Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Khan Academy provides free world-class education to all students. These videos can be watched at the
student’s home before class for a great warmup. Because of the vast amounts of videos and quizzes, students
can further test their knowledge and understanding of the subjects by challenging themselves. For our lesson
we are going to be studying the relationships between cell structures and their functions and khan academy is
full of great videos and practices for students to learn visually and auditorily. This will lead to a greater
understanding.
Lesson idea implementation:
Cells are the basic structures of living organisms that provide important functions by taking in nutrients from
food. Together cells form tissues which in turn form organs like our heart and brain. Have you ever seen
someone get poisoned from food or have diseases such as cancer, or diabetes? These diseases are all caused

at the cellular level and by understanding how cells work in healthy and unhealthy states, biologists are then
able to develop cures and other preventative medicines to help and improve our lives.
For our lesson students will form groups of 3 and study one of the main functional structures of the cell. They
will then present their knowledge and expertise through a PowerPoint presentation to educate their peers
about their organelle. Just like the cells many functional structures, the class will work together and learn
from each other. This project will take approximately one week, and the groups will be graded on their
presentation, lesson plans, as well as their peer review.

Reflective Practice: I feel the activity that I have created, will make learning about cells more fun and
memorable. Students tend to zone out when they are given too much drill and kill practices which is why a
change of pace like this is a much needed fresh of breath air. By working in groups and elevating each other
the students will not only learn teamwork, but they will also have a great responsibility to teach their peers.
One way to elevate and extend this lesson is to have the groups make models of their respective cell
structures and have them put the cell together. We can then take the class cell and share it with the world
through our class and school website.
