Trusses and channel frame conveyor stringers must be installed parallel, straight, square, and level
to allow proper belt training. During installation, dimensional checks shall be made to ensure that
the following tolerances in the idler carrying chords are not exceeded.
NOTE: These tolerances are guidelines to facilitate proper idler and belt alignment. The overriding
issue is idler and belt alignment as opposed to structural alignment.
PARALLEL
A maximum tolerance of ± 3mm shall be allowed for the back to back dimension in channel frame
or angle stringers. Similarly, ± 3mm shall be allowed between webs of I-beams, wide flange
beams, or tees when used as truss chords (Figure 1).
STRAIGHTNESS
The maximum allowable lateral offset in conveyor stringers shall be 3mm in 12m of length (or 1mm
for every 3m) (Figure 2).

LEVEL
The two idler support members shall be level within ± 3mm regardless of belt width. In addition the
elevation of stringer above support structure shall be held within ± 6mm (Figure 4).

Suitable records should be kept of installed roll misalignment values. If misalignment values are
exceeded this will negatively affect idler component life.
Similar tolerance in terms of parallel, straightness, squareness and level must apply for horizontally
curved sections.
Garland suspensions must only be engaged as shown on relevant drawing. This is especially
important for garland return idlers. Make sure that the chain is only hooked in the correct link. This
location may be marked (paint) as an aid to assist installation. Failure to adhere to this may add
severe loading to both roll and suspension components.
Before installing idlers check for loose bolts or items on garland, retractable, training idlers and
adjustable idlers etc. and tighten if required. If required, touch up paint damages from transport and
installation using recommended paint manufacturers’ repair procedure.
IDLER ALIGNMENT
Idlers should be mounted with bolts in the centre of slotted holes. Once idlers have been mounted
check that each idler is level or inclined at the correct angle, is square to the belt line within 1º and
loosely fastened. Squareness can be measured in a similar way as shown in Figure 3.
Vertical misalignment between idler sets must be checked and must be within the same limits as for
the mounting holes. If necessary, loosen fasteners and shim to adjust level, out of square and
vertical misalignment. Fasten when done.
