CHAPTER # 6.

MECHANICAL HEATING AND COOLING:

1. MACHNICAL HEATING VS LOCAL SYSTEM:
1.1:MACHNICAL HEATING :

 Heat is supplied to a building or extracted from it by equipment

situated in a mechanical space (a furnace or boiler in a basement).
 Air or water is heated or cooled in this space and distributed to the
inhabited areas of the building by ductwork or piping to maintain
comfortable temperatures.
 They are generally quieter and more energy efficient and offer better
control of indoor air quality.
 They tend to last longer and are easier to service.

1.2:LOCAL SYSTEM:
2 FORCE AIR HEATING AND COOLING:
A furnance heats air with a gas flame,an oil flame or electrical
resistance coil. The heated air is circulated through the
inhabited space by a fan and a system of duckwork.
2.1 MAJOR COMPNENTS:
.Furnace
.Fuel storage
.Chimney
.Duck work
And if colling capability is included,an outdoor condensing
unit.some high efficency ,furnancemay be ventilated through
the wall and do not required a chimmny.
2.2 ADVANTADES:
2.3 DISADVANTAGES:
3 HYDRONIC (FORCED AND HOT WATER) HEATING:
3.1 DISCRIPTION:
3.2 TYPICAL APPLICATION:

3.3 ADVANTAGES
.Hydrolic heating is quick if properly installed and maintained.
.Its gives excillient distribution and its easily zoned for room by
room controlled zone pumps at the boiler.
The boiler for small building system are very compact some gas
are electric boilers are so samll they can be mounted on a wall.
3.4 DISADVANTAGE:
Cooling air filtration and humidification if desired ,must br
accompalished with independent system which raise the
overall system cast.
3.5 VARIATION:
.A multi fuel boiler is design to burn bothsoid fuel (cool and
wood)and a backup fuel (gas and oil) it is larger and more
expencive rhan a single fuel boiler.
.Radiant heating panels in celling or floors may a warmed with
hot water from a hydrolic boiler.
4 ACTIVE SOLAR SPACE HEATING:
4.1 DISCRIPTION:
4.2 TYPICAL APPLICATION:

4.3 ADVANTAGES:
.Solar heating has zero fuel cost and does pollutes the air.
4.4 DISADVANTAGES:
The initial cost of active solar heating system is to be heigh.
The collector surface become a very prominent.
A proper backup heating system is required to heat the
building.
Cooling must be done by separate system .
5 EVAPORATIVE COOLER:
5.1 DISCRIPTION:

5.2 TYPICAL APPLICATION

:
5.3 ADVANTAGES:
Cooling cot low.
5.4 DISADVANTAGES:
The humidity inside the building is difficult to control and may
be come excessive.
The system is inefficent in humid climate.
