Question 1: Please provide your thoughts and examples which explain Einstein’s quote.
Please include discussion on the “elements of a successful solution.”
Einstein statement on “If I was given one hour to save the planet, I would spend 59 minutes
defining the problem and one minute resolving it” was a very deep statement to the core I say. I
say this because knowing the problem at hand is easy to see because its right in front of you but
getting the parts to fix the problem is a search. See in problem solving there are many ways to
getting to the big fix to solve it. First you have to Identify the issues then be clear about what the
problem is, then Understand everyone’s interests or your own, then List the possible solutions
and Alternative Solutions, then Select an option or options if there is more than one person, and
last see the possibilities solution in the end. I believe through the steps that’s are giving by me
there can be problem within the problem just off rushing the solution. But a well thought out
problem solving process is a great solution at the end of the tunnel.
Like in coaching there are problem within the sport you coach all the time. Theses problem may
come within days, month, minutes, or even seconds. Like for an example when I was coaching
here at Siena for our football team. There was more player then coaches as you can tell but the
problem was (in season only) we could have coaches coaching outside there coaching position
and telling other players that they don’t coach everyday harder ways to solve a playing problem
on the field (Identify the issues). What I mean by this is I was the defensive backs coach and one
of my players was having a hard time getting their fits wrong in the play was were trying to stop.
So to help my player fix his problem I told him an easy key fix and he got the fit right the next
play for the rest of the practice. After practice I asked my player how did that key read help and
he said he loved it (understand everyone’s interest). But then I had one of my coaches on the
stuff come up to him and told him to do it another way to help one of his players out that was
struggling. So my player told me and the next day in the pre-practice meeting with all the
coaches I asked my fellow staff member did he tell one of our player to do the fit a different way,
then what I told him and he said say and explained why. So then I suggest a equal solution to
help both players out and he did as well (list possible solutions) As a staff together we all agreed
on my solution because it help both players in there fits on the field (Select an option). When we
played that Saturday, as we seen that play we practiced all week shown by the other team we
stopped it for the game winning stop by doing it the way we as a stuff agreed to. (see the
possibility solution)

Question 2: Deciding how to decide

Which “Decision support tools” have you utilized in the past?
Please provide an example of “Cognitive Bias”
The “decision support tool” I used in my professional setting of assistant coaching college
football is case-based decision analysis. I say this because a coach I was faced with situations
where a player had did something I did when I was playing or even something he did that I have
been through in my past and help him off experience so he would fail. But I can say everything
that worked for me in the past may not work for my player but may help him get through the
situation at hand. I feel this tool I use a lot also in my day to day life because there isn’t a better
teacher then life experiences and when you can help others off similar actions is a blessing.
Confirmation bias is to me the mother of all biases. It’s our tendency to bury our heads in the
sand and selectively interpret information that confirms our prior beliefs. What I mean by this is
basically it’s a male or female psychology misjudgment. However just like liking/ loving
someone. I say this because from my understanding cognitive bias will make people ignore facts
or faults of a person or object. Like for example we all may like/love our mothers. Still this bias
can put a blur on the facts or faults that they may be hurting or mistreating us. Since we like/love
our mother so much we may ignore the fact that she truly mistreats us.

Question 3: Provide an example of using Linear or Creative Problem solving, in order to

solve a "real world" issue.
An example of creative problem solving in order to solving a real world issue would be, a city
wants to improve its quality of life by changing the design of neighborhoods to be safe,
stimulating, healthy, resilient and clean. They begin by asking for as many ideas as possible from
city residents and urban design experts with no constraints such as budget. By that happening
and taking action the neighborhoods will become better then what it was. P.S: this happened
where I am from in Cleveland Ohio.
