Lesson 3 Learning Area: Maths: Statistics & Probability

Student’s prior knowledge:
 Students know and can use the language of chance/probability i.e. certain, likely,
impossible.
 Students can write data as a fraction
 Students can determine most and least likely by looking at data
Objectives: Students will be able to…
 Interpret and compare data
 Conduct a chance experiment using coins, recording data in a table
 Describe the occurence of an event using fractions and percentages.
Teacher Prior Preparation/Organisation:
 One silver coin per student
Provision for SER:
 Lucas
 Provide stretch for students who understand concept
 Can group weaker students with stronger students
Introduction:
1. Teacher recaps with students what they have learnt so far and what happened in the
prior lesson.
2. Warm up - count girls and boys in class
3. Ask students what they think the probability of me picking out a girl/boy would be.
4. What is the chance of them being a croc, eagle, shark, kangaroo, stingray.
5. Representing it in the 4 different ways.
Body
6. The chance of flipping a coin “what is the chance of flipping this coin and it landing
on heads?”
7. Introduce students to the game heads or tails. Students are to stand up. The teacher
has two coins. Students choose: one hand on their head and one on their hip [heads and
tails], two hands on their head [two heads], both hands on their hips [two tails].
8. Last student standing wins
9. Students work in partners to conduct a chance experiment. Students toss the coin 20
times and record heads or tails into the table on the worksheet. Students are to list all the
possible outcomes of tossing two coins.
10. Students record data into table
11. Stretch for students to record on a graph

13. As a whole class discuss the intention of this lesson
Questions to ask students:
 What are the outcomes of tossing two coins
 Discuss the ‘theoretical probability’ - equation is p(event) = # of times event
occurs/total number of outcomes
