government becoming Parliamentary
Private Secretary for Ethnic Affairs in the latest
cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister
Jacinda Ardern on Thursday June 27.
Expressing delight on the announcement
Priyanca said, “I am honoured to be appointed
by the Prime Minister Rt Hon. Jacinda
Ardern, to serve our diverse communities as a
Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister
for Ethnic Communities.
“I have spent many years advocating for
legislative and policy change to address specific
challenges that disproportionately impact
our ethnic communities, and support their
aspirations. I look forward to the opportunity
to work more closely with Ministers to build
on this work.
“I want to acknowledge my colleague
and friend, Michael Wood, for his work as
Parliamentary Undersecretary to the Minister
for Ethnic Communities.
“Over the last 20 months, Michael has made
a substantial and lasting contribution to the
strengthening of relationships between the
government and many ethnic communities. His

End of Life Choice Bill passes second

o our MPs know best? Or even they are
expected to know best?
At the very least, this is what that
comes out from some anecdotes shared by
many of our frontbencher MPs, from both sides
of the Parliament, on why they voted in favour
of End of Life Choice Bill.
ACT Party leader David Seymour’s End of
Life Choice Bill has on Wednesday, June 26,
passed its second reading in Parliament.
Taking it a step closer to where New Zealand
could embrace a law that could legalise
voluntary euthanasia or assisted dying.
The Bill was voted with 70 MPs in favour
and 50 MPs in opposition.
At least six more MPs from the last time had
changed their minds in favour of the Bill from
last time when had voted against it.
Surprisingly though, their change of mind
was based less on the views of the public and
the communities that they are supposed to
represent in the Parliament, and more on their
personal epiphany.
The vote on the Bill, although a conscience
vote (that allows an MP to vote on the basis of
their conscience without following Party lines),
does not, or should not, if it already does, give
an absolute freedom to not reflect the views
of the public that these MPs are supposed to
represent in the Parliament.
Most notably, National Party’s fiery MP
and spokesperson for Housing, Judith Collins,
changed her voting preference from what she
voted last time, based on her tragic personal
experience of watching her father suffer during
his last days.
With due respect to her sentiments, and of
those of many of her fellow MPs such as Labour
Party’s Andrew Little and Willie Jackson who
shared publically the fact that their similar
personal experiences, were the most important
decisive factors behind their votes on the End
of Life Choice Bill.
It must be noted that this is no ordinary Bill.
This is a Bill that seeks to legislate on an
issue which is beyond the scope of a majority or
is of concern for a very microscopic minority.
Moreover, the Bill seeks to deal with an overly
complicated issue of empowering a doctor-
assisted death to a selected few eligible people,
mostly suffering from an irreversibly terminal
illness. In fact, only a very few countries of
Europe have legislated on the issue, on a Bill
which was far more comprehensive than what
is currently progressing in NZ’s Parliament.
Against, such a backdrop, the fact that Kiwi
parliamentarians are not only changing their
votes from a previous “No” to “Yes”, such as
Judith Collins, or are unabashedly sharing their
personal experiences as the foundation of their
yes-vote, such as Andrew Little, is problematic.
It certainly reflects that some of our Kiwi
parliamentarians are not giving the seriousness
or respect to one of the most controversial and
complex issues facing New Zealand, which it
richly deserves.
However, not all MPs are succumbing to
their personal experiences and instead of giving
preference to the view of the community that
they represent.
In fact, it seems, backbencher MPs, or those
not in government as Ministers, are showing

Notable among those, was Labour MP for

when the Bill passed its second reading.
Michael Wood told Parliament he had
decided to vote against the Bill after speaking
with those with disabilities. Michael said he
had doubts, but meeting one of his constituents
with an incurable disease helped him confirm
he would not be voting for the bill.
This is far more attuned to the spirit of
parliamentary democracy where MPs are
expected not to supersede, the views of
communities they represent by their personal
preferences.

first Multicultural Hub

hristchurch – the city that has endured
so much in the recent past – will get
New Zealand’s first multicultural hub,
after a bid to secure much elusive funding was
approved by the local council on Tuesday, June
25.
The council has agreed to put $3m toward a
multicultural centre for the city.
The hub envisages offering dedicated spaces
for education, community strengthening, social
and financial well-being capacity building, with
flexible office space for various agencies from
educational, public and civil sectors.
Hagley College wanted to build a $5m
multicultural centre on its site, of which school
trust was ready to put in $1m while seeking
the remaining funding from external sources
including the Council.
The college is soon starting its own $20.5
million worth of redevelopments and has been
advocating a simultaneous development of
the multicultural hub, to reduce the cost, and
therefore desperately seeking external funding,
with the close cooperation of like-minded
organisations.
While the demand for such a community
centre in the heart of Christchurch city has
existed for many years, it gained much traction
in the last three years when Hagley College
came up with a plan to establish a multicultural
hub at its site to celebrate diversity and to
embrace all ethnic communities.

Centre for the lack of funding that had affected
thousands in the community struggling to
settle and integrate,” Mr Tandon said pointing
guidance and training for settlement and
success in the NZ workplaces and corporate
environment.
The team of Migrant Careers Support Trust
include some successful local professionals,
including barrister and solicitor and co-founder
of Legal Associates law firm Ashima Singh,
Corporate Governance Professional from TMF
Group, Siddharth Sharma, Registered Financial
Adviser from Professional Financial Solutions,
Alpana Gupta, and Leena Pal, an experienced
Sales and Marketing professional from the
media industry.
“This trust is a mission, to share the
knowledge and experience of all the successful
migrant professionals, with the new and
upcoming professionals, to help them excel
in their field and we are working to grow our
team with experts from various fields, who can
contribute to this mission,” Garry Gupta adds.
Other goals of the Trust includes removing
barriers for ethnic migrants for access to better
employment opportunities, help improve the
economic wellbeing of migrants that has a
direct impact on labour force participation,
provide training to existing migrant workers
and professionals to excel in their fields etc.

with professionals from various fields to
make ethnic people aware of the various job
opportunities, career paths, education and
training and upskilling opportunities available
in New Zealand.

16 families

ixteen families will have a much-needed
new, warm and dry home in Henderson
after the opening of new state houses
today, Housing and Urban Development
Minister Phil Twyford said.
“There is a real demand for public housing
in the Henderson-Massey area. These 16 new
houses mean families of different sizes can
make Coburg Street their home; with these 11
two-bedroom, three three-bedroom and two
four-bedroom duplex-style houses.
“These homes, which overlook Murillo
Reserve, are located near key services, and
are close to a number of schools and public
transport links.
“This development is a great example of how
Housing NZ is taking homes that are no longer
fit for purpose, and redeveloping the sites to
make better use of the land. These 16 homes
have replaced four old houses.
“I’d like to acknowledge the students from
Henderson South School who named the new
road Aporo Tawhito Lane – “Old Apple Lane” –
in recognition of this area’s former horticulture
heritage. I’d also like to thank them for their
waiata and reading at this morning’s opening.
“Of the 16 families moving into these homes,
14 have come from the public housing waiting
list and two are existing Housing NZ tenants
who have transferred from other areas. I’d like
to wish them all the best for settling in to this

construction sites around Auckland. The
government and the community housing sector
are well on track to provide 1600 new public

ew Zealand will host its first
ever Sikh Games event that
was announced earlier last
weekend to be held in November-
December this year.
New Zealand Sikh Games
(NSG) that is a modelled replica of
Australian Sikh Games will feature
more than 500 athletes from different
parts of the country over two days,
November 30 and December
1, participating in over a dozen
sporting competitions and cultural
programmes.
NSG is an ambitious event
planned for a long time to bring one
big sporting and cultural event for
the Sikh community in New Zealand.
The launch event and unveiling of
the logo and website were done at
Pulman Park, Takanini, the same
place where the event will be held
later this year.
The launch event was attended by
over 300 members of the community,
representatives from different sports
and cultural clubs, representatives
from different Sikh temples etc.
“This is one of the biggest events
for the Sikh community in New
Zealand, and it is happening for
the first time,” Daljit Singh Sidhu,
Games Manager of NSG told The
Indian Weekender.
Athletes can register themselves
in different sports competitions
organised in this event such as
Football, Kabaddi in which both men
and women can participate, hockey,
golf, shooting, tug-of-war, basketball,
netball, sprint races, athletics, and
even Gatka and Dastar competitions.
Cultural events include Bhangra,
Gidda, singing, stand-up comedy and
other small fun activities.
“We appealed the community
through our event, social media and
word of mouth and in less than one
week – we have received a huge
number of applications- the response
is phenomenal,” Daljit Singh said.
“As expected, this overwhelming
spirit of participation shows the
enthusiasm of young sportsmen
and women and the appetite of
such massive scale events in the
community,” Daljit added.
The official launch event also saw
different sports categories assigned
with conveners who will take charge
of assigned game’s registrations,
fixtures, laying the rules etc.
The event will see an opening
parade, Hakka performance by a
local group, band, and other cultural
performances.
“The opening parade will be like
that of Nagar Kirtan that is hosted by
Sikh temples, but bigger and more
grand,” Daljit added.
The event also aims to provide a
platform for young Sikh boys and
girls who will be able to showcase
their talents, either in sports or
cultural activities.
“We encourage the children of
our community to participate in this
mega event- this will give them the
idea of participation and the sense
of competition on such a massive
national scale of the event,” Daljit
added.

Over $10m memorial proposed for ChCh
mosque attack victims and response

he umbrella body of the
Muslim community in
New Zealand FIANZ has
proposed a memorial to honour
the victims of the March 15
Christchurch Mosque attack and
the response received by the New
Zealanders.
The concept plan for the
memorial is designed on Maori
Pikorua figure-of-eight that means
‘coming together of people’ that
will have a conference centre, a
playground, and a large ornamental
water feature.
The idea behind the memorial
to be constructed is to capture the
legacy of how the New Zealanders
responded and came as one to
support the Muslim community
after the vicious mosque attack on
March 15.
President of FIANZ, Dr Mustafa Farouk
has said that the memorial will be made in two
parts, one memorializes the 51 souls killed
and the second will be a celebration of New
Zealand’s response to the attack.
“It would celebrate how New Zealanders,
regardless of faith, came together,” Dr Farouk
told Stuff.
The concept design is made by Apa Architects
in Rotorua who estimate the project cost to be
between $10m and 15m to build.
“This memorial could provide a space
where this idea would be celebrated and
discussed. It could be a place for conferences,
and somewhere, families can sit down and
contemplate.”
Dr Farouk adds that the mayor of Christchurch
Lianne Dalziel has not yet seen the plans but
has supported the idea of a memorial to the way
New Zealanders responded to the attacks.
“There have been a number of other
proposals, not all of which are in the public
arena. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to
form any views until the community has had
an opportunity to be engaged,” Mayor Lianne
Dalziel's office told The Indian Weekender.
Mayor Dalziel also plans to meet Dr Farouk
from FIANZ soon and said it was time to start

and the council,” Dr Farouk added.
“This is not an idea that came out
of consultation with the [bereaved]
families. It is something we wanted to
do quickly so we could gauge interest.
We wanted to engage people from outside
Christchurch first to see if it could fly before
we worked out the nitty gritty,” Dr Farouk told
Stuff.

August this year, Stuff reported.
The first range of Dreamery products
will go on retail shelves in cities like
Bangalore, Mumbai, Surat, Pune,
Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.
After the initial launch, the Forterra-
Future Group JV will focus on building
a strong consumer base with its
strategic expansion throughout India.
The company plans to launch a new
product every quarter under the brand.

he Government is currently
proposing to reform
vocational education in
New Zealand, but up until recently
we weren’t sure exactly how it was
going to do this.
That’s changed. Information
released to us shows the
Government’s reforms will be wider
than first thought and will strip
power from regional New Zealand
and hand all of it to Wellington
bureaucrats.
 These tertiary reforms will
destroy regional education and
apprenticeships
 The reforms will mean regional
polytechnics will be renamed as
subsidiaries of a newly formed
statutory entity called New Zealand
Institute of Skills and Technology
(NZIST). After two years those
polytechs will be amalgamated.
 The polytechs will be controlled
by a head office. They will
have their individual cash and
community legacy assets ring
fenced to a regional level but
successful individual polytechnics
will lose control of the hard fought
reserves they have built up.
 Head office will decide how the
regions cash is spent and all other
ahead with ideology over what is
best for students and regional New
Zealand. It is likely enrolments will
fall over the two year transition
period, and perhaps beyond that.
 There will no longer be out
of region provisions, which have
shown to be a critical way of
recruiting learners to the regions
and attracting international students
to New Zealand.
 Not only that, more than
a thousand jobs all over New
Zealand will be lost just from the
industry training sector. Even Mr
Hipkins has confirmed there will be
‘substantial job losses’.
 This is coming from a
Government that claims to be
committed to the regions. But
these reforms are destroying
polytechs that are integral to their
communities. The Government can
talk the talk, but it’s certainly not
walking the walk.
 Industry Training Organisations
(ITOs), which represent
businesses and their needs will be
disestablished.
 At the moment the industry
organises placements for apprentices
because they understand the needs
are best placed to assess and deliver
for their region. They are training
the skilled and semi-skilled as
apprentices, helping them grow,
succeed and gain meaningful
employment.
 They certainly don’t need to be
told what to do by a Government
that thinks it knows best, intent on
removing this knowledge from our
region. The reforms are punishing
our regions and are punishing well
performing institutions.
 We know changes need to be
made and it is a challenge. But
Mr Hipkins should be addressing
the problems where they are and
leaving successful institutions
alone.
 National will return polytechnic
assets taken by Labour and give
them back to communities. We
will return polytechnic decision
making back to communities and
the regions. And we will return
apprentices to industry.
 We know how important
polytechs are to regional New
Zealand.
 National will fight these reforms
and we will fight for regional New
Zealand.

Kiwi travel trends revealed
R
esearch conducted by Singapore
Airlines[1] has delved into Kiwis’
travelling habits and found they love
being catered to in the air, tend to travel to be
with friends and families for major events like
holidays and weddings, and are more likely to
take advice from travel agents rather than social
influencers when researching and booking
holidays.
When it comes to the top three things Kiwis
love about flying – binge watching can’t be
beaten, with over half of those surveyed (56%)
agreeing that watching television shows and
movies is their favourite in-flight activity,
followed closely by the glamour of flying to
their destination (54%), and being attended to
while in the air (51%).
Singapore Airlines General Manager New
Zealand, Mr Kenny Teo, said the results
reinforced the fact that Kiwis are savvy
travellers who have travel in their DNA.
“It is not surprising that Kiwis enjoy being
able to relax when in the air, whether that
means being taken care of with a premium
level of service, or having the opportunity to
personalise their journey through the inflight
entertainment system or pre-selecting their
meals,” Mr Teo said.
“The results of the survey are encouraging
for Singapore Airlines as we pride ourselves on
delivering a consistently high level of service.
“Our inflight entertainment system
KrisWorld provides customers with over 1,000
entertainment options, while our Book the
Cook service is available for those travelling in
Premium Economy, Business, First and Suites
from Auckland and Wellington.
“Add to this, our international culinary panel
of chefs are continuing to develop menus with
ingredients that help promote wellbeing, we are
proudly committed to providing our passengers
with the most comfortable and enjoyable in-
flight experience possible.”

Eight of the world’s top 10 most
expensive cities are located in Asia
as a result of the region’s high costs
for consumer goods and a dynamic
housing market, while cities in
New Zealand continue to fall in the
ranking, according to Mercer’s 25th annual
2019 Cost of Living Survey.
Hong Kong tops the list as the world’s
costliest city for the second consecutive year
with the local housing market increasingly out
of reach for many. Other cities appearing in the
top 10 are Tokyo (2), Singapore (3), Seoul (4),
Zurich (5), Shanghai (6), Ashgabat (7), Beijing
(8), New York City (9), and Shenzhen (10).
Ashgabat in Turkmenistan saw the biggest
rise in rankings, jumping an astonishing 36
places from 43rd in 2018, as a result of the
family, answer work emails or check their social
media accounts. However, Kiwis admitted to
enjoying the ability to connect to the in-flight
WiFi, with only 40 per cent of those surveyed
cite ‘being uncontactable for several hours
while in the air’ as one of their favourite things
about flying.
A large majority of New Zealanders are also
making the most of travel information online,
with almost three quarters of those surveyed
(73%) using search engines. The large majority
(70%) look to friends and family for guidance,
and while one in two Kiwis (54%) stated that
they still use travel agents, the research found
that less than one fifth (17%) of those surveyed
agreed that they look to social influencers as a
main source of research when planning their
travels.
“What this research shows us, is that word
of mouth and recommendations from those we
trust, plays a significant role in determining
when, how and who you travel with,” Mr Teo
said.
“While there is a significant reliance upon
friends and family, travel agents still play an
integral part in not only influencing, but also
assisting Kiwis in booking their travel, which is
country’s shortage of currency and imported
goods driving up prices.
As with all cities in the Pacific, Auckland
(89) and Wellington (114) dropped eight and
13 places respectively. Australian cities fell
between 19 and 26 places with Sydney the
highest ranking Australian city at 50 (29 in
2018), followed by Melbourne at 79 place (58
in 2018). Noumea (29) was the highest ranking
Pacific city.

Kiwis (61%) book travel to attend important
family and friend events like holidays,
weddings or major birthdays, nearly half (46%)
of those surveyed agreed that they book travel
to explore different cities or cultures and 45 per
cent said that a good deal was their motivation
for booking a holiday.
“We know that Kiwis are increasingly
considering Asia and Europe for their holidays
and travelling to destinations like Hanoi, Phnom
Phen, Istanbul and Frankfurt more frequently,”
Mr Teo added.
“Our global network of more than 135
destinations across 37 countries and territories,
provides Kiwis with a choice that will meet
even the fussiest of travellers.”

The survey engaged over 700 New
Zealanders in October 2018, and data was
weighted to the age, gender and region
splits according to NZ Census statistics.
“Australian cities were heavily impacted
by the strengthening US dollar. New Zealand,
however, was affected to a lesser extent with
the local currency losing 6.5 per cent to the
US dollar over the past year, in comparison to
Australia’s nine per cent. New Zealand’s low
price movement and the rise of other main
cities in the ranking are also among the main
drivers,” Ms Costa said.
“While the actual cost of living in the Pacific
has not fallen, the exchange rate is a key
factor when calculating expatriate packages.
As a result, our major cities in both Australia
and New Zealand are becoming increasingly
attractive as locations for international
businesses to send expatriates. This is great
news for our local workforce which will benefit
from a richer, more diversified talent pool.
“On the other hand, currency fluctuations
mean it has become more expensive for
Australian and New Zealand-based businesses
to send employees to many major international
markets,” she said.
This year’s ranking includes 209 cities across
five continents and measures the comparative
cost of more than 200 items in each location,
including housing, transportation, food,
clothing, household goods, and entertainment.

sets new low
for low rate
credit cards
I
n a move that will shake up the New
Zealand credit card market, Kiwibank
today announced it will reduce the
interest rates on its range of low rate credit
cards.
For the first time, its lowest credit card rate
is dipping below 10% and is likely to set a
new benchmark low in the market.
The Low Rate card will sit at just 9.95%
p.a. for purchases and cash advances and the
annual fee has also been reduced to $30 p.a.
from $48 p.a.
“This is the first time in many years
that there’s been a significant change to
credit card interest rates,” Kiwibank Chief
Marketing Officer Mark Wilkshire said.
The last major change was when Kiwibank
introduced the first low rate product into the
market in 2002.
“With interest rates at an all-time low,
reducing rates on our low rate cards is the
right thing to do. This will help many of our
customers, and it’s one of the many ways
in which we’re committed to helping make
Kiwis better off” said Mr Wilkshire.
The reduced rates apply to Kiwibank’s
range of low rate credit cards from July
2019, for existing customers as well as new
customers.
For customers who already have a low
rate credit card, any interest charged on
statements issued from July onwards will be
applied at these new interest rates.
Kiwibank also announced today that it’s
entering into a new, exclusive partnership
with Visa to provide both its credit and
debit cards.
“We believe that teaming up with Visa will
allow us to deliver better innovation to Kiwis
in the future” Mr Wilkshire said.
Customers can apply for a Visa credit card
from 1 July 2019.

Paramhansa Yogananda: Who laid yoga’s
foundation in West

W
hen India celebrates International
Yoga Day on June 21, the one man
all Indians must fondly remember
is Paramhansa Yogananda, who laid the
foundation of yoga in the West at a time when it
was nothing more than a bizarre word.
Yogananda - born Mukund Lal Ghosh in
Gorakhpur - was in a way India’s first de facto
NRI ambassador who made it a mission to
popularize yoga apart from other things from
the time he moved to the United States in 1920
at the urging of his guru.
There, slowly and steadily, to a bewildered
audience that slowly came to accept his
teachings in hundreds of thousands till the time
he passed away in 1952, Yogananda taught
Kriya Yoga, God and meditation.  yoga was all about. The book, now available in

With his ochre robes and long hair, his
mere appearance invited ridicule, torment and

Goldberg, author of “The Life and Times of
Yogananda”, he endured sneers, glares, name

I
t is now 25 years to one of the biggest hits
and an all-time classic, Hum Aapke Hain
Kaun. In those days, there were factors
due to which films had, what was called,
repeat value.
In Sholay, the special effects and stereophonic
sound as well as the film’s dialogue drew
repeat footfalls.
Deewaar because of Amitabh Bachchan’s
fiery performance, as well as the dialogue. In
Rajesh Khanna starrer, Dushman, one song,
Vaada tera vaada, was enough to get the
audience back again and again.
There have been many such examples. In
fact, this surging popularity of film’s dialogue
prompted the music company, Polydor India, to
start a new trend of releasing dialogue tracks
on cassettes and in the case of Sholay, which
had weak music, dialogue cassettes sold many
times more than the music album!
All this glory of repeat audience was lost to
piracy when the films were overnight copied
on pirated video cassettes and released into the
market on the very day of a film’s release.
There was also no stopping as the piracy
moved from video cassettes to cable networks
and fresh films were beamed right into the
households.
However, the Rajshris had the advantage of
an all-India distribution network as well as sub-
offices in distant parts.
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was inspired from
Rajshri Productions earlier small budget home
production, Nadiya Ke Paar 1982), a rural
love story.
Though the film went generally unnoticed in
the rest of the country, it was a major hit in parts
of UP, especially Eastern UP and Bihar. Hum
Aapke Hain Kaun was modernised to suit the
prevailing tastes.

The company made sure that each print of
the film was in the possession of a company
appointed security man and the print remained
in his possession when not being screened.
Also, by that time, the film praises had
reached a pinnacle and every film lover wanted
it involved coin-operated phone booths, long-
distance operators, telegrams and patient letter
writing, often begging for funds.
Much like what Adi Shankara did in India
centuries earlier, Yogananda toured the US,
going wherever he could: Miami, Seattle,
Oregon, Los Angeles, New York, Cleveland,
Colorado, Boston, Utah… He probably logged
more hours on trains, station platforms and
waiting rooms than perhaps any American.
But Yogananda persisted - and achieved his
goal.
What eventually brought him unprecedented
glory was his “Autobiography of a Yogi”,
a spiritual classic of the 20th century that
instantly became a best seller and brought far
greater attention in all parts of the world to what
over 20 languages, continues to attract readers
around the world, catapulting many on the

From 1920 to 1952, Yogananda visited India
only once, utilizing the opportunity to teach
Kriya Yoga to Mahatma Gandhi in Wardha. By
then, Yogananda was a well known figure in the
country of his birth.

that Yogananda was an extraordinary human
being, a spiritual prodigy, psychically gifted
with exceptional inner powers and a self-

other film seen so far.
The film ran through three-and-a-half hours
and contained as many as 14 songs! And, there
was no solid script, so to say, to hold either the
duration or the 14 songs.
If at all the film had a story to tell, it was
during the penultimate 40 minutes or so before
it came up with a happy ending sending out
a delighted and contented audience. (Most
wanted to see the film again!)
The mainstay of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun..!
was its music and the way it was used in
the film.
After all, it was not easy to find slots for 14
songs in a film and, then, to justify them.
Yet, the music set the tone for the film from
the very onset with the title song, Hum aapke
hain kaun. A slow but melodiously soothing
Angeles Times called him “the 20th century’s
first superstar guru”.
Once Yogananda attained VIP status, he was
welcomed to the White House by President
Calvin Coolidge (1923-29). He also met

banquet hosted by the Indian Association of
America in honour of India’s ambassador to the

In a short speech, Yogananda said:
“Somewhere between the two great civilizations
of efficient America and spiritual India lies the
number.
When it comes to the film fraternity, every
other producer seems to know better than the
one who made a film.
So, there was criticism for the length of the
film as well as the number of songs.
A verdict of flop was passed even before
the film could release! Going by various
suggestions, the producers went on to reduce
the length by one and a half songs from the 14
numbers.
The film belied all predictions and went on
to become a blockbuster like no other film so
far. The deleted songs were added back and that
did not deter the audience from coming again,
and again.
Music played a very vital role in all Rajshri
productions yet, surprisingly, they never
went after big named, established composers.
When Rajshri Productions founder, Tarachand
Barjatya, made his first film, Aarti in 1962,
he assigned music composing to Roshan. But,
thereafter, the production house signed budding
composer duo, Laxmikant Pyarelal, for their
next five films.
Starting with Dosti, the music for all five
films, Taqdeer, Jeevan Mrityu, Piya Ka Ghar
and Uphaar, was hit, whatever the fate of
the films.

As he came towards the end of his speech,
Yogananda became surprisingly emotional. His
close followers would later recall that he knew
he was about to pass away.
“I am proud that I was born in India,” he 17said,
and recited a poem that read in part:
“Mortal fires may raze all her

Yet to sleep on her ashes and dream in mortality,
O India, I will be there!”
As he finished reciting the poem, Yogananda
slid to the floor and died, a beatific smile on his
face. He had often said: “I do not wish to die
in bed, but with my boots on, speaking of God
and India.”

the hit music for director Sooraj Barjatya’s
debut directorial venture, Maine Pyar
Kiya (1989).
Now, that was a gutsy move since, till then,
Raam Laxman were known for composing
music for mainly Marathi films!
The result, the film boasted of a variety of
songs, from melody to fun to the foot tapping
kind. No song drove a viewer to a loo break (as
was the norm in those days with boring songs).
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was way different
from the kind of films being made around
the time.
During its 3.30 hour duration and 14 songs,
most of the film was about a family gathered to
prepare and celebrate a forthcoming wedding in
the family.
Mostly, the screen was kept full of characters
generally having fun, singing and dancing. The
story comes with a twist in the proceedings
only much later.
But, what still made the film tick was its very
Indian-ness, the values, traditions and spirit
of sacrifice for the family; feelings lying deep
down in all Indians, still.
Rajshri Productions, which also had its in-
house distribution network, Rajshri Pictures
Private Limited, always experimented with
their release strategy.
Though a high-end production, Hum Aapke
Hain Kaun was given a limited screen with
just a SINGLE screen to start with. As the film
kept on generating more footfalls, the screens
were increased.
The film went onto celebrate 25 to 100 week
run in almost all major cities.
At about Rs 31 crore real time box office
collection figures, it was the biggest hit of its
time (Not adjusted for inflation etc since the
take home of that time is what matters).
And, that was the era of lakh and a few films,
if at all, crossed the Rs one crore mark!
What is more, it inspired many big production
houses to take to similar film themes appealing
to universal audiences, as in family included.
No action, no negative characters as
in villains.

US hails India for stopping oil imports from Iran,
Venezuela
T he US on Wednesday hailed India for cutting off oil imports from
sanctions-hit Iran and desisting from buying petroleum products from
Venezuela and promised to do “everything” possible to ensure that the
energy-hungry country gets adequate crude.
Delivering a lecture here, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo welcomed
India’s “assertiveness” in international matters and pitched for a “new kind”
of Indo-US cooperation, leaving behind the “nagging misconceptions” and
“distrust” witnessed in the earlier era which “still lingers”.
Pompeo, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held talks with
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar earlier in the day, said the two sides
spoke about “new age of ambitions of our proud nations”.
He emphasized that the two countries should not “see each other from the
narrow bilateral lens” but look at the world as it is.
“We have the ability to forge a new kind of cooperation that won’t be good
only for us, for the region but for the entire world,” the Secretary of State said
in the lecture on ‘India-US policy’.
“There’s a nagging misconception. The distrust of earlier era still lingers.
But that is not true. Just look at what has already happened. You have made
hard choices to cut off oil imports from Iran and move away from purchasing
Venezuelan oil,” he said.
Sri Lanka to resume executions after 42-year hiatus
S ri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena announced on Wednesday that
he had approved the execution of four people on death row after being
convicted for drug trafficking, ending a 42-year-long moratorium on the
application of the death penalty in the country.
“I have already signed death penalty for four (convicts). It will be
implemented soon and we have already decided the date as well,” Sirisena
was quoted as saying by Efe news, adding that all four were drug related
convicts. Sirisena has repeatedly said that he will go ahead with executions
of people convicted of crimes related to drugs as part of a hardening stance
in the drive against drug-trafficking on the island. 
In the beginning of the year, authorities began the extensive process of
recruiting an executioner, a position that had been lying vacant for many
years. Although more than 100 candidates applied for the position, authorities
are yet to appoint anyone for the post. 
The Commissioner of Prisons TMJW Thennakoon said he had not been
informed of the decision to carry out the executions.

and Japan-America-India (JAI) trilateral forums while attending the summit

inaugural meeting of JAI was held in Buenos Aires last year.
The Indian premier will hold some 10 bilateral meetings on the sidelines
of the G20 Summit, including one with Turkish President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan. Modi and Trump had agreed on the bilateral meeting when the
US president called the Indian leader last month to congratulate him on his

esearchers have found that
postmenopausal women with
breast cancer are at greater
risk of developing cardiovascular
disease.
"Heart disease appears more
commonly in women treated
for breast cancer because of the
toxicities of chemotherapy, radiation
therapy and use of aromatase
inhibitors, which lower estrogen,"
said JoAnn Pinkerton, Professor
at the University of Virginia. The
cardiovascular effects may occur
more than five years after radiation
exposure, with the risk persisting for
up to 30 years.
"Heart-healthy lifestyle
modifications will decrease both the
risk of recurrent breast cancer and
the risk of developing heart disease,"
Pinkerton said. The goal of the study
was to compare and evaluate risk
factors for cardiovascular disease
in postmenopausal women who
are survivors of breast cancer and
women without breast cancer.
For the findings, more than 90
postmenopausal breast cancer
survivors were compared with 192
postmenopausal women.
The researchers found that
postmenopausal women who are
survivors of breast cancer showed
a markedly stronger association
with metabolic syndrome, diabetes,
atherosclerosis, hypertriglyceridemia
and abdominal obesity, which are
major risk factors for cardiovascular
disease.
The risk of cardiovascular
mortality similarly increased to
match death rates from cancer itself.
"Women should schedule a
cardiology consultation when breast
cancer is diagnosed and continue
with ongoing follow-up after cancer
treatments are completed," she
added. The study was published in
the Menopause: The Journal of the
North American Menopause Society.

oor oral health is associated with
a 75 per cent increased risk of
hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC),
the most common form of liver cancer, a
study suggests.
Published in the United European
Gastroenterology Journal, the study
investigated the association between oral
health conditions and the risk of a number
of gastrointestinal cancers, including liver,
colon, rectum and pancreatic cancer.
Models were applied to estimate the
relationship between cancer risk and self-
reported oral health conditions, such as
painful or bleeding gums, mouth ulcers
and loose teeth.
"Poor oral health has been associated
with the risk of several chronic diseases,
such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes",
said the study lead author Haydee WT
Jordao from Queen's University Belfast.
According to the researchers, of the
469,628 participants from the UK, 4,069
developed gastrointestinal cancer during
the (average) six-year follow up. In 13 per
cent of these cases, patients reported poor
oral health.
Participants with poor oral health were
more likely to be younger, female, living
in deprived socio-economic areas and
consumed less than two portions of fruit
and vegetables per day.
The biological mechanisms by which
poor oral health may be more strongly
associated with liver cancer, rather than
other digestive cancers, is currently
uncertain. One explanation is the potential
role of the oral and gut microbiome in
disease development.
"The liver contributes to the elimination
of bacteria from the human body," Jordao
said.
"When the liver is affected by diseases,
such as hepatitis, cirrhosis or cancer, its
function will decline and bacteria will
survive for longer and therefore have the
potential to cause more harm," he added.

worked with 80 father-child pairs
when the children were about 3 years
old and conducted interviews and
observed father-child interaction in
the home, shooting video that was
evaluated off-site and assigned a
score indicating attachment security.
The researchers found that fathers
who choose to spend time with
their children on non-workdays are
developing a stronger relationship
with them.
However, fathers who spend lots
of time helping out with childcare-
related tasks on workdays are
developing the best relationships
with their children.
Men who engage in high levels of
play with their children on workdays
actually have a slightly less secure
attachment relationship with them,
said the study.
According to the researchers, in
early childhood, the most common
way to conceptualise the parent-
child relationship is the attachment
relationship.
Children form an emotional bond
with their caregivers, and it serves
a purpose by keeping them safe,
providing comfort and security, and
modelling how relationships should
work.
"Ultimately, fathers who engage
in a variety of parenting behaviours
and adjust their parenting to suit the
demands and circumstances of each
individual day are probably most
likely to develop secure relationships
with their children," said Brown.

lies in the sense of control about their
own work profiles.
"If you can decide how you are
going to do your job, rather than
having that imposed on you, it is
better for children," Spitzmueller
noted. While the low-income group
included people living in dire poverty,
she noted that their responses did not
differ markedly from those of the
wealthier group.
The study found that economic
resources are not as much of a buffer,
instead, feelings of autonomy in
the workplace reduced the health
problems for the children.

METHOD
• Pick through the lentils, discard any stones

• Heat butter in a large saucepan over medium
flame, add bay leaves, add washed and
chopped onions and sauté until transparent.
• Add washed and chopped garlic to the
onions and cook until fragrant.
• Add chopped tomatoes, chopped carrot,
black pepper, salt and vegetable stock and
mix well.
• Drain the lentils and add them to the soup
with 1 cup of water, mix well again.
• Cover and cook the lentils for a couple of
minutes, while stirring occasionally.
• Add more water if the soup is thick, bring it
to a boil, then reduce the flame down to low,
cover with the lid allow to simmer for 10-
15 minutes, occasionally stirring, until the
lentils are soft.
• When the lentils are done, allow them to
cool. Remove the bay leaves and blend it
into a purée with the stick blender.
• Serve with crushed black pepper and
croutons on top.
• TIP ; you can also do 1/2cup lentils with 2
carrots, 1cup chopped pumpkin or any other
vegetable that you like.
DHABA DAL
INGREDIENTS:
• 1/2cup - yellow moong dal ( Split yellow
lentil )
• 1/2cup - Masoor dal ( Split red lentil )
• 1/2cup - toor dal ( Split pigeon peas )
• 1/2tsp - turmeric powder
• 1tsp - salt
• 2tsp - ghee ( Clarified butter )
• 2cups - water
• FOR TEMPERING:
• 1tbsp - ghee
• 1tsp - cumin seeds
• 5-6 - curry leaves
• 4 - dry red chillies
• 1/4tsp - asafoetida
• 1 - onion, large
• 1/2tsp - ginger paste
• 1/2tsp - garlic paste
• 1 - tomato, large
• 1/2tsp - red chilli powder
• 1/2tsp - coriander powder
• 1/4tsp - Cumin powder
METHOD
• Pck through the lentils, discard any stones or
debris then rinse until the water runs clear.
Place the lentils in a bowl and cover with
water; soak them all together, covered for
10 - 15 minutes.
• In a medium heavy bottom pan, add lentils
along with its water, add another half cup of
water, turmeric powder, salt and ghee.
• Cover and cook for 15 - 18 minutes, stirring
occasionally to prevent sticking to the
bottom, add more water if required and cook
until the lentils are soft ( You can pressure
cook the lentils with four whistles ).
FOR TEMPERING; add ghee in a heavy
bottom pan on the medium flame.
• Add cumin seeds. Curry leaves, red chillies
and asafoetida, sauté for few seconds until
fragrant.
• Add washed and chopped onion, sauté until
the onions are brown in colour, add ginger
paste, stir add garlic paste, stir and then add
chopped tomato, sauté till the tomatoes are
soft.
• Add red chilli powder, coriander powder
and cumin powder, stir well
• Add tempering to the lentils, mix well.
• Lower the flame; cover and let simmer
for 2-3 minutes ( Add water to the lentils
if required, according to your own taste
consistency ).
• Serve dhaba dal with your favourite rice or
roti.

INGREDIENTS:

I’m always driven by conviction

W
hen Anupam Kher entered
Bollywood as an actor in the
1980s, the industry was ruled
by Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol and Sanjay
Dutt, among others. While most of them
established themselves as style icons,
Anupam was experiencing a hair fall
problem. He says his conviction made him
flaunt his bald look.
Recalling those days, Anupam said:
“When you have nothing, and everything
is going against you, you are left with your
conviction. That is my story. When I came
into the industry, I had struggled so much.
Around that time, my hair started falling
unevenly so that became another problem
but I am always driven by conviction.
Today, bald is sexy.”
“I remember my manager back then,
Ashok Panjabi, suggested me to go for
hair treatment and wear wigs. I was like,
no way, this is how I look. This is real to
me. If I come out in public wearing wigs,
the person next to me will understand that
my hair is false and I have to pretend that
I have so much hair…but why should I
pretend in real life? I am an actor,” shared
the actor, who made his debut in 1984 with
the film Saaransh.
Coming from Himachal Pradesh, the
alumnus of the National School Of Drama
had more interest in becoming an actor
than a hero in films.
“I thought if I can become an actor, I will
do more films for the longest time than a
so-called ‘hero’ or superstar because that
stardom comes with a shelf life. Now when
I look back, I think those actors have more

of films,” he quipped.

Supriya: Sachin Pilgaonkar Why Beyonce was ‘perfect

on and off screen in the Marathi film

industry. Married on December 21, 1984,
senior director-actor Sachin Pilgaonkar and
actor Supriya Pilgaonkar have celebrated three
decades of togetherness and love. Recalling the
first time he saw Supriya, Sachin says, “She was
performing on stage and I found her cute.”
The story after that is popular and everyone
knows how the power couple came into being.
Married for 34 years now, Sachin shares that
Supriya has contributed immensely in his life.
“She never did anything with an intention of
making it a professional or personal move. Her
aim was never about telling me or advising me
professionally. It was always steps and initiatives
she took on a personal level.”
Coming from a joint and simple Maharashtrian
family, he feels it was her upbringing,
culture and simplicity that has
continued to make his life
complete. “The biggest gift
that she has given me till date
is Shriya (daughter, actor).
I observed Supriya very
closely since the time she
conceived, every month she
would develop a new strength
in her. And, she has put all her
teachings and learnings into
our daughter. Of course, this also
means that she has two people to
quarrel with now (laughs).”
The Ashi Hi Aashiqui director adds that
Supriya has brought a balance in his life with her
spontaneity, transparency and bubbly nature.
“Though she is inhibited and can be a child
at times. When there is a calamity or problem, I
don’t know from where she gathers the strength
and maturity to deal with it. She stands by me
and balances my life. I am incomplete without
her.”
He adds that they do have their differences,
but the key is to not acknowledge it beyond the
event. They follow the mode of denial method
once an argument is over. They do not bring it
up no matter what. They only concentrate on the
positives in life.
So, is there anything he would like to change
about her? “Why should anyone change anything
about anyone. If I think of changing her, that

know we are with each other for keepsakes. It is
never a pretence or show. We are what we are in
real and reel. Our trust, honesty and belief for
each other makes us a power couple.
