Introduction
1. In this laboratory exercise students are given opportunity to use PSpice for Phasor
domain circuit analysis and frequency response analysis.

Finding Response Function in Phasor Form using PSpice

Practice Task
2. PSpice can be used to find the response function in a linear electrical circuit
comprising resistors, capacitors and inductors. Following example will illustrate the
procedure.

3. Drawing the Circuit in PSpice. Consider the above given circuit, it is clear that it
cannot be drawn in PSpice directly as the components values are in impedance form instead
of being in Farads and Henrys. Following procedure will guide you to solve this problem.

a. Choose suitable frequency say ω= 2000 radians/sec for the source. This will
require an inductor of 20mH, and a capacitor of 16.6667 µF.
requiring a resistor of 34.64 Ω and an inductor of
10mH. Further 2000 radians/seconds implies Now
the PSpice circuit can be created as shown below with the component values:

b. PSpice has two special components IPRINT and VPRINT1 for printed output of
current and the voltage respectively in phasor form. These can be found in
SPECIAL library.

c. After the creation of schematics, the simulation profile is created by selecting

Analysis Type as AC Sweep, AC Sweep Type as Linear. Start and End
Frequencies both same as 318.3099 and Total Points as 1. These selections
are shown at the following figure.

d. After you run the simution current values are found printed at the Output File
as follows:

This agrees with the theoretical values.

Task No. 1
4. After the completion of the practice task students will simulate the following circuits
and find out the mentioned voltages or currents in phasor form using PSpice.

a. Find the indicated phasor voltages and phasor currents. Make table of results.

b. Find and draw the Thevenin equivalent of the following circuit for terminals a
and b. [Hint: find Voc and Isc and the ratio of the two will give Zth]

Task No. 2
5. Use Mesh Analysis and find the three mesh currents theoretically and then compare
the answers with PSpice results. You can use MATLAB to find the solution of three mesh
equations. Write three mesh equations in terms of i1, i2, and i3 and then use MATLAB
function “solve(eq1, eq2, eq3, i1, i2, i3)”. Show MATLAB code in lab report.

Plotting Frequency Response of a Circuit using PSpice

Practice Task
6. For the following parallel RLC circuit plot the frequency response, determine
resonance frequency and the two critical frequencies. Compare with theoretical values.

7. Draw the above mentioned circuit in PSpice. Create a simulation profile [AC
Sweep/Noise plots the variable of the interest against the selected frequency range.]

8. From the frequency response plot you can easily find the resonance and the two critical
frequencies and bandwidth.

Submit Lab Report covering the details and the screen shots of the work done for all
three tasks.
