INTRODUCTION

As we can see, some students waste their opportunity to study, as it is written in the chapter

four of the another research – entitled, the “Unveiling of the dark side of Education”. The status of one’s

education will tell what is the job fitted for him/her. Albert Einstein from the Answers.com once said, “Try

not to be a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value.”, because, yes, you could succeed

on everything if you wanted it, but are there any values and lessons learned in the process? If you are a

person of value, the people around you will also see the value of your existence and the success with joy and

peace, you can bring. We can also consider that those students who study well has an opportunity to study,

as it is also written in the chapter two of an another research, the ‘Unveiling of the dark side of Education’,

“Cutting classes obviously decreases the need opportunities for them to learn. All the important lessons they

need to learn in order to become academically competent, instead of learning, they are ruining their lives

with vices”. For them, taking studying seriously may be hard. Ever since, students who cut class has always

been a problem of the teachers. But what could be the reason of these students why they cut their classes?

The researchers are going to conduct a research study focusing on the students of Dasmarinas National High

School, including the junior high school students. The researchers will make an interview and survey to

know the reasons of these students and to get the teachers’ and parents’ perception about this issue. And

when this research became successful, it will help the teachers and parents resolve the problem of these

students that cut their classes.

Statement of the Problem

Students who cut their class are one of the burdens of the teachers and parents, also in our

society. One of the most reasons of these students who fail in their grades is cutting their classes, the

curiousness of why do these students do such thing hit us. The researchers want to conduct this research

because they want to know why these students cut their classes having the opportunity to study. Also the

researchers realized that, when they finished the research, they can help these students that cut their classes

encourage themselves to study well because not everyone is blessed to be given the opportunity to study.
This is the reason we, as the researcher and as a student conducted it, for us to understand them and to know

the reason, prevent, solve, and save these students from wasting their opportunity to study. “What matters

most for me is how much I like the class. Sometimes a class is good because it is simply an interesting topic.

However, an otherwise boring subject can become an interesting class if the lecturer is able to present the

course material in such a clear and cogent manner that students cannot help finding it interesting. Generally

I have found that if a lecturer genuinely finds the material he/she is teaching [interesting], and he/she is able

to connect with students through lectures (present material in a way that makes sense), then he/she doesn’t

have trouble making the material interesting for students” (Tom Clay and Lori Breslow, 2006).

Statement of the Purpose

The reason why we conducted this research is that, the researcher wants to know the reasons

of these students why they cut their classes. Because this days, it is quite bothering in every campus where

in, every schools has the same kind of problem which is the students that cut their class, that’s why we

conducted this research.

Research Questions

General Question: What are the reasons of the students for cutting classes?

Specific Question:

What do you think could be the reason of this students that’s why they cut their classes?

Could it be:

A. Social reasons or problem

B. Because of academic problems

C. Because of the relationship

D. Because of family problems

E. Because of part time work

Overview of Methodology

The researchers are going to make an interview for the student’s reasons for cutting class.

The researchers will conduct the study in Dasmarinas National High School – Senior High School,

including the Junior High School Students. And they’re also going to search answers from the related

researches and analyze it so they’ll be able to give a reliable and valid research. The researchers will be

using Random Sampling. The researchers used this kind of sampling because the method that they’re going

to use in interviewing and surveying, corresponds to the meaning of the Simple Random Sampling. They

will randomly ask the participants who will respond to the survey and interviews.

Rational and Significance of the Study

As it said earlier, students that cut their classes are getting out of hand, most of the teachers

are encountering students that cut their classes every school year. In the chapter one of ‘Unveiling of the

dark side of Education’, Cutting classes is being rampant especially in public schools in the Philippines. In

this research, the researchers are going to know the reasons why do these students cut their classes, so that

we would be able to find ways to encourage them not to waste their opportunity to study, and also to deliver

this information to the teachers and parents to help them to solve or prevent these students from cutting

classes. We have chosen our participants – Senior High and Junior High School students – because we know

that they can help or contribute to the research study we’re making. This study is very rational, because it is

already disturbing for the teachers and parents who give a lot of effort to help these students to achieve

success and their dreams. Cited in Tom Clay’s and Lori Breslow’s (2006) research, that the students that cut

classes is bothering these days because of its increasing issues.

Role of the Researcher

The researchers will prepare all the necessary instruments needed for conducting the

research. After gathering and analyzing all the information’s and data’s and extract the important details to

give us a good conclusion.

Research Assumptions

One of the possible factors that affect the student to do cut class is due to the boredom about

the teacher’s discussion. Base on the daily news in Turkey (2009) named “Monitoring students”, almost

eighty nine students answered boredom after they were asked, also peers is one of a cause. The desire of

being with them always affect their study negatively even though they think that skipping class will not

affect their future (Azus, 2012). Though every time we hear the words cutting class the first thing that

comes in our mind is its negative effects like, because it drag their grade down, the student don’t learn

anything. That affects their quizzes, exam scores, and optional review; make them have a failing grade

(Taylor, 2016). The researcher believe that cutting class has also a positive effect like skipping class to do

such assignments or projects, more time with the family and others, as Yorke and Longden (2008) describe

that, ‘making friends is an important part of having a positive first year experience’.

Definition of Key Terminologies

Junior High School is the middle school that meet the developmental needs of preadolescents.

As Howley (2002) points out the developmental needs of young adolescents differ from those of elementary

school children and older teenagers. “Developmentally responsive middle schools must take into account all

that is known about young adolescents and the cultural context in which they live” ( Lounsbury, 1996).

Cutting class is a routine absence or skipping on your class that harms the students exam

scores, missing pre exam review and quizzes

Senior High School (SHS) refers to the last two years of the K to 12 program, namely as grade

11 and 12 base on the DepEd guide book named as “Senior Hi”.

Simple Random Sampling is a basic technique of sampling where we select a group of subjects

for study from a larger group, each individual is chosen entirely by chance and each member of the
population has an equal chance of being included in the sample. Every possible sample of a given size has

the same chance of selection (Easton and McColl’s , 2015).

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

Chapter two will provide a synthesis that supports the evaluation of the study about the

reasons of the students who did cutting class, included the Theoretical basis of the study, Conceptual

Framework, Citations, and Review of primary sources that can provide the information about the said topic.

Theoretical Basis of the Study

Conceptual Framework

The organizer below will lead us to know the reasons for the students to do cut class.

Social interactions with the other might affect the

confidence of the students, especially if that
student experience discrimination from the other.
That lead on skipping the class although it also have

Academic subjects sometimes give too much

assignments and seat works that resulted an work load
impact, that resulted on having stress and laziness of
students resulting of not attending class.

Romantic relationship. Social status or being in a

relationship also might be the one factor, they spend there
Cutting Classes time on their couple instead of concentrating on their study.
Of Students But then this thought will depend on how he or she balance
the two variables (Steinhauer and Holson, 2008).

Family Problem. Families should be the one who boosts up the

confidence of a student, it should be the one of the inspiration,
but sometimes, due to the problems that we cannot avoid,
students lost its eagerness on studying that also resulted on
skipping their class (Amato, 2005).

Work. Financial is important when it comes on living. Those students

who doesn't have enough money or in the lower class of strata, needs
to work to sustain their study that sometimes lead on skipping class.

Figure no. 1 Conceptual Framework

Factors such as social interactions, academic, relationships, family, and work, affect the life

of the students that becomes destruction, trigger to lose the eagerness to study, and make a student not

interested at all. It leads to cutting their classes, but it always depend on how the student will handle the

situation around him/her. As Brush & Jones, 2002 state, “Respect me for who I am, require me to do my

best and give me the help I need to achieve it”. Things always depend on how a student will absorb the

action of the around him/her.

METHODOLOGY

In this part of the chapter, you will see how or what methods the researchers did to gather

informations. The researchers will use Random Sampling since it is a grounded theory. Gathering datas like

interviewing, surveying, and scanning and looking at the internet and books will be applied. These methods

will help the researchers to prove the conclusion of their work stronger.

Rationale

The researcher’s grounded theory in their research for their curiousness started out from

nothing. They also like to create another theory about this issue – students that waste their opportunity by

cutting classes.

Research Sample and Data Sources

To give this research a more founded proof, the researchers will interview some students

that are connected with the researchers study. Also, we are going to look on the internet and scan some

books for have more data’s. Simple Random Sampling will be used as method we are going to use to select

our thirty random participants. We used thirty participants because based on the statement of (Ritchie et al.,

2003), suggests that within qualitative research the sample size is usually small primary because phenomena

only need to appear once to be part of the analytical map. After a while there is a point of diminishing return

when increasing the sample size is no longer contributes to new evidence and also, in the view of Gonzalez

(2009) when undertaking research that is reliant on a phenomenological approach, the sample size is usually

driven by the need to uncover all the main variants within the approach, he suggests that within conditions

such as this, small survey samples of less than twenty are common. The participants will be asked randomly

chosen for the research.

Data Collection Methods

On collecting information’s and data, we will conduct a survey and interview to some

students which is the major participants for this qualitative research. We will also gather information from

the previous researcher. The participants will be the Senior High School Students from Dasmarinas National

High School. We will be conducting the surveys and interviews during our free time – our lunch break, and

our dismissal. Below is the graphical presentation of our data of methodology:

As we construct the interview After we construct the

questions, we thought of questions that we are going to
