The PDCCH Power Boost feature benefits the user in the following ways:

• Improved system capacity due to an increased number of scheduled users

per TTI, especially for the VoIP traffic.

• Increased cell coverage for, for example beam-forming (TM7 and TM8)
and heterogeneous network scenarios due to increased PDCCH
coverage.

PDCCH Power Boost

2 Feature Operation

This section describes the PDCCH Power Boost feature in more detail,
including network configuration requirements and operation flows.

2.1 Network Requirements

The following must be fulfilled at feature activation:

• The PDCCH Power Boost feature license must be installed.

2.2 Feature Operation

PDCCH Control Channel Element (CCE) and Power are key resources of
PDCCH transmission. Without this feature, only CCE resources are taken into
account. PDCCH power is a fixed value, which enables PDCCH power but
CCE resources are wasted. The PDCCH Power Boost feature calculates the
power boost value and CCE aggregation level, so PDCCH resources
efficiency are increased, and the system capacity is also improved.
Furthermore, when the maximum aggregation level and maximum boost
power are allocated, PDCCH cell coverage is improved.

2.3 Process Steps

This section describes the main process steps for the feature flow.

2.3.1 CCE Aggregation Level and Boost Power Pre-calculation

This function calculates the CCE aggregation level and the boost value based
on CCE cost and PDCCH Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) from
the PDCCH link Adaptation feature. A User Equipment (UE) at any cell
position is supported to calculate the corresponding CCE aggregation level
and boost power.

2.3.2 Boost Value and PDCCH Power per OFDM Symbol Checking
The requested maximum boost power level, given by the MOM parameter
pdcchPowerBoostMax, is validated against the available PDCCH power in the
control region.

Feature Operation

2.3.3 CCE Allocation

CCE allocation is a basic function introduced as part of LTE basic, which is the
baseline of the PDCCH Power Boost feature.

2.4 Supported Bandwidth

The PDCCH Power Boost feature supports bandwidth of 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20
MHz.

The boost is for UE specific search space rather than common search space.

PDCCH Power Boost

3 Parameters

This section describes parameters introduced by the PDCCH Power Boost

feature and parameters affected by activating the feature.

3.1 Introduced Parameters

Table 1 describes the parameters introduced by the feature.

Table 1 Introduced Parameters

Parameter Description
pdcchPowerBoostMax This MOM attribute indicates the maximum power boost in dB
applied to PDCCHs that require more than the maximum CCE
aggregation level.
This MOM attribute is only used for UE specific search space
boosting.
0 means no boost on the max CCE aggregation level .
Exists for MO classes:

• EUtranCellFDD.pdcchPowerBoostMax

• EUtranCellTDD.pdcchPowerBoostMax

3.2 Affected Parameters

The implementation of this feature affects no parameters.

Network Impact

4 Network Impact

This section describes how the PDCCH Power Boost feature impacts the
network functions and capabilities.

4.1 Capacity
This section provides information on the impact of the feature on network
capacity.

If the feature is activated, the cell capacity measured as the average number
of scheduled PDCCHs per Transmission Time Interval (TTI) is increased in
typical high load VoIP scenarios/conditions.

4.2 Coverage
This section provides information on the impact of the feature on network
coverage.

If the feature is activated to increase the PDCCH Power Spectral Density

(PSD) level for CCE aggregation level 4 or 8, i.e. if the MOM parameter
pdcchPowerBoostMax> 0, PDCCH cell coverage is increased, The feature is
especially suitable for a TM7/TM8 scenario where Physical Downlink Shared
Channel (PDSCH) does not limit cell coverage, but it is not confined to these
two transmission modes. The feature can also be applied to all other
transmission modes.

PDCCH Power Boost

5 Associated Features and Affected

Functions

This section describes how the PDCCH Power Boost feature affects other
features and functions.

5.1 Prerequisite Features

This feature has no prerequisite features to be activated.

5.2 Affected Features

Table 2 lists features that are affected by the PDCCH Power Boost feature.

Table 2 Affected Features

Feature Description
Enhanced PDCCH Link Adaptation FDD only: The feature improves PDCCH capacity and
robustness.

• Improved VoIP capacity

• Improved throughput in case of downlink frequency selective

scheduling with large bandwidth

• Reduced PDCCH interference

• Better control and monitoring of PDCCH error rate

Both the Enhanced PDCCH Link Adaptation feature and the

PDCCH power boost feature will increase the PDCCH capacity.
Both of the features can be activated simultaneously, or
activated respectively. The total capacity gain when both
features are activated, will, however, in most cases be less than
the sum of the separate feature gains.

For TDD, this feature affects no other feature.

5.3 Related Features

This feature is not related to any other feature.

5.4 Affected System Functions

This feature affects no system functions.
