This month will mark 150 years since 19th century
explorer John Wesley Powell set out with nine other
brave souls to map out what was then the unexplored
Colorado Plateau.
The three months it took to explore the Green and
Colorado rivers, along with the entire Grand Canyon,
brought many dangers to the group of men. They lost
supplies and almost drowned several times while trying
to navigate river rapids.
Disaster Falls and its nearby Disaster Island took one
of Powell’s freight boats as they tried to make their way
through what is now Dinosaur National Monument.
But those three months helped Coloradans secure
some of the nation’s most important natural treasures
— one of them being Gates of Lodore, selected by
Best of Moffat County voters as Best Tourist Spot and
Best Scenic Spot.
Powell’s expedition named the towering canyon rocks
that connect Dinosaur’s rivers to the heavens after an
English poem, “The Cataract of Lodore.”
Though the water is a bit cold, as summer

progresses, Gates of Lodore will continue to be
frequented by visitors as river levels are up this year. If
you visit, be sure to bring a camera to capture the same
awesome natural scenery met by John Wesley Powell a
century and a half ago.
As it is more than an hour’s drive from the popular
Utah side of Dinosaur National Monument, Gates of
Lodore are worth finding for those willing to make the
trip, according to online reviewers.
“Tempted to give one star just to make sure it stays
so quiet and peaceful,” said Kameron Harper in a five-
star Google review.
Fellow visitor Joshua Weickum had a shorter
description.
“Best-kept secret in Colorado,” he wrote.

 The establishment truly is a family restaurant, given
many of its employees share a surname.
“She has 10 kids and six of them work here,” part-
owner Cassandra Nunez said of her mother-in-law. “So
we’re all a big family.”
As far as specialty dishes go, Vallarta’s has plenty on
the menu.
“I would say we’re known for our crispy rellenos,”
Nunez said. “Our fajitas are a go. A lot of people like
our fajitas. Our molcajete dish is pretty popular.”
Molcajete consists of a bowl of a spicy-sweet red
tomatillo sauce complete with bell peppers, onions,
cheese, and fresh jalapeños garnished with fresh slices
of seasoned chicken, carne asada, carne adobada
(spicy pork), and bacon-wrapped shrimp.
The spicy dish is perfect for a family night or a date
out with your special someone when coupled with
margaritas.
Renovations maintained the original bar and liquor
license from the 1940s.
“We still have the original liquor license,” Nunez
said.
Nunez said they are delighted to be in Craig at
their new location since February. After many years
in Centennial Mall, the business took over the long-
vacant site near Craig’s western boundary, Signal Hill
Inn along Victory Way.
“If you’d seen this building before we touched
it, you’d think there’s no way we could remodel it,”
Nunez said. “But the owners of the building, they
worked with us and pushed us. Without them, I don’t
know if we could’ve done it.”

Craig has made her mark on the cosmetology industry
of Northwest Colorado.
Craig and her business, Allie Ooop Studio earned a
string of Best of Moffat County honors, including Best
Hair Stylist, Best Hair Salon, and Best Nail Salon.
“I can’t complain. I’m booked out for four to six
weeks at a time,” she said.
While crafting lovely locks and masterful manicures
are a service she’s provided for more than a decade,
she also repeated from last year’s Best of Moffat
County as the winner of Best Tanning, having pur-
chased Under the Sun Tanning and its equipment in
2017.
“Tanning has been phenomenal. It’s really taken
off,” she said.

That was also the same year Craig moved to her
current location at 470 Washington St., following 10
years on Yampa Avenue and a short stint on Victory
Way.
Once operating out of a shop that was 400 square
feet and now boasting 3,200, the space has afforded
her more room for the business that she has owned
for 13 years.
“Having more parking has been nice, because the
first two shops, that was always a problem,” she said.
Though her husband and daughter lend support
whenever needed, and she has an employee aiding
with tanning, much of the shop is run solo by Craig
herself.
With six to eight appointments daily on average,
oftentimes more, she is never bored, and the goal is
one word.
“Satisfaction,” Craig said. “I want to make sure
everyone gets what they asked for, and they’re happy
with themselves.”

During her tenure on the Moffat County School
District Board of Education, Elise Sullivan has taken
her role seriously and kept in mind the young people
she wants to help benefit.
Voted Best School Board Member as part of Best
of Moffat County, Sullivan said she was honored to be
selected.
Elected to the board in November 2017, Sullivan
said she first decided to run with children’s well-being
in mind.
“It was to make a difference in kids’ lives, so they
have better economic opportunities,” she said.
Since joining the board, Sullivan said she has
been most pleased to see the strides in science and

With 12 years teaching in Craig,
Lauren Padon has seen young students
who are now nearing the end of their
education with Moffat County School
District.
Though they may be taller and a
little more eloquent than when she first
taught them, she hopes her former
kindergartners will always remember
their time with her fondly.
Given her latest honor, that’s a safe
bet.
Padon was voted Best Elementary
School Teacher for her work at
Ridgeview Elementary School, though
for her the honor is more about the
children she guides toward bigger and
better things.
“They really become my own
kids throughout the year with the
relationships I form with them,” she
said.
The past school year has brought with
it challenges and a diverse group of
pupils, though by the time she has to
say goodbye, it’s always a little hard.
“I got very attached to them, but that
is every year,” she said. “Every year
brings new things and new kids and
new dynamics, but I just love being
at Ridgeview with the colleagues, the
families and everything.”
The particular grade level isn’t for
the faint of heart, she said. While
kindergartners are a little more mature
than where they were as preschoolers,

Middle School. In her first year with Craig Middle School, math instructor Amanda Hayes was voted Best Middle School Teacher.

Her time at CMS follows three years with Moffat
County Christian Academy.
“I had a lot of encouragement from another teacher
who had made the switch the year before last. Then
I got a call from CMS saying they needed someone,
so I decided to branch out. My last class at MCCA
is the one that really told me that I was on the right
path, doing what I was supposed to be doing. I had
great parents, great kids, amazing staff, they always
encouraged me.”
Focusing on a single subject and a single grade
level — eighth — was a welcome change after
covering multiple parts of the curriculum previously,
though math had been been her specialty in her
previous job, where she had also taught her own son.
She added she wasn’t even planning to embark on
a teaching career, originally working part-time as an
aide at MCCA before she “fell in love with it.”
The classroom size at CMS isn’t too big a transition,
rather the amount of students she sees throughout the
day instead of one group of kids.
Teaching pre-algebra and early geometry entails
finding a balance between bookwork and more
engaging ways to keep students’ interest in what can
be a dry topic, Hayes said.
“I try to engage them as much as I can, get them
out of their seats, move them around, just be silly
sometimes,” she said. “Kids make me laugh every
single day. I’m never bored.”
Bonding with students and their families was a
priority in her old position, she said, and the same is
true at CMS.
“I feel like it’s important to make student
connections, and I think I’m good at relating to them,”
Hayes said. “I genuinely love them, and I hope they
can tell that. That’s super-important.”
Even when the going gets tough, Hayes said she
works to keep her patience with kids and show them
how to conduct themselves as adults.
“I try to start every day with a clean slate. Doesn’t
matter what behavior issues we had yesterday, we’re
gonna start over. You have to forgive me, I have to
forgive you and have that mutual respect,” she said.
“Middle school is tough enough, so I hope I can make
it a little bit better for them.”

With two decades of his life invested in his

workplace, Lance Scranton has put in plenty of time at
Moffat County High School.
The recipient of Best High School Teacher, Scranton
has been part of MCHS since 1998, both as an English
teacher and a coach.
Having been voted by community members for the
distinction multiple times, Scranton said it remains a
big honor, though it’s one he doesn’t claim purely as
an individual.
“I’m just one person doing my job, but there’s a lot
of teachers here who are doing a great job every day
for our students,” he said.
Scranton has seen three of his four sons graduate
from Moffat County in the past five years, but he has
seen hundreds more Bulldogs both in an academic

Though it’s been at its current location for more than

four decades, with more than a century in Craig, The
Journey at First Baptist has both a lengthy past in the
area as well as likely many years to come.
The Journey was voted Best Church as part of
Best of Moffat County, a distinction that Pastor Len
Browning attributes to the church’s efforts to provide
as much as possible to the area.
“It’s encouraging to know the community voted for
us that way,” he said.
First Baptist has been in Craig since 1911, including
baptisms in the Yampa River. Following a temporary
location on Breeze Street and 50 years on School
Street, the establishment moved to its current site at
1150 W. Ninth St. in 1975.
A significant remodel in 2010 has aided the church
in bringing in sizable crowds not only for weekly
services but also other happenings.
“When we made that addition, we purposely did
it to have a larger sanctuary, so it’s kind of become
the place to have a funeral or wedding or other
community events,” Browning said.
Browning said the congregation sees anywhere
between 250 to 300 people on Sundays, though on a File Photo

“We’ve accepted the reality of who we are as a
group. Groups kind of have a dynamic to them,
and we’ve accepted that we’re a very open and
connecting group of people and our goal is to follow
the Bible and Jesus and not worry about the name
over the building or any stereotypes that might go
with it,” he said.
The official pastor for the church since 2006,
that bore the name The Journey that helped the
congregation start referring to the church as such in
2005.
“By the end of the summer, it just kind of caught
on,” he said.
Browning said he has had apprentices hailing
from Europe who have worked with area youth who
have told him they appreciate the diversity they see at
the church.
“There’s everything from little kids and young
families to a good amount of older folks and
everything in between,” he said.
Browning said he makes a point to work alongside
other churches in the community and the Ministerial
Alliance, as well as groups such as Bear River Young
Life, Yampa Valley Pregnancy and Family Center,

Matt Hammer is a man of many
talents.
You might catch a glimpse of
Hammer responding to fires with
Craig Fire/Rescue, regularly braving
destructive blazes with his fellow
firefighters.
Hammer is also an EMT and,
most recently, secured a spot in law
enforcement as a Moffat County
Sheriff’s Office deputy.
“I’m on the fire department, the
ambulance, and now I’m at the sheriff’s
department,” Hammer said. “I’m doing
all of them.”

“I’m in the jail right now until July,
then I have to get my post certification,
then I’ll be on the road after that,” he
said. “I love it. As soon as I did it, I
knew it’s what I should be doing.”
Hammer said he’s glad to have the
admiration and support of the Craig
and Moffat County communities who
voted him best first responder.
“I appreciate it,” Hammer said. “I
appreciate them believing in me and
giving me the opportunity to give 100%
serving them. It’s something I really
enjoy doing.”

potential as BEST COUNCIL MEMBER

Councilwoman Andrea Camp has a service-oriented
outlook on life in Craig.
“I definitely appreciate the opportunity to serve the
citizens of Craig,” Camp said.
Given the news she was voted best councilperson
by voters, Camp said she was honored to be chosen
out of six other dedicated public servants.
“Out of seven people, we’re great in different ways,
so it was great to be chosen,” she said.
Since being elected to the local government body
in 2017, Camp said she believes things are starting to
look up for the city of Craig.
Council’s new business grant program has taken
off as local small businesses took advantage of the
program and invested thousands in their buildings
with the city’s help.
Camp currently is a broker for Country Living Realty
and has worked in a variety of business roles in recent
years, including being a previous co-owner of a Best
of Moffat County-winning company, Great Divide
Cleaning Service.
She said there are also plans to start streaming their
meetings on the internet for those who can’t attend.
“We are working toward getting things live-
streamed at our meetings,” Camp said. “Making sure
that we’re getting that information to the public is
certainly our responsibility.”
But Camp also wants citizens to be involved.
“I think it’s so important to be informed about the
issues,” she said.
Camp sees Craig’s glass as half-full.
“It’s hard not to get caught up in the negative
because there are so many outside forces impacting
our community,” Camp said. “If we really just stop and
look around, we can realize how much good there is in
this community.”

Donald Broom is a straight-talking kinda guy.
He’s usually donning jeans and boots, cowboy
hat and a pressed button-down — one of Craig’s
quintessential cowboys and simultaneously Craig’s
newest and favorite Moffat County commissioner.
“When people meet me, they know me. I’m pretty
straight-forward. I’m a common sense guy,” Broom
said. “I’m a good listener. I listen to what people have
to say. If I didn’t know the answer, I found the answer
for them.”
Since taking office early this year, Broom sees his
role as a new commissioner as one of helping to bring
folks together.
“I think we all need to come together as a
community and as leaders — the city, county,
whatever,” Broom said. “We have to come together to
make this community work. It’s up to everybody what
Moffat County’s future is gonna be.”

“This is a great community. This is why I love living
here,” Broom said. “Nobody anywhere is gonna
tell me anything really negative about the people
of Moffat County. Moffat County has a lot of great
people and Moffat County has a lot of people with a
lot of knowledge.”
Broom sees change and hard decisions on the
horizon.
“People don’t like change,” Broom said.
“Unfortunately, here in Moffat County, we’re gonna
have to start thinking out of the box and start thinking
of some changes.”
That’s where community participation comes in, he
added.
“Be aware of what’s going on in your community,”
Broom said. “Get involved and ask questions.”
As Moffat County’s newest — and now favorite —
commissioner, Broom said he’s honored.
“It means a lot,” Broom said of voter support. “It
puts a look on when I was running for commission
and how I got into office. It’s good to know people in

In the 1950s, Lou Wyman was a
rancher with a knack for collecting
rarities. Now, the 86-year-old boasts
one of the finest collections of
Americana anyone might muster.
“When we started, we figured all we’d
do is have some musty ol’ stuff and
people would see it,” Wyman said. “It’s
evolved far beyond that since then.”
Wyman has been using his eye for
collectibles to fund his own museum
since 2005. Items he could buy cheap
or those that were donated often sit for
decades, seemingly forgotten until that
one buyer shows who must have it.
That cycle started with Wyman’s 1932
