Cyber Security for the Electrical Grid

and Smart Grid Applications

Unconventional Threats to Security

Energy Sector, Electric Utilities, Gas and Oil companies need to rethink what Cyber Security
means when it comes to the Electrical Grid, Smart Grid applications, and Asset Management
tools. Cyber Security in the current environment must be addressed with a new vision; the type
of the present and future cyber-attacks has different goals and driven by different motivations
than the classical cyber worms and viruses.

Why the Industry should Care?

Cyber-attacks are not about money or greed anymore; on the contrary, it is a bout causing the
maximum damage and destruction. Traditional IT training lacks the knowledge of the power
systems, power electronics, telecommunication layers, wireless protocols for the power
system, smart grid, and the gird topology. The new introduction of Smart Grid, Renewable,
Smart Device, and the communication Infrastructures will certainly be needed but challenging.
