2 x 3 ) + 4 - 5 (2 x 3 ) + 4 - 5

(2 + 6 )(2) – (-4) 3 (2 + 6 )(2) – (-4) 3

(2)( 3 ) / ( 3-1) 20 (2)( 3 ) / ( 3-1) 20

[ 4 + 2 + ( 24 / 6)]2 0 [ 4 + 2 + ( 24 / 6)]2 0

Very good!

2. Review

How do we solve multi operation Ma’am we solve multi operation

mathematics expression? mathematical expression by following the
rules of PEMDAS.

Very good!
And what does PEMDAS stand for? The students will state the answer.
Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, and Subtraction.
That is correct! We solve multi operation
expression by following the operation order of
Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, division,
Addition, and Subtraction.

C. Lesson Development

1. Motivation / Activity

Class, where do we usually hear the

word substitution?
Students will raise their hands.
Ma’am, we hear substitution in basketball,
volleyball, etc……
And how do we substitute in
Basketball? Ma’am the player is replaced by another
player.
That’s right.
Now class, we will having an activity
called “Sub me in”

Let A=1 H=8 O=15 V=22

B=2 I= 9 P=16 W=23
C=3 J=10 Q=17 X=24
D=4 K=11 R=18 Y=25
E=5 L=12 S=19 Z=26
F=6 M=13 T=20
G=7 N=14 U=21
Find the equivalent value of the given
words by substituting the numerical value above
to each letter of the word and adding all numerical
digits.

For example:
H U M B L E
8 + 21 + 13 + 2 + 12 + 5 = 61

Do you get it class? Yes, ma’am.

Are you ready class? Yes ma’am, we are ready.

Who would like to try the first word? A student will be called to answer.

KNOWLEDGE K N O W L E D G E
11 + 14 + 15 + 23 + 12 + 5 + 4 + 7 + 5 = 96
Now for the second word.

H A R D W O R K H A R D W O R K
8 + 1 + 18 + 4 + 23 + 15 + 18 + 11 = 98
How about the last word.

M I S S I S S I P P I M I S S I S S I P P
I
13 + 9 + 19 + 19 + 9 + 19 + 19 +9+16 +16 +
9
Very good class, does everyone have the =157
same answer?
Yes ma’am.

2. Analysis

What did we do in our activity?

Ma’am we find the numerical value of the

Correct. And how we find the value of the given words.
given word?
Ma’am we the substitute the corresponding
And then what’s next? value in each letter.

Ma’am we perform the indicated operation,

Very good. we add all the value.

Class, when a number is substituted or

replace for the variable in a given algebraic
expression, the expression takes a numerical
value. And finding the value is what we call
“Evaluating the Algebraic Expression”.

Let’s do this example.

Evaluate 6x2 + 3 when
a. x = 0
b. x = -2
c. x = ½

For letter a, how do we evaluate?

Ma’am we substitute the given value of x in

Correct. Can someone show us how to the equation.
substitute the value of x in our equation?
A student will be called to substitute the
value of x.
6(0)2 + 3 =

Very good!
Now what is the next step? We perform the indicated operations.

Since we got here a multi operation Ma’am we follow the rules of PEMDAS.
equation, what should we do?

Excellent! Can someone demonstrate on 6(0)2 + 3 =

how to apply the rules of PEMDAS in our 6(0) + 3 =
equations? 0+3=3

That is correct!
Now for letter b, x = -2.
Who would like to try following the same A student will be called to answer.
steps? 6x2 + 3 =
6(-2)2 + 3 =
6 (4) + 3 =
24 + 3 = 27

And for the last example, x=1/2 6x2 + 3 =

6(1/2)2 + 3 =
6(1/4) + 3 =
6/4 + 3 =
Following the rules in adding dissimilar
fractions.
6/4 + 12/4 = 18/4 or 9/2

3. Abstraction
Now class, in evaluating algebraic 1. Substitute the given value to the variable.
expression, what are the step that we need to 2. Perform the indicated operation by
follow? following the rules of PEMDAS.

Very good!

4. Application

Now that you already know how to

evaluate algebraic expressions, we will be having
a group activity. I will divide you into two groups
or ( depend for number of students). Each group
will choose their leaders. The leader will be the
one who can ask me about the activity and he /
she is also responsible for dividing the tasks
between the members of the group.
Each group will be given an activity envelope
where you will find the materials for the activity
and the expressions that your group will be going
to evaluate.

Now, the group activity will be scored according

to this standard.
