1. What is research?
There are numerous definitions given to research by different authors such as;
a) “To search or to investigate again.” It may be any of the following: exploring and
investigating a problem, making inquiries and delving into issues, examining and studying a
phenomenon, acquiring new knowledge, or simply integrating previous knowledge (Young,
2013).
c) Travers (1969) has described research as an activity directed towards the development of
an organized body of scientific knowledge about the events with which human beings are
concerned. The goal is to discover general principles or interpretations of behavior, to explain,
predict and control events in everyday life situations (Ishola, 2009).
d) Isidro and Malolos (1979) defines research as “a process of scientific thinking that leads to
the discovery or establishment of new knowledge or truth.” Good (1956), on the other hand,
explains that research is “ideally, the careful, unbiased investigation of a problem, based
insofar as possible, upon demonstrable facts and involving refined distinctions, interpretations
and usually some generalizations.”
e) Drew (1980) affirms that research is “a systematic way of asking questions” while Neuman
(1997) considers it as “a way of going about finding answers to questions about the social
world.”
f) Treece and Treece defined research in the broadest sense as “an attempt to gain solutions
to problems. More precisely, it is the collection of data in a rigorously controlled situation for
the purpose of prediction or explanation.”
g) Aquino, on the other hand, presented a rather simple yet detailed meaning for research. He
said that “research is, simply, the systematic search for pertinent information on a specific
topic or problem. After a careful, systematic search for pertinent information or data on a
specific topic or problem, and after the research worker has analyzed and interpreted the
data,he eventually faces another essential task – that of preparing the research project
(Aquino, p.)
Research has been the key to man’s progress. Technological advancement in education,
industry, medicine, business and in almost all facets of the real world is believed to be the product
of research. Society in other words benefits from this activity. Specifically, research aims for the
spiritual enhancement of an individual as he develops traits and values of honesty, patience and
perseverance and observance of ethics in the process of research writing. Research is valuable to
education as it sets the foundation to improve learning and teaching process. Its monetary
benefits are the by-product of research. As references are written authors or writers continue to
get the financial reward out of their work (Opina et al., 2014).
There are several reasons why educators conduct researches such as;
1. To create new knowledge
2. To guide management in their decision-making activities through information.
3. To discover/ gain new opportunities for revenue and profit
4. To remain current in terms of technology
5. To find answer/s to practical problems
6. To test or refine theories or hypotheses
7. To gain greater or clearer understanding about something
8. To fulfill course requirements
Other Purposes for the Conduct of Research are;
1. Training in Research
2. Problem solving
3. Search for Truth
There are several ways for educators to enhance skills in research such as enrolling in
post-graduate studies which requires studying subject in research and participating in
workshops which aims to enhance researching capabilities. Research skills of an educator may
also enhance through reading about ow to conduct research in every possible sources such as
journals, books, online sources or other multimedia sources to build a foundation and
eventually enhancing research skills.
