CHAPTER 1

THE STUDY AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

Everyone has music, it can be different from one person to another (Titon, 2009).

From the fast ages of men to the current modern era of technology, music has been a part

of human life. There are a ton of brainy benefits an individual can derive for listening to

classical music, from physical to mental benefits, even as far to as treating medical

conditions (Neuman, 2016).

One of the benefits of these are, decreasing blood pressure, improving

productivity, treats anxiety and depression, and even boosting nerves and brainpower.

Utilizing this form of enhancer has been studied all around the world, a study conducted

by (Kumar, 2016) conducted that listening to classical music had strong relationship

between positive self, perception, self-esteem, confidence and study motivation.

Therefore, improving results on academic tests conducted by researchers.

Stanford Researchers in 2007, illustrated the effects of listening to the symphonies

of the 18th century composes, that showed music engages the areas of the brain involved

in paying attention.

However, studies conducted has rejected this conclusion and suggested otherwise,

according to Davis (2016), loud and agitated music can have negative music to reading

comprehension, decreases focus level, and students may find it difficult to recall

information. Another research conducted by Wales Institute in Cardiff says, listening to

music while studying can damage performance on certain study tasks and participants
performed must while listening. Though the study does not necessarily contradict

previous findings, it does suggest some limitations on the benefits of music in memory

(Perhan and Vizard, 2010)

There are more factors affecting focus (Schwartzbard, 2010) such as poor diet and

nutrition, lack of sleep, stress and environment. And even more factors contributing

improving academic performance (Van Deer Veer and Valsiver, 1991), like student’s

attitude towards study, self-efficacy and motivation, and strategic studying techniques.

Improving academic scores on tests has been the vital role of education in our

society and a plethora of methods has been utilized by teachers increasing the amount of

assignments, adding more school hours, more time allotted for study only scratches the

surface.

In Agusan del Sur National High School, more school works and more subjects

are added as the school progresses, and in order to compensate for these additions, study

time becomes exponentially greater which students highly disagrees on. With their

knowledge, this serves as the researcher’s motivation to conduct the study. Improving

academic performance by utilizing the empowerment of technology and music.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine if exposing Grade 12 STEM Students to classical

music will improve academic performance. Specifically, the study sought to answer the

following questions:

1. Does the amount of time exposed to classical music has an effect to academic

performance?

2. Does studying while listening to classical music has a positive effect on academic

performance?

Null Hypothesis

Based on the problems above, the following hypothesis are made:

1. The amount of time exposed to classical music does not have an effect to

academic performance.

2. Studying while listening to classical music does not have a positive effect on

academic performance.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The result of this study is beneficial to the following:

To the learners, as the recipient of learning and center, listening to classical music is

acceptable as it would help students focus better during class, and would prevent any

cause of mental problems due to school works.

To the teachers, as the facilitators of the classes, allowing the students to listen to

classical music during class hours is not acceptable as it would disturb the flow of the

discussion, which may hinder the attention of students to the music instead of the

discussion.

To the parents, as the guidance of the students, allowing the students to listen to

classical music after classes is acceptable as it would help it calm their minds after a long

tough day at school.

1.5 Scope and Delimitations

In general, the focus of the study is directed towards the effects of listening

classical music to a student’s academic performance in Grade 12 STEM students of

Agusan del Sur National High School. This involves a survey for those students who

listens and doesn’t listen to classical music. The selection of the respondents is randomly

selected within Grade 12 STEM students of Agusan del Sur National High School only

from July 2019 to August 2019. The study is largely dependent on the honesty, integrity

and sincerity of the respondents.

This research is designed to have a knowledge to the effects of listening and not

listening to classical music to the student’s academic performance. Other factors not

mentioned are beyond the scope of this study.

1.6 Definition of Terms

The following terms are theoretically and operationally defined for better

understanding of the study.

Classical Music – This refers to the medium that some students listen to as a part for

relaxation after a long day at school

Senior High - It refers to a DepEd new curriculum of K-12 that stretches over 2

academic years composed of 2 semesters each.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) - A curriculum based on

the idea of education students in four specific disciplines, interdisciplinary and applied

approach. It integrates into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world

applications.

Teacher - It refers to a person who became the second mother of students in school and

the one who teach students by the use of technology.
