Teaching/Learning  Context

Rule/Expectation

Mrs.  Gee  expects  her  students  to  pay  attention  and  not  talk  when  she  is  talking.

There  are  times  where  she  allows  a  little  talking,  but  will  remind  her  students  to

listen.  If  you  want  to  talk  or  have  a  question,  you  are  supposed  to  raise  your  hand.

They  also  follow  the  rules  in  the  school  section  below,  but  it  is  not  something  they

discuss  often.  It  is  also  a  rule  that  they  do  not  run  in  the  classroom  and  that  they

wash  their  hands  when  they  come  in  from  recess.

Procedures

There  are  many  different  procedures  within  this  classroom.  There  are  classroom  job

assignments  that  are  given  everyday  and  that  the  whole  class  is  cycled  through.

There  are  little  pictures  to  signify  the  specific  jobs  and  student’s  names  are  placed

on  them  daily.  Jobs  include  pledge,  math  helper,  calendar,  line  leaders,  cabooses,

paper  passer,  and  a  door  holder.  Another  procedure  they  have  is  that  if  you  need  to

go  to  the  bathroom,  you  ask,  and  only  one  student  is  allowed  in  there  at  a  time.

There  is  a  homework  bin  to  put  homework  in.  They  also  have  folders  with  a  return

to  school  side  and  a  keep  at  home  side.

Schedule

There  is  no  set  schedule  for  every  class.  Sometimes  there  are  different  things  that

change  up  the  schedule,  like  library.  But  on  most  days,  the  students  will  come  into

the  classroom,  put  their  homework  in  the  bin,  and  put  their  folder  in  their  cubby.

They  will  then  grab  their  pencil  box,  put  it  down  next  to  their  nametag  on  a  table,
and  go  and  sit  on  the  kiva.  Next,  a  book  will  be  read,  and  classroom  job  assignments

given.  Pledge,  math,  and  calendar  will  follow.  Literacy  occurs  next,  followed  by

centers,  recess,  and  snack.  Usually  they  will  have  a  little  work  to  do  after  recess.  The

last  thing  they  are  instructed  to  do  is  to  grab  their  folders,  and  put  their  homework

and  papers  inside.  They  will  bring  their  nametag  to  their  teacher,  line  up  to  go  home

and  then  their  day  is  done.

Classroom  Management

There  are  a  couple  different  things  that  she  will  do  that  will  help  with  classroom

management.  The  class  will  receive  points  for  good  behavior.  If  the  class  receives

three  points  within  the  day,  each  student  will  be  given  an  m&n.  She  will  also  often

praise  the  class  when  they  are  listening  really  well,  or  understanding  and  answering

concepts  correctly.  When  students  begin  to  misbehave  or  are  distracted  she  says

“eyes,”  meaning  eyes  on  her.  When  the  students  line  up  she  says  “1,  2,  3,”  1  means

feet  planted  on  the  ground  toward  her.  2  means  we  close  our  mouths  and  3  means

our  eyes  are  on  the  persons  back  in  front  of  us.  If  students  are  talking  a  lot  and  not

listening  to  her  reminders  she  will  sometimes  give  a  warning.  If  they  continue  they

will  be  given  a  refocus  paper.  This  is  a  school  wide  practice  as  well  and  the  details  of

this  is  provided  under  the  school  section.  One  other  thing  is  that  if  something  is

done  wrong,  they  will  be  asked  to  try  again.  An  example  is  if  they  run  from  the  kiva

to  their  desks.  They  will  be  asked  to  come  back  and  try  again.

Climate

The  climate  of  Mrs.  Gee’s  classroom  is  one  of  learning,  excitement  and  love.  You  can

tell  that  she  cares  about  her  students  by  the  way  that  she  talks  to  them.  It  is  a  fast
paced  class,  moving  from  one  activity  to  the  next.  Students  are  allowed  to  talk  so

much  as  it  doesn’t  disrupt  others  and  they  are  respectful  as  she  gives  instruction.

She  encourages  her  students  to  help  one  another  and  take  care  of  one  another.  The

students  respect  her  and  listen  to  her  when  she  gives  warnings  or  reminders.  You

can  tell  that  they  have  practiced  the  procedures  and  rules  of  the  classroom.

Students

• Tes  is  below  grade  level  but  has  made  a  lot  of  progress  since  the  beginning  of

the  semester.  She  came  to  school  not  knowing  how  to  tie  her  shoes,  knew

two  letters  and  could  write  her  name.  Now  she  knows  15-‐20  letters.

• Addison  just  moved  here,  but  she  is  reading  and  is  on  grade  level.

• James  is  quiet  but  on  grade  level.  He  is  someone  you  need  to  watch  for  and

help  him  stay  engaged  and  encourage  him  to  participate.

• Mitchel  struggled  at  the  beginning  of  the  year,  but  is  doing  a  lot  better  now.

He  is  in  Mrs.  Johnasen’s  class  as  well  (extended  school  year).  He  is  sweet  and

kind  to  his  teacher  and  classmates.

• Dax  wants  a  lot  of  attention  and  is  a  little  above  grade  level.  He  is  always

raising  his  hand  and  correcting  his  classmates.

• Ridge  loves  school  and  is  right  on  grade  level.  He  is  quiet  and  easily  passed

over,  but  when  encouraged  he  will  answer  questions.

• Avery  is  the  obedient  student  of  the  classroom.  She  is  quiet  but  has  a  strong

personality  and  wants  to  help  the  teacher.  She  is  right  on  grade  level.

• Benson  is  slightly  above  grade  level  and  is  really  starting  to  read  well.  He  is

usually  happy  and  content.

• Anystin  has  a  blood  disorder  you  have  to  be  careful  that  she  doesn’t  bump

into  things.  She  struggled  at  the  beginning  of  the  year  in  Mrs.  Johansen’s  class

but  is  now  really  close  to  being  on  grade  level.

• Jax  is  a  very  sweet  boy.  He  struggles  in  school  and  was  just  barely  put  in  Mrs.

Johansen’s  class  in  addition.  He  is  quiet  and  doesn’t  draw  attention  to

himself.

• Jared  is  below  grade  level  but  his  mom  has  been  working  with  him  at  home

and  that  has  helped  him  to  grow.  He  is  friendly  to  his  classmates  and  even

though  he  struggles,  he  wants  to  participate  in  class  often.

• Bostyn  is  below  grade  level,  but  not  because  she  couldn’t  understand.  She  is

easily  distracted  and  most  of  class  is  laying  down  in  her  seat  and  moving

around.  When  you  are  able  to  sit  down  with  her  and  help  her  focus  she  is  able

to  grasp  the  concepts.

• Makai  is  on  grade  level.  He  doesn’t  have  a  filter  and  can  sometimes  say  things

meanly  to  his  classmates  and  teacher.  He  is  easily  frustrated  and  emotional

and  when  he  gets  to  that  place,  he  will  refuse  to  do  work.  He  is  constantly

talking  and  having  to  be  reminded  to  pay  attention.

• Elizabeth  is  on  grade  level.    English  is  her  2nd  language  but  you  wouldn’t

know  that  if  you  met  her.  She  knows  a  lot  of  sight  words  and  can  sound  out

words.  Every  once  in  a  while  she  will  come  across  a  word  she  does  not  know.

• Kiley  is  right  on  grade  level  and  wants  to  please  her  teacher.  She  is  outgoing

and  friendly.
• Bailey  is  above  grade  level.  She  is  often  the  first  to  blurt  out  the  answer  and

answers  correctly  most  of  the  time.  She  has  type  1  diabetes  and  is  very  good

at  keeping  track  and  working  with  the  teacher  for  snack.

• Kobin  is  on  grade  level.  He  is  easily  distracted  and  a  bit  spacey.  He  needs  a

good  amount  of  reminders  to  help  him  refocus.  He  is  an  outgoing  student  and

gets  along  with  his  peers.

• Karson  is  below  grade  level.  He  slurs  his  words  together  at  times  and  can  be

hard  to  understand.  His  classmates  will  sometimes  tell  him  they  can’t

understand  him,  so  he  is  embarrassed.  This  results  in  him  being  pretty  quiet,

even  when  he  talks  and  will  not  raise  his  hand  very  much  in  class.

• Cooper  is  on  grade  level.  He  is  a  pretty  good  reader  and  is  very  independent.

He  does  struggle  with  mixing  up  the  /t/  and  /th/  sound  and  the  /r/  and  /w/

sound.

• Autemn  is  below  grade  level.  She  just  moved  here.  Because  of  her  family

situation  she  has  moved  between  places  every  four  months,  which  has

effected  her  schooling  greatly.  She  will  often  cry  when  her  dad  drops  her  off

from  school.  She  knows  some  letters,  but  she  cannot  write  her  name  and

needs  a  lot  of  support  and  guidance.

School

Central  Elementary  has  a  friendly  atmosphere.  The  teachers  and  principle  seem  to

collaborate  and  talk  often.  According  to  my  teacher,  many  parents  are  involved

within  the  school.  At  the  beginning  of  the  year,  my  teacher  had  100%  attendance  at
her  parent  teacher  conference.  She  said  that  as  a  school  they  have  parent  teacher

attendance  that  is  in  the  80th  percentile.

There  is  also  a  school  wide  program  called  Time  to  Teach  or  Ways  to  act.  Within

this  program  there  is  ten  items.  Each  item  has  a  picture  to  represent  it.

• Follow  the  teacher’s  direction  the  first  time

• If  you  want  the  teachers  attention,  raise  your  hand

• You  have  your  space,  I  have  my  space

• Where  ever  your  eyes  go,  your  brain  follows  (referring  that  if  your  eye  are  on

the  teacher,  then  you  will  learn  as  well)

• Just  because  you  think  it,  doesn’t  me  you  say  it  (we  use  positive  words)

• You  don’t  always  get  what  you  want,  but  you  get  what  you  need

• Always  tell  the  truth

• When  you  do  the  right  thing  you  feel  good  inside  (they  call  it  having  a  happy

heart)

• The  more  you  practice,  the  better  you  get

• I  have  my  own  brain,  I  make  my  own  choices

School  wide,  when  a  child  misbehaves  they  will  receive  one  warning.  If  a  child

continues  to  misbehave,  they  will  have  to  complete  a  refocus  paper.  A  refocus  paper

includes  the  child  looking  at  the  above  items  and  circling  which  item/(picture  that

represents  it)  they  were  not  following.
