MISSION TO CRACK APPLICATION SUMS - TIME AND WORK

What is Work?

Technically Work is the quantity of energy transferred from one system to another but for question based on
this topic, Work is defined as the amount of job assigned or the amount of job actually done.

Analogy with Time – Speed – Distance:

Problem on work are based on the application of concept of ratio of time and speed. Work is always
considered as a whole or one. There exists an analogy between the time-speed-distance problems and work.

Above mentioned definition of work throws light on three important points.

a) Work = 1 (It is always measured as a whole) = Distance

b) Rate at which work is done = speed

c) Number of days required to do the work = Time

Important Formulae:

Work from Days:

If A can do a piece of work in n days, then A's 1 day's work = 1/n

Days from Work:

If A's 1 day's work =1/n, then A can finish the work in n days

Ratio:

1. If A is thrice as good a workman as B, then:

a) Ratio of work done by A and B to finish the work = 3 : 1

b) Ratio of times taken by A and B to finish the work = 1 : 3

2. If A is x times as good as a workman B, then he will take (1/x)th of the time by B to do the same work.

3. A and B can do a piece of work in ‘a’ days and ‘b’ days respectively, then working together they will take
[xy/(x + y)] days to finish the work and in one day, they will finish [(x + y)/xy]th part of the work.

4. If P1 persons working H1 hours a day can complete W1 units of work in D1 Days and P2 persons working
H2 hours a day can complete W2 units of work in D2 Days then

MISSION TO CRACK APPLICATION SUMS - PIPES AND CISTERNS

Inlet: A pipe connected with a tank or cistern or a reservoir, that fills it, is known as an inlet.

Outlet: A pipe connected with a tank or cistern or reservoir, emptying it is known as an outlet.

Important Concepts

a) If a pipe can fill a tank in x hours, part filled in 1 hour = 1/x.

b) If a pipe can fill a tank in x hours and another pipe in y hours, part of tank filled in 1 hour when both the
pipes are opened simultaneously = (1/x + 1/y) = ( x+y)/xy

Therefore, Time taken to fill the tank by both the pipes when opened simultaneously = xy/(x+y)

c) If a pipe can empty a tank in "y" hours, then tank emptied in 1 hour = 1/y

d) If a pipe can empty a tank in y hours and another pipe in x hours, part of tank emptied in 1 hour when both
the pipes are opened simultaneously = (1/x + 1/y) = (x+y)/xy

Therefore, Time taken to empty the tank by both the pipes when opened simultaneously = xy/(x+y)

e) If a pipe can fill a tank in x hours and another pipe can empty the full tank in y hours (where y > x), then on
opening both the pipes, the net part filled in 1 hour = 1/x - 1/y = (y - x)/xy

Therefore, When both the pipes are opened simultaneously, time taken to fill the tank fully = xy/(y - x) hours.

f) If a pipe can fill a tank in x hours and another pipe can empty the full tank in y hours (where x > y), then on
opening both the pipes, the net part emptied in 1 hour = 1/y - 1/x = (x - y)/xy

Therefore, When both the pipes are open simultaneously, time taken to empty the tank fully = xy/(x - y) hours.

Type 1 – Based on Two persons

1. A sum of money is sufficient to pay P’s wages for 25 days or Q’s wages for 30 days. The money is
sufficient to pay the wages of both for

Solution:

If A can complete a work in x days and B can complete the same work in y days, then, both of them together
can complete the work in x y/ x+ y days.

Here, wages can be taken as days,

Then, 25 ×30/ 55 = 13 7/11 days.

2. Ravi and Kumar are working on an assignment. Ravi takes 6 hours to type 32 pages on a computer,
while Kumar takes 5 hours to type 40 pages. How much time will they take, working together on two
different computers to type an assignment of 110 pages?

Solution:

3. Xavier can do a job in 40 days. He worked on it for 5 days and then Paes finished it in 21 days. In
how many days Xavier and Paes can finish the work?

Solution:

Xavier’s one day’s work = 1/40

His 5 days work = 1/40 × 5 = 1/8

The work remaining = 1 – 1/8 = 7/8

7/8 of the work is done by Paes in 21 days

Then, his 1 day’s work = (7/8)/21 = 7/(21 × 8) = 1/24

Therefore, the time taken by Paes to finish the whole work = 24 days.

Then. The No. of days two of them together take to finish the work = 40 × 24/(40 + 24)

= 40 × 24/64 = 15 days.

4. A alone can complete a work in 5 days more than A+B together and B alone can complete a work in
45 days more than A+B together. Then in how many days A and B together can complete the work?

Solution:

Shortcut = √(5×45) = 15

OR

Let (A+B) can do in x days, so

1/(x+5) + 1/(x+45) = 1/x

Solve, x2 = 225, x = 15

Type 2 – Based on Three persons (Individual data)

1. A can do a particular work in 6 days. B can do the same work in 8 days. A and B signed to do it for
Rs. 3200. They completed the work in 3 days with the help of C. How much is to be paid to C?

Solution:

www.ibpsguide.com | mock.ibpsguide.in | www.sscexamguide.com

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
Amount of work A can do in 1 day = 1/6

Amount of work B can do in 1 day = 1/8

Amount of work A + B can do in 1 day = 1/6 + 1/8 = 7/24

Amount of work A + B + C can do = 1/3

Amount of work C can do in 1 day = 1/3 - 7/24 = 1/24

Work A can do in 1 day: work B can do in 1 day: work C can do in 1 day = 1/6 : 1/8 : 1/24 = 4 : 3 : 1

Amount to be paid to C = 3200 × (1/8) = 400

2. Machine P can print one lakh books in 8 hours. Machine Q can print the same number of books in 10
hours while machine R can print the same in 12 hours. All the machines started printing at 9 A.M.
Machine P is stopped at 11 A.M. and the remaining two machines complete work. Approximately at
what time will the printing of one lakh books be completed?

Solution:

Work done by P in 1 hour = 1/8

Work done by Q in 1 hour = 1/10

Work done by R in 1 hour = 1/12

Work done by P,Q and R in 1 hour = 1/8 + 1/10 + 1/12 = 37/120

Work done by Q and R in 1 hour = 1/10 + 1/12 = 22/120 = 11/6

From 9 am to 11 am, all the machines were operating.

i.e, they all operated for 2 hours and work completed = 2 × (37/120) = 37/60

Pending work = 1- 37/60 = 23/60

Hours taken by Q an R to complete the pending work = (23/60) / (11/60) = 23/11 which is approximately
equal to 2

Hence the work will be completed approximately 2 hours after 11 am ; i.e around 1 pm

3. Chandra, Venky and Himu take Rs. 535 for doing a work together. If each takes 5, 6 and 7 days
respectively to complete the work when working alone, what will be the share of Chandra?

Solution:

The share of the three will be in the share of inverse of their number of days of completion of work, that is in
the ratio of 1/5: 1/6: 1/7.

Multiplying each of the member of the ratio by 210, the LCM of 5, 6, and 7, we get the ratio of the share as,
42 : 35 : 30. Let as assume the ratio to be, 42x: 35x: 30x

So the total share = 107x = Rs.535 => x = Rs.5

www.ibpsguide.com | mock.ibpsguide.in | www.sscexamguide.com

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
Therefore Chandra’s share 42x = Rs.210

Type 3 – Based on Three persons (Combined data)

1. P and Q can do a work in 30 days. Q and R can do the same work in 24 days and R and P in 20 days.
They started the work together, but Q and R left after 10 days. How many days more will P take to
finish the work?

Solution:

Let work done by P in 1 day = p, Work done by Q in 1 day = q, Work done by R in 1 day = r

p + q = 1/30; q + r = 1/24; r + p = 1/20

Adding all the above, 2p + 2q + 2r = 1/30 + 1/24+ 1/20 = 15/120 = 1/8 => p + q + r = 1/16

=> Work done by P,Q and R in 1 day = 1/16

Work done by P, Q and R in 10 days = 10 × (1/16) = 10/16 = 5/8

Remaining work = 1 = 5/8 = 3/8

Work done by P in 1 day = Work done by P,Q and R in 1 day - Work done by Q and R in 1 day = 1/16 – 1/24
= 1/48

Number of days P needs to work to complete the remaining work = (3/8) / (1/48) = 18

2. A and B together can do a piece of work in 12 days, which B and C together can do in 16 days. After
A has been working at it for 5 days and B for 7 days, C finishes it in 13 days. In how many days C alone
will do the work?

Solution:

According to the question,

A + B’s 1 day’s work = 1/12

B+ C’s 1 days’ work = 1/16

A worked for 5 days, B for 7 days and C for 13 days. So, we can assume that,

A+ B has been working for 5 days and B+ C has been working for 2 days and C alone for 11 days.

i.e. A’s 5 day’s work + B’s 7 day’s work + C’s 13 day’s work = 1

(A+ B)’s 5 days work + (B + C)’s 2 days work + C’s 11 day’s work = 1

5/12 + 2/16 + C’s 11 days work = 1

So, C’s 11 day’s work = 1 – (5/12 + 2/16) = 11/24

C’s 1 days’ work = 11/24/11 = 1/24

Therefore, C alone can finish the work in 24 days.

www.ibpsguide.com | mock.ibpsguide.in | www.sscexamguide.com

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
3. A and B can do a piece of work in 12 days; B and C can do it in 15 days and C and A can do it in 20
days. A alone can do the work in:

Solution:

2 (A + B + c)’s 1 day’s work = 1/12 + 1/15 + 1/20 = 12/60 = 1/5

A + B + C’s 1 day’s work = 1/5/2 = 1/10

A’s 1 day’s work = 1/10 – (B + C)’s 1 day’s work = 1/10 – 1/15 = 1/30

Therefore, A alone can finish the work in 30 days.

Type 4 – Based on Efficiency

1. A takes twice as much time as B or thrice as much time as C to finish a piece of work. Working
together, they can finish the work in 2 days. B can do the work alone in:

Solution:

2. A is thrice as good as workman as B and therefore is able to finish a job in 60 days less than B.
Working together, they can do it in:

Solution:

Ratio of times taken by A and B = 1 : 3.

The time difference is (i.e., 3 – 1) 2 days while B take 3 days and A takes 1 day.

If difference of time is 2 days, B takes 3 days.

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com

3. A is 30% more efficient than B. How much time will they, working together, take to complete a job
which A alone could have done in 23 days?

Solution:

Ratio of times taken by A and B = 100: 130 = 10 : 13.

Suppose B takes x days to do the work.

(A + B)’s 1 day’s work = (1/23 + 10/299) = 23/299 = 1/13.

Therefore, A and B together can complete the work in 13 days.

4. Sakshi can do a piece of work in 20 days. Tanya is 25% more efficient than Sakshi. The number of
days taken by Tanya to do the same piece of work is:

Solution:

Ratio of times taken by Sakshi and Tanya = 125: 100 = 5: 4.

Suppose Tanya takes x days to do the work  5: 4 :: 20: x  x = 4*20 / 5  x = 16 days

Hence, Tanya takes 16 days to complete the work.

5. A works twice as fast as B. If B can complete a work in 12 days independently, the number of days in
which A and B can together finish the work in:

Solution:

Type 5 – Based on Men or Women

1. If daily wages of a man is double to that of a woman, how many men should work for 25 days to earn
Rs.14400? Given that wages for 40 women for 30 days are Rs.21600.

Solution:

Wages of 1 woman for 1 day = 21600/(40 × 30)

Wages of 1 man for 1 day = (21600 × 2)/(40 × 30)

Wages of 1 man for 25 days = (21600 × 2× 25)/(40 × 30)

14400 144 144
Number of men = 21600 ×2 ×25 = 216 ×50 = = 16
9
40 ×30 40 ×30

2. 25 men worked together for 16 days to get a wage of Rs.11500. How many women must work
together for 48 days to receive a wage of Rs.31050, if daily a woman receives half the wage of a man?

Solution:

Daily wage of a man = Rs. 11500/(25 × 16) = Rs.115/4

Daily wage of a woman being half that of a man, it is, Rs.115/8

So to receive Rs.31050 in 48 days, the number of women working would be=31050/(48 ×115/8)=1035/23= 45

3. Six men or ten boys can do a piece of work in fifteen days. How long would it take for 12 men and 5
boys to do the same piece of work?

Solution:

6 men = 10 boys

Then, 1 boy = 6/10 men = 3/5 men

Then, 5 boys = 3/5 × 5 = 3 men

12 men + 5 boys = 15 men

1 work done = 6 men × 15 days

www.ibpsguide.com | mock.ibpsguide.in | www.sscexamguide.com

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
Therefore, 6 × 15 = 15 × ? days

? days = 6 × 15/15 = 6 days.

Type 6 – Based on Group work

1. 9 children can complete a piece of work in 360 days. 18 men can complete the same piece of work in
72 days and 12 women can complete the piece of work in 162 days. In how many can 4 men, 12 women
and 10 children together complete the piece of work?

Solution:

1 child’s 1 day’s work = 1/360 ×9 = 1/3240

10 children’s 1 day’s work = 1/324

1 man’s 1 day’s work = 1/72 × 18 = 1/1296

4 men’s 1 day’s work = 1 ×4/1296 = 1/324

12 women’s 1 day’s work = 1/162 given

Then, (4 men + 12 women + 10 children)’s 1 day’s work = 1/324 + 1/162 + 1/324

= 1/324 + 2/324 + 1/324 = 4/324 = 1/81

Therefore, the required No. of days = 81 days.

2. 12 men can complete a piece of work in 36 days. 18 women can complete the same piece of work in 60
days. 8 men and 20 women work together for 20 days. If only women were to complete the remaining
piece of work in 4 days, how many women would be required?

Solution:

12 men in 36 days can do a work.

1 man in a day can do 1/ (12×36) work.

8 men in 20 days can do 8×20/ (12×36) = 10/ 27 work.

Similarly, we find that 20 women in 20 days can do 10/ 27 work.

Remaining work = 7/ 27

Now, in 60 days a work is done by 20 women.

In 1 day a work done by 20×60 women.

In 4 days 7/ 27 work is done by 20×60×7/ (27×4) = 70 women.

3. The work done by a man, a woman and a child is in the ratio of 3 : 2 : 1. There are 20 men, 30 women
and 48 children in a factory. Their weekly wages amount to Rs 840, which is divided in the ratio of
work done by the men, women and children. What will be the wages of 15 men, 21 women and 30
children for 2 weeks?

www.ibpsguide.com | mock.ibpsguide.in | www.sscexamguide.com

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
Solution:

Ratio of wages of 20 men, 30 women and 48 children per week = 3*20 : 2*30 : 1*48 = 5: 5: 4

Total wages of 20 men per week = 5/14 * 840 = Rs. 300

Therefore, wages of a man per week = Rs. 15,

Similarly, wages of woman per week = Rs. 10 and wages of child per week = Rs. 5

Total wages of (15 men, 21 women and 30 children) per week = 15*15 + 21*10 + 30*5 = 585

Total wages for 2 weeks = Rs. 1170.

4. 8 men can complete a piece of work in 4 days. 12 women can complete the same piece of work in 4
days whereas 8 children can complete the same piece of work in 8 days. 2 men, 8 children and 3 women
work together for 2 days. If only women were to finish the remaining work in 2 days, how many total
women would be required?

Solution:

8 men can complete a piece of work in 4 days

 1 man can complete the work in 8×4 = 32 days (because number of days is inversely proportional to
number of persons working)

 Work done by 1 man in 1 day = 1/32

12 women can complete the same piece of work in 4 days

 1 woman can complete the work in 12×4 = 48 days

 Work done by 1 woman in 1 day = 1/48

8 children can complete the same piece of work in 8 days

 1 child can complete the work in 8×8 = 64 days

 Work done by 1 child in 1 day = 1/64

Work done by 2 men, 8 children and 3 women in 2 days =2(2×1/32+8×1/64+3×1/48)

= 2(1/16+1/8+1/16)=1/2

Remaining work = 1−1/2=1/2

Suppose n women complete this work in 2 days.

Then, n×1/48×2 =1/2  n =12

5. 8 men and 4 women together can complete a piece of work in 6 days. Work done by a man in one day
is double the work done by a woman in one day. If 8 men and 4 women started working and after 2
days, 4 men left and 4 new women joined, in how many more days will the work be completed?

Solution:

www.ibpsguide.com | mock.ibpsguide.in | www.sscexamguide.com

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
Let work done by 1 man in 1 day = 2x

work done by 1 woman in 1 day = x

8 men and 4 women together can complete a piece of work in 6 days.

Work done by 8 men and 4 women in 1 day =1/6

⇒ 8×2x+4x=1/6 ⇒ 20x=1/6⇒x=1/120

8 men and 4 women worked for 2 days.

Work completed =1/6 × 2 = 1/3

Pending work =1−1/3=2/3

Then 4 men left and 4 new women joined them.

i.e., 4 men and 8 women worked and completed the work.

Work done by 4 men and 8 women in 1 day = 4 * 2x+8 * x=16x=16/120=2/15

Required number of days =(2/3) / (2/15) = 5

6. The work done by women in 10 hours is equal to the work done by a man in 8 hours and by a boy in
12 hours. If working 8 hours per day 12 men can complete a work in 6 days then in how many days can
8 men, 15 women and 18 boys together finish the same work working 10 hours per day?

Solution:

8M = 10W = 12B

8M + 15W + 18B ⇒ 8M + 12M + 12M ⇒ 32M

12M × 6 × 8 = 32M × ? × 10  ? = 1 4/5 days

Type 7 – Partial work

1. P, Q and R can do a work in 20, 30 and 60 days respectively. How many days does it need to complete
the work if P does the work and he is assisted by Q and R on every third day?

Solution:

Amount of work P can do in 1 day = 1/20

Amount of work Q can do in 1 day = 1/30

Amount of work R can do in 1 day = 1/60

P is working alone and every third day Q and R is helping him

Work completed in every three days = 2 × (1/20) + (1/20 + 1/30 + 1/60) = 1/5

So work completed in 15 days = 5 × 1/5 = 1

i.e, the work will be done in 15 days

www.ibpsguide.com | mock.ibpsguide.in | www.sscexamguide.com
BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
2. There is a group of persons each of whom can complete a piece of work in 16 days, when they are
working individually. On the first day one person works, on the second day another person joins him,
on the third day one more person joins them and this process continues till the work is completed. How
many days are needed to complete the work?

Solution:

Work completed in 1st day = 1/16

Work completed in 2nd day = (1/16) + (1/16) = 2/16

Work completed in 3rd day = (1/16) + (1/16) + (1/16) = 3/16

An easy way to attack such problems is from the choices. You can see the choices are very close to each
other. So just see one by one.

For instance, The first choice given in 3 1⁄4

The work done in 3 days = 1/16 + 2/16 + 3/16 = (1+2+3)/16 = 6/16

The work done in 4 days = (1+2+3+4)/16 = 10/16

The work done in 5 days = (1+2+3+4+5)/16 = 15/16, almost close, isn't it?

The work done in 6 days = (1+2+3+4+5+6)/16 > 1

Hence the answer is less than 6, but greater than 5. Hence the answer is 5 1⁄6 days.

3. Pintu, Bittu and Bonku undertake to do a work for Rs.6400. Pintu and Bittu worked together to
finish 25% of the work. Bonku then took up the work and finished the rest of it alone. How much will
Bonku get?

Solution:

Pintu and Bittu finished 25% of the work and so received 25% of the contracted amount of money, which is
Rs.1600. As Bonku finished the rest of the work alone, he must take away rest of the contracted amount, that
is,

Rs.6400 – Rs.1600 = Rs.4800

4. Ashish can do 400% of a work in 24 days while Srinath can do 50% of the same work in 2 days. Find
the time required to complete 200% of the work, if both are working together.

Solution:

Ashish → 400% → 24 days

Ashish → 100% (or 1 work) → 6 days

Ashish → 200% → 12 days

Srinath → 50% → 2 days

Srinath → 100% → 4 days

www.ibpsguide.com | mock.ibpsguide.in | www.sscexamguide.com

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
Srinath → 200% → 8 days

(1 / 12) + (1 / 8) = 5 / 24

Hence, no. of days = 24 / 5 = 4(4 / 5) days

Type 8 – Alternating work

1. A & B working alone can do a work in 9 and 12 days respectively. If they work for a day alternately,
A beginning, in how many days the work will be completed?

Solution:

Let's take the least common multiple for these 2work rates - The LCM is 36.

Assume they have to create 36 items each.

A can complete 4 in a day (36/9)

B can complete 3 in a day (36/12)

Since the sequence starts with A, they can complete 35 items in 10 days (4+3+4+3+4+3+4+3+4+3).

Since it's A's turn next, he can complete 1 item in 1/4 day

Therefore, total- 10+1/4 = 41/4

2. A alone can complete a work in 16 days and B alone can do in 12 days. Starting with A, they work on
alternate days. The total work will be completed in

Solution:

A's 1 day work = 1/16

B's 1 day work = 1/12

As they are working on alternate days.

So their 2 days work = (1/16) + (1/12) = 7/48

[here is a small technique, Total work done will be 1, right, then multiply numerator till denominator, as 7*6 =
42, 7*7 = 49, as 7*7 is more than 48, so we will consider 7*6, means 6 pairs ]

Work done in 6 pairs = 6*(7/48) = 7/8

Remaining work = 1-7/8 = 1/8

On 13th day it will A turn, Then remaining work = (1/8)-(1/16) = 1/16

On 14th day it is B turn, 1/12 work done by B in 1 day

1/16 work will be done in (12*1/16) = 3/4 day

So total days = 13 3/4

1. Fifty six men can complete a piece work in 24 days. In how many days can 42 men complete the same
piece of work?

Solution:

56 men can complete 1 work in 24 days.

∴ 1 men complete the work in 24 × 56 days.

∴ 42 men will do the same work in 24 * 56 / 42 = 32 days

Alternative method: ∴ M1D1 = M2D2

∴ 56 × 24 = 42 × D2

 D2 = 56 * 24 / 42 = 32 days.

2. 6 men and 8 women can complete a work in 10 days. 26 men and 48 women can finish the same work
in 2 days. 15 men and 20 women can do the same work in - days.

Solution:

Let work done by 1 man in 1 day = m and work done by 1 woman in 1 day = b

Work done by 6 men and 8 women in 1 day = 1/10

=> 6m + 8b = 1/10

=> 60m + 80b = 1 --- (1)

Work done by 26 men and 48 women in 1 day = 1/2

=> 26m + 48b = ½ => 52m + 96b = 1--- (2)

Solving equation 1 and equation 2, We get m = 1/100 and b = 1/200

Work done by 15 men and 20 women in 1 day

= 15/100 + 20/200 =1/4

=> Time taken by 15 men and 20 women in doing the work = 4 days

Type 10 – Pipes and Cisterns

1. Two pipes A and B can fill a tank in 24 hours and 30 hours separately. In the event that both the
channel are opened all the while in the void tank, the amount of the truth will surface eventually taken
by them to fill it?

Solution:

Part filled by A in 1 hour = 1/24, part filled by B in 1 hour = 1/30

Part filled by (A+B) in 1 hour = (1/24+ 1/30) = 9/120 = 3/40

Time taken by both to fill the tank = 40/3 hrs = 13 hrs 20 min.

2. Funnels A and B can fill a tank in 6 hours and 9 hours individually and channel C can purge it in 12
hours. On the off chance that every one of the funnels is opened together in the vacant tank in what
amount of the reality of the situation will become obvious eventually be full?

Solution:

Net part filled in 1 hour = (1/6+1/9+1/12) = 7/36

Thus, the tank will be full in 36/7 hrs.

3. Two pipes that pipe 1 and pipe 2 can fill a water reservoir in 36 hours and 45 hours respectively. If
both the pipes are simultaneously, how much time will be taken to fill the water reservoir?

Solution:

Here both pipes are filled so we can easily say it is a positive.

Step 1: So at first of we calculate fill pipe in 1 hour time taken

Pipe 1 + Pipe 2 together filled a water reservoir in 1 hour = (1 / 36 + 1 / 45) = 9 / 180 = 1 / 20

Step 2: So in 1 hour it fill with 1 / 20

Hence time taken both the pipe 1 and pipe 2 will fill the water reservoir in 20 hours.

4. There is two types Pipes, Pipe 1 and Pipe 2 can fill a water reservoir in 3 and 6 hours respectively.
Pipe 3 can empty it in 12 hours. If all the three pipes are opened together, then the water reservoir will
be filled in:

Solution:

Net part filled in 1 hour = (1/3 + 1/6 – 1/12) = 5/12

The water reservoir will be full in 12/15 hours

5. Two funnels can fill a reservoir in 14 hours and 16 hours individually. The channels are opened all
the while and it is found that because of spillage in the base it took 32 minutes more to fill the reservoir.
Once the reservoir is full, in what time, spillage will discharge the full reservoir?

Solution:

Work done by the two funnels in 1 hour= (1/14+ 1/16) = 15/112

Time taken by these funnels to fill the tank = 112/15 hrs = 7 hrs 28 min

Because of spillage, time taken = 7 hrs. 28 min + 32 min = 8 hrs

Therefore, Work done by (two funnels + spill) in 1 hour = 1/8

Work done by the break in 1 hour = (15/112-1/8) = 1/112

Break will discharge the full reservoir in 8 hours.

6. A and B can fill a cistern in 7.5 minutes and 5 minutes respectively and C can carry off 14litres per
minute. If the cistern is already full and all the three pipes are opened, then it is emptied in 1hour. How
many litres can it hold?

Solution:

If the capacity is L litres,

Water filled in 1 hour = L/7.5*60 + L/5*60 = 20L

Water removed in 1 hour = 14*60

Since the tank was full initially, hence L + 20L – 14 * 60 = 0  L = 40 litres.

7. Tap A can fill a tank in 20 hour, tap B in 25 hour but tap C can empty a full tank in 30 hour. Starting
with A, followed by B and C, each tap is opened alternatively for 1 hour period till the tank get filled up
completely. In how many hours will the tank be filled up completely?

Solution:

LCM (20,25,30)=300

Suppose capacity of the tank is 300 litre.

Quantity filled by tap A in 1 hour = 300/20 = 15 litre.

Quantity filled by tap B in 1 hour = =300/25 = 12 litre.

Quantity emptied by tap C in 1 hour =300/30 = 10 litre.

In every three hour, 15+12−10=17 litre is filled.

In 45 hours, 17×15=255 litre is filled.

Remaining quantity to be filled =300−255=45 litre.

In next 3 hour, 17 more litre is filled.

Remaining quantity to be filled =45−17=28 litre.

In next 2 hour hour, 15+12=27 more litre is filled.

Remaining quantity to be filled =28−27=1 litre.

But in next 1 hour, 10 litre is emptied.

Remaining quantity to be filled =1+10=11 litre.

Pipe A fills this remaining quantity in 11/15 hour (i.e, in 44 minutes).

Therefore, the tank is filled in 51 hour 44 minutes

8. A cistern has two inlet pipes – A & B and one outlet pipe – C. Pipe A and B can fill the cistern in 20
and 25 hours respectively, while pipe C can empty it in 10 hours. First, pipe A was opened, after 1 hour

BASE INSTITUTE – NAMAKKAL | www.ibpsguide.com
pipe B was opened and after another 1 hour pipe C was opened. Find the time required to empty the
cistern completely.

Solution:

Efficiency of pipe A = 5%

Efficiency of pipe B = 4%

Efficiency of pipe c = 10%

In the first hour, work done = 5% [Pipe A only], in the 2nd hour, work done = 5 + 4 = 9% [Pipes A and B
both]

Total work done in 2 hours = 14% [i.e., 9% + 5%]

Combined efficiency of 3 pipes = 5 + 4 – 10 = -1%

(i.e.,) net effect is of emptying the tank;

So, 1% of tank is emptied in 1 hour.

Hence, 14% of tank would be emptied in 14 hours.

9. A tank can be filled in 2 (2 / 5) hours, when all the five pipes (including both inlet and outlet pipes)
are turned on simultaneously. Also it is given that each inlet pipe can fill the tank in 4 hours when
working separately and each outlet pipe can empty the tank in 6 hours, when working separately. How
many outlet pipes are attached to the tank?

Solution:

Work done in 1 hour by all five pipes = 1 / (12 / 5) = 5 / 12

Let there be ‘n’ inlet pipes, hence no. of outlet pipes = 5 – n

Now, (1 / 4) (n) – (1 / 6) (5 – n) = 5 / 12

(n / 4) – (5 / 6) + (n / 6) = 5 / 12

5n / 12 = (5 / 12) + (5 / 6) or 15 / 12

n = (12 × 15) / (12 × 5) = 3

Hence, there are 3 inlet and 2 outlet pipes.
