VITAMIN C

CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

1.1 BACKGROUND

Vitamins have a specific role in the body and can also provide health benefits. If the levels of this
compound are insufficient, the body can experience an illness. The body only needs a small amount of
vitamins, but if these needs are ignored, the metabolism in our body will be disrupted because its
function cannot be replaced by other compounds. This health disorder is known as avitaminosis. An
example is if we are deficient in vitamin A, then we will experience rabies. In addition, vitamin intake
should not be excessive because it can cause metabolic disorders in the body.

Therefore, vitamin needs in the body must be fulfilled in other words, no less and no more. In daily
activities the body really needs vitamins that are used as a regulator of metabolism in the body,
especially vitamin C (ascorbic acid). In this paper which will be discussed are vitamin C, or one of the
vitamins that are water soluble.

1.2 Problem Formulation

-What is the understanding of vitamin C?

-How is the process of metabolizing vitamin C in the body?

-What are the benefits of taking vitamin C?

-What are the sources of vitamin C?

CHAPTER II
Discussion

2.1 Definition of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a nutrient and vitamin that is soluble in water and important for life and for maintaining
health. This vitamin is also known by the chemical name of its main form, ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is a
class of antioxidants because it is very easily oxidized by heat, light, and metals, therefore the use of
vitamin C as an antioxidant is increasingly common. Oxidation will be inhibited if vit C is left in an acidic
state or at low temperatures. The adrenal gland contains vit C which is very high. Excess vitamin C is
produced through urine.

Vitamin C was successfully isolated for the first time in 1928 and in 1932 it was found that this vitamin is
an agent that can prevent canker sores. Albert Szent-Györgyi received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or
Medicine in 1937 for this discovery.

2.2 Process of Metabolism of Vitamin C in the Body

Vitamin C is easily absorbed actively and may also diffuse in the upper part of the small intestine and
enter the bloodstream via the portal vein. The average absorption is 90% for consumption between 20
and 120 mg a day. High consumption of up to 12 grams (as a pill) is only absorbed as 16%. Vitamin C is
then taken to all tissues. The highest concentration is in adrenal, pituitary and retinal tissues. The body
can store up to 1500 mg of vitamin C if consumption reaches 100 mg a day. This amount can prevent the
occurrence of scoring for three months. Signs of scaling will occur if the supply is 300 mg.

2.3 Benefits of Vitamin C

a) The Best Antioxidants

b) Reducing the Risk of Heart Disease

c) Healing the Flu Faster

d) Lowering Cholesterol Levels

e) Reducing Blood Pressure

f) Improve the Immune System

g) Wound Healing
h) Effective against allergies

I) Caring for the Skin

2.4 Sources of Vitamin C

a) Vegetables Containing Vitamin C

There are broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and red peppers.

b) Fruits Rich in Vitamin C

Many fruits with vitamin C include papaya, strawberries, oranges and kiwi. Which is usually better
known as oranges which contain vitamin C. Citrus fruits contain vitamin C 50 milligrams every 100 grams
of citrus fruit.

c) Animal Resources of Vitamin C

Not only on fruits and vegetables, even in animal food sources there is vitamin C. For chicken liver every
100 grams contains 33.8 milligrams of vitamin C.

CHAPTER III
COVER

3.1 Conclusions

The conclusions of this paper about vitamin C are the most labile and water-soluble vitamins that
function as antioxidants. The highest concentration of this vitamin is in adrenal, pituitary and retinal
tissues. Many sources of vitamin C are found in fruits such as oranges, strawberries etc. As a result, if
this vitamin deficiency is a disease of scales and if you consume excess vitamin C supplements will suffer
from kidney stone disease.

3.2 Suggestions

After reading this paper, readers are expected to maintain a balance in consuming vitamin C, not to lack
or excess. Basically vitamin C is a substance needed by the body. But because everyone has a different
portion of needs, everyone has to take care of his life. That way, vitamin C that should be beneficial does
not have a negative impact on health. Disease due to excess vitamin C is quite dangerous, consume it
with the right portion.
