Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of technology that deals with design,
construction, control and operation of a robot. A simple robot is a machine that is
embedded with a sensor, a processor and end effectors whose application may vary
depending upon its connected sensors, end effectors and information processing.

Intelligent fire fighting robot

The robot has a temperature/light sensor as its sensing element for fire and a water
sprayer and motors as its end effectors. The robot is capable of detecting the event of
fire, trace the exact location of fire and spraying the water to the detected location.
The control commands to the end effectors based on the sensory feedbacks are given
by the Atmega128 processor.

Wireless surveillance robot

The surveillance robot can be used for both commercial and defence purposes. The
robot consists of an onboard wireless camera that can stream sequence of images
through zigbee protocol. The actuators of the robot can be remotely controlled by
establishing Bluetooth connection between the processor and the controlling joystick.

Pneumatic powered robotic crane:

The robot is a miniature working model of an industry standard crane whose arm
movements are actuated by the pneumatic linear actuators. The robot has one circular
degree of freedom provided by the vertically mounted DC motor and three degree of
freedom provided by the linear actuators. The robot navigation is achieved through
the differential drive of the horizontal DC motors.

Pick and place robot

The robot has an onboard arm mechanism that act as a mechanical gripper to hold and
release the objects. The gripper movement is manually controlled by controlling the
actuator and the robot makes a differential motion to move from one point to another.

Miniaturized Mars rover

The dynamics of the robot is similar to the Mars rover- Curiosity. The robot has an
onboard wireless camera mounted on the servo drive which gives a 360 degree field
of view of the surroundings. The robot is powered with the 6 differential drive DC
motors which are controlled centrally by the Atmega128 processor.

Collision avoidance robot

The robot is mounted with the array of ultrasonic proximity sensors whose output is
monitored by the processor. When a sensor reads a value below its threshold, the
corresponding motor is actuated to make the robot turn towards a safer direction.

ii) Geomatics
Indian Geo spatial Market is on the verge of an enormous growth. Most Indian firms
in GIS are involved in the data collection, data capture and data conversion scenario.
The government is the biggest consumer of GIS applications and uses it actively.
India, with its diverse landscapes a perfect fit for a technology like GIS. This is
largely attained due to government focus on use of GIS and large initiatives like R-
APDRP and NLRMP but this is just the start. It is also estimated that private players
in infrastructure, telecom and other utilities are spending around Rs 50crore annually
on GIS products and services.

The notable industries that are offering GIS services

ANNOVA Technologies Pvt. Ltd, CGC Converse Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Geosoft
Technologies, IN-RIMT, RSI Softech India Pvt. Ltd, Infotech Enterprises etc., several
hundreds of industries are doing outsourcing jobs in the applications of Map
generation, Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, insurance companies etc. The
industries prefer trained candidates in the field of GIS instead of recruit and train.

Page 14
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

promoting specialized knowledge in the field of mobile technology, and developing

various educational applications. Mobile application development is similar to Web
application development and has its roots in more traditional software development.
One critical difference, however, is that mobile applications (apps) are often written
specifically to take advantage of the unique features a particular mobile device offers.
For instance, a gaming app might be written to take advantage of the iPhone's
accelerometer. One way to ensure that applications show optimum performance on a
given device is to develop the application (app) natively on that device. This means
that at a very low level, the code is written specifically for the processor in a
particular device. When an app needs to run on multiple operating systems, however,
there is little -- if any -- code that can be reused from the initial development. The
application must essentially be rewritten for each specific device.

D) Incubation Centers

i) Software Research Development

Software development is an important activity. In order to harness the skills
of Computer Science and Information Technology students in software development,
two batches of students were selected for training. Initially the students were given
training in software engineering, .net, SPM etc., subjects. The students were asked to
develop the projects on Automatic Attendance System which has many implications.
Students with background in ECE were asked to develop scanners and others with
background in computer science to develop data base applications on the data
collected. The students of these two batches have successfully completed in-house
projects. These projects were also part and parcel of their B. Tech dissertations.

ii) Big Data

Big data is a term for data sets that are so large or complex that
traditional data processing application software is inadequate to deal with them.
Challenges include capture, storage, analysis, data curation, search, sharing, transfer,
visualization, querying, and updating and information privacy. To engage and train
the students in Big Data GNIT CSE has established Big Data Centre of Excellence, so
that they can gain employment as Data Scientist, Web Analyst and Big Data

Grading procedure
 Student earns grade point (GP) in each subject/ course on the basis of the letter grade
secured in that subject/ course. The corresponding credit points (CP) are computed by
multiplying the grade point with credits for that particular subject/ course.

Credit points (CP) = grade point (GP) x credits …. For a course

 The student passes the subject/ course only when GP ≥ 5 (‘C’ grade or above)
 The semester grade point average (SGPA) is calculated by dividing the sum of credit
points (ΣCP) secured from all subjects/ courses registered in a semester, by the total
number of credits registered during that semester. SGPA is rounded off to two
decimal places. SGPA is thus computed as
N N
SGPA = { Ci Gi }/{ Ci } …. For each semester,
i 1 i 1

where ‘i’ is the subject indicator index (takes into account all subjects in a semester),
‘N’ is the no. of subjects ‘registered’ for the semester (as specifically required and
listed under the course structure of the parent department), Ci is the no. of credits
allotted to the ith subject, and Gi represents the grade points (GP) corresponding to the
letter grade awarded for that ith subject.
 The cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is a measure of the overall cumulative
performance of a student in all semesters considered for registration. The CGPA is the
ratio of the total credit points secured by a student in all registered courses in all
semesters, and the total number of credits registered in all the semesters. CGPA is
rounded off to two decimal places. CGPA is thus computed from the I year II
semester onwards at the end of each semester as per the formula
M M
CGPA = {  C j G j }/{  C j } … for all S semesters registered
j 1 j 1

(i.e., up to and inclusive of S semesters, S ≥ 2),

where ‘M’ is the total no. of subjects (as specifically required and listed under the
course structure of the parent department) the student has ‘registered’ i.e., from the
1st semester onwards up to and inclusive of the 8th semester, ‘j’ is the subject
indicator index (takes 12into account all subjects from 1 to 8 semesters), Cj is the no.
of credits allotted to the jth subject, and Gj represents the grade points (GP)
corresponding to the letter grade awarded for that jth subject. After registration and
completion of first year first semester, the SGPA of that semester itself may be taken
as the CGPA, as there are no cumulative effects.

Passing standards
 A student shall be declared successful or ‘passed’ in a semester, if student secures a
GP ≥ 5 (‘C’ grade or above) in every subject/course in that semester (i.e. when
student gets an SGPA ≥ 5.00 at the end of that particular semester); and a student
shall be declared successful or passed in the entire under graduate programme, only
when a student gets a CGPA ≥ 5.00 for the award of the degree as required.
 After the completion of each semester, a grade card or grade sheet (or transcript) shall
be issued to all the registered students of that semester, indicating the letter grades and
credits earned. It will show the details of the courses registered (course code, title, no.
of credits, and grade earned etc.), credits earned, SGPA, and CGPA.

Declaration of results
 Computation of SGPA and CGPA are done using the procedure listed above.
 For final percentage of marks equivalent to the computed final CGPA, the following
formula may be used % of Marks = (final CGPA – 0.5) x 10
