Skin
 Divided into two parts:
o Epidermis
 stratified epithelium
 extremely thick on
the palms and soles
o Dermis
 Dense connective
tissue
 Blood vessels
 Lymphatic vessels
 Nerves
 Thinner on the
anterior surface
 Thinner in women
 Superficial fascia – connects the
dermis to the deep fascia or
bones
 Skin creases – folds found in the
skin over joints
o Thinner
o Skin is tethered to
underlying structures by
bands of fibrous tissue
 Appendages (derivatives) of the
skin are the ff:
o Nails (figure 1.5)
 Keratinized
 Root of the nail
 Nail folds
 Nail bed – surface
below (skin)
covered by the nail
o Hair follicles (Figure 1.4)
 Hair grows out of
follicles
 Follicles –
invaginations of the
epidermis into the
dermis
