SURYA BHEDI

 Known as “Sun Piercing Breath” (Or “Right Nostril Piercing Breath”, “Pingala Nadi Piercing Breath”)
 This breath uses the pranav mudra
 This is an energizing breath
 This breath has almost the same technique as Chandra Bhedi, but the opposite contraindications and benefits

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

 Hyperactivity  Too much pitta (Pitta means “fire” in


 Heart blockages Ayurveda. This could mean hyper
 Diarrhea metabolism, a very aggressive
 Hypertension personality, a fever, etc.)

BENEFITS:

 Combats low blood pressure  Increases confidence


 Relieves constipation  Alleviates depression
 Combats arthritis  Reduces introversion
 Increases energy  Balances doshas
 Beneficial for asthma

PRECAUTIONS:

 Do not practice right after eating, as it interferes with digestive rhythms


 Do not practice before bed, because it is energizing

TECHNIQUE:

 Sit up straight in a comfortable pranayama position and close your eyes. Relax and draw your focus
inward
 Bring your right hand into Paranav Mudra. Bring your index and middle finger together and place them
on your forehead. Have your thumb out and ring finger and pinky out and touching each other
 Close your left nostril with your right ring finger and pinky
 Inhale through your right nostril
 Close your right nostril with your thumb
 Release your ring finger and pinky and exhale through your left nostril
 Close your left nostril again and release your thumb to inhale again through your right nostril
 Continue this pattern of inhaling through your right nostril and exhaling through your left
 Beginners may keep the left nostril closed and inhale and exhale solely through the right nostril if they
choose
 Practice this breath for about 5 minutes
