study
investigates
social

teachers’
and

attitudes
associated

controversial
issues.
The
data
was
collected
through
interviews
and
in-‐classroom
observation.
This
study

conducted
in
a
city
near
the
center
of
Turkey
called
Kirsehir.
This
particular
study
was
done
during
the
2012-‐2013
academic
years.
Social
studies
teachers
stated
that
their
priority
goals
when
speaking
about
controversial
topics
was
to
raise
active
citizens
and
set
up
a
democratic
classroom
environment.
Science
teachers
stated
that
that
their
goals
were
to
raise
scientifically
thinking
students.

The
study
states
that
knowledge
is
social
constructed.

identity,
ethnicity,
race,
and
gender
to
change
the
parameters
set
by
local
school
districts.
The
author
goes
on
to
say
that
her
teaching
experience
is
similar
to
that
of
Sal
Castro.
Sal
Castro
was
a
champion
for
student
rights
and
fought
for
unequal
conditions.
