SCOUR DEPTH AND BEARING PRESSURE CALCULATION

The calculatioin presented here are for scour depth and bearing pressure calculation.
References have been made to IRC-78,2000 for these calculations.

Calculation of maximum scour level

High flood level = 202.452 m

Design discharge, Q = 4000 cum/sec

Lacey's wetted perimeter = 303.58 m

4.8*(sqrt(Q)
Linear waterway assumed = 200 m

Db = 20 m^2
discharge/ width

Ksf(silt factor) = 0.9

Mean scour depth, dsm = 10.21 m

1.34*(Db^2/Ksf)^1/3

Modified scour due to

restriction d' = 13.16 m
(d'=dsm(W/L)^0.61

Mean scour level = 189.29 m

Max scour depth = 16.72 m

(1.27*dsm)

As per provisions of IRC 78 minimum grip length required is 1/3 of the scour depth

Heighest Founding level in case of abutment

= 180.16 m

PROPOSED FOUNDING LEVEL

= 175.0 m

for abutment with proper protection works

Maximum scour level = bottom of well cap level

thus Max scour level = 194.5 m
Depth of foundation = 27.5 m

Bearing pressure calculation

Reference is made to Sub-soil investigation report for the project and here a calculation
is presented for bearing pressure calculation based on the report

Net safe bearing capacity as per the report= 40 t/m^2

Depth of soil upto founding level from = 19.50 m

Density of soil = 2 t/m^3

Overburden due to soil = 39.0 t/m^2

Safe bearing pressure at founding Level

Normal case = 79 t/m2
Seismic Case = 99 t/m2

DESIGN OF ABUTMENT CAP

The abutment cap has been designed as per Clause 716.2.1 , IRC :78- 2000 .

The abutment cap shall be reinforced with a total minimum of 1% steel distributed equally at both faces
and in both directions assuming a cap thickness of 225 mm.

Length of abutment cap = 18.715 m

Width of abutment cap = 2.425 m

Depth of abutment cap assumed = 0.225 m

Reinforcement in the direction of length of abutment :-

Area of steel required (mm2) = 2728.125 mm2 on each face

Providing steel by distributing equally at top & bottom = 11 nos. 16 f

Area of steel provided (mm2) = 2212 mm2 not o.k

Reinforcement in the direction of width of abutment :-

Area of steel required (mm2)/m = 1125 mm2

Providing 2 legged stirrups,12 mm dia.

Spacing if stirrups required = 201.1 mm

Therefore, providing 12 f , 2 legged stirrups @ 200 c/c .

CALCULATION OF WIND FORCES (as per clause 212 of IRC:6-2000 )

Area of superstructure in elevation ((1.8+0.9)x(26.6/2) = 54.000 m2

say 60.000 m2
Avg. ht. above ground level = 10.050 m
From table -4 say 12.000 m
wind velocity (v) = 122.0 km/hr
wind pressure (p) = 97.4 Kg/m2

wind pressure (p) = 194.8 Kg/m2 (As per clause 212.2, wind pressure to
be doubled as the bridge is situated in area
shown hatched in fig.-6)
Equivalent wind velocity = 168.0 km/hr

Area of sub str. in elevation (2.95x(19.78-16.0)+2.4*2.266) = 46.172 m2

say 55.000 m2
Avg. ht. above ground level = 5.250 m
From table -4
wind velocity (v) = = 122.000 km/hr
(considered same as above on conservative side)
wind pressure (p) = = 97.400 Kg/m2

wind pressure (p) = 194.8 Kg/m2 (As per clause 212.2, wind pressure to
be doubled as the bridge is situated in area
shown hatched in fig.-6)

Case-(i) - as per clause 212.3, 212.4 , for loaded deck

on superstructure 0.1948 x 60.00 = 11.69 t

on substructure 0.1948 x 55.00 = 10.71 t
no live load shall be considered over deck when wind velocity exceeds 130KMPH at deck
level as per cl. 212.5
i,e of IRC:6- 0.30
2000 x 0.00 = 0.00
please hide t
Total = 22.40 t
Case-(ii) - as per clause 212.6 , minimum force for loaded deck
( @ 450 kg/linear meter)
i,e 0.45 x 20.00 = 9.00 t

Case-(iii) - as per clause 212.7, minimum force for unloaded deck

( @ 240 kg/m2)
i,e 0.24 x 20.00 = 4.80 t

from the above cases, case-(i) governs the design.

CALCULATION OF SEISMIC COEFFICIENT

As per claue 222.5 of IRC-6 2000

Horizontal seismic coefficient is given by Ah = (Z/2)*(Sa/g)/(R/I)

Where Z is the zone factor as given in table 5 to be taken as 0.24

as per zone IV
I is the importance factor to be taken as 1.5 for important bridges

R is to be taken as = 2.5

Sa/g is tobe taken as = 2.5

Therefore as per the formula above we have Ah = 0.18

Vertical seismic coefficient to be taken as = 0.09

halfof the horizontal seismic coefficient

DESIGN OF WELL CAP

Well cap has been designed as a plate supported at the boundary by steining and subjected to vertical loads &
moments through the substructure .The load is considered after 45 o dispersion through the depth of the slab, upon the
effective
50% of thedepth. Sincemoment
sagging the at the centre of well cap is considered at support to account for partial fixidity of the well
cap with the steining. Effect of moment is considered by considering an equivalent triangular distribution of load for
shear force Fo
